Title: The Winchester 70-35, ammo and musings...
Post by: VaporTrail on April 01, 2020, 08:07:23 PM
I picked up Manny's Winchester 35 awhile back, so I've had a good amount of time to spend with her. She's a laser with JSBs, and is as smooth as drawn silk butter. Decent power at 140FPE. Hands down, she is the smoothest in my stable. I tried a whole assortment of ammo for her, at least 5 different type and weight slugs, and 4 different pellets. She's not a slug shooter, that's what I seemed to have determined. She loves JSBs the most, then the 84gr RM meplats and the Polymags.

I was going over some older threads here and I came across one of my posts about the 86gr HP EPP/UG slugs; those would be just about on point for the first two shots, and then the next couple would be fliers. Then the light bulb went off:

What if those slugs (which are shorter and therefore not as amicable with the faster twist rate of the barrel) don't like to be shot that fast? Original chrono string with the JSBs at a 210BAR fill are as follows:

866, 877, 884, 881 and 877.

The first two shots with the 86s were close to acceptable accuracy at 3/4 of an inch at 30. The next two were wild, and the 5th and 6th shot were close to the first 2 in accuracy. I refilled after the first mag to maintain consistent air pressure to determine accuracy, but looking back at this now set the idea off in my head.

Do these slugs prefer to be shot slower? Do they work better with the twist rate going at slower speeds? I also have some 75gr NSA slugs, which did not produce accuracy at all at the 200-210 fill. Perhaps these would also benefit from slower speeds?

With the coronavirus slowing down just about everything everywhere, it has also allowed my mind more time to think, which led to this.

Perhaps I am on the verge of a breakthrough with my finicky Korean lady?

What are your thoughts?

That link gave me a weird "something is broken" looking page. I typed in biglube, and looked around a little. Mostly molds?

That'll probably be the next stage for me. A round or cone nose and a HP EPP/UG in .357 and maybe the same in .25. If I had a bunch of expendable income, I'd also get the same in .22.

They do very well at 900fps muzzle velocity.  They don't like being pushed much harder, I think this is due to the BD's relatively fast 1:14 rate of twist.

Here are 3,  5 shot groups at 75 yards.  The center group is the best I've ever done with the BD.

Same velocity, shot into water jugs at 65 yards.

Thanks puff. I checked the sample on biglube, and there's really.only two that I'd like to try. I guess I could just repeat some entries?

As for hikal, those slugs look real nice, but unfortunately at the checkout I got a message saying that they couldn't calculate shipping to my destination. Which probably means that they won't ship out here.  :(

I'm so done with this shipping baloney.

Paul, you may want to look at what AAO has to offer. I would contact Jeremy to see if he will ship to your location.

Thanks for the link, Kris. It appears he only offers one type of ammo for .357, amd unfortunately, it's not the type I'm looking for.

That's ok though. Looks like I'll have to stick with Rick and Nielsen.
