A couple of weeks ago, my Mom had a terrible Pepe'-Le-Pew odor in her house. She called an exterminator that said she probably had a skunk that has taken up residence in the crawl space underneath her house. He set out some sticks with adhesive on them to gather evidence. Sure enough, he detected presence of a skunk. The service call was $149. He also stated he would set traps and the charge would be $95 per animal trapped and removed. I didn't want her to spend that kind of money but I SURELY didn't want to deal with trapping and removing a ticked off skunk.
So, he went about setting traps. Several days went by with nothing. While mowing her yard, I noticed some fresh digging around her foundation. She called the fellow and he came out and set his traps again. Next day, one trap was dragged several yards toward a wooded ditch area behind her house. No animal, but somethng tried to make off with the trap.
I went to the lake this weekend and I called Mom after returning. Seems the trapper was very successful over the weekend. Not one but TWO bandits were captured. And one was HUGE according to her. It totally filled up the large box trap he used. The next day a smaller bandit was trapped. I wish I had known they were bandits and not skunks. I'd have staked out the area and threw some choice vittles out for them. This would give my Benjis a good workout. But alas, I missed out.
Since they were bandits and not stinky jobs, there is a lot that can be done with them. Edible and the skin can be used. So, the fellow said he probably would not charge for the removal. I may install a dinger and a game camera under her house just to see if there's more to come. Might get my chance some day. And this will also give me a good excuse to get that game camera I've been wanting. :)
Happy Shooting!!!!

That's too bad you did not set up the Ding Donger before you hired the exterminator to see what you got. But he didn't charge for the coon removal so that's good. Around here $325 per animal is what they charge!! Where my brother lives very close to NYC, it's $500 per critter!
The skunk proably went too close to the crawl space to investigate or ran into one of the "resident" coons in your backyard and sprayed.
It could 've been a red fox trying to catch the skunk for dinner too and the skunk sprayed. On Friday my neighborhood smelled like skunk. My neighbor 3 houses down who is also a hunter, said that he smelled the skunk odor and turned the lights on. He saw a red fox running fast leaving his property in the back. His wife who was looking out the front living rook window, saw a skunk crossing the street leaving their property, the opposite way of the fox (which was in the back). So the fox most likely tried to attack the skunk. It's nice to know I still have red fox around the neighborhood too :)
