I logged on this morning to discover that the ads are taking up a huge amount of real estate, even with my ad blocker on? I have to scroll down a full page to get to the content. I notice that the same stack of ads appears twice, and under the second stack is the word "test".
I checked other sites, and my ad blocker works fine on them. What happened? Was the "test" successful?
-
Mine still works as intended but then again.. I use Linux, Firefox and Badger.

I mostly use my IPhone. The ads really weren’t to big a deal. But this morning... Wow! I wonder if using the black motif has anything to do with it? I say that because at the top of the page I still see the old logo, not the new one people have been talking about...
-
Bam! And just like that; the double stack of ads has been removed. Thank you, whoever did that...
-
I noticed the small scrolling ads (almost looks like place holders) moved from the bottom of the page to just above the content area on my laptop, but at least they are not huge and force me to scroll 2 screens down to read anything...
-
And... They’re back. Without the word “test” underneath the bottom stack. There’s really no need to have the same block of ads stacked on top of each other...

Personally I think ads should be only at the top.. I turned off the ad blockers and the 3 times, one ad was displayed throughout the page. To me more than once is too desperate, and annoying. Plus its probably whats causing issues with the forum layout, and orientation of the page for some. It probably be wiser to ditch the scrolling banner, and just put solid smaller banners. Then wouldn't have to worry about JAVA or shockwave, or whatever program that will view them.
-
Ads can be displayed both tastefully, and effectively; without assaulting ones eyeballs. The method demonstrated in the photo I provided meets neither of those qualities.
-
Since I brought up the scrolling banner, I get the stop button, placed in an in convenience spot even with ad blocker on. It blocks some text.

if you have a script blocker disallow the code.jquery.com script and the ads will become stationary

On the HOME PC which uses Firefox and an Ad blocker ... Yet to see or deal with a single AD you folks are seeing .. I like that !!
-
Same here Scott.
-
Mostly a mobile phone user here...
-
I log on with my cell phone while at work an away from my desk. I get an ad at the top of the page and one at the bottom. Not annoying at all. I use Firefox alone on my phone.
-
When I logged on this morning, from my desktop, it was apparent something had changed with the website overnight. Once again the scrolling ads are back just below the advertising banner. For some reason I thought the scrolling ads would remain placed on the lower part of all pages?

So are you saying these aren't showing on your screen? (These are "ads" and comtain hyperlinks) Not sure how as I run FF with no-script and only allow GTA.org script to run

Win 10, Firefox and Adblock Plus here and I don't see any of them.
-
Since the point of the ads is to generate revenue for the GTA and to send sponsors some desired customers. If you block those ads then sponsors don’t get a view or click, and the GTA gets no revenue, perhaps folks might consider making a donation. ;D
Taint nuffin free in this world.

None of it ... i have threw the years contributed financially and certainly content wise. I have no guilt not seeing the adds, know who most everyone is within the industry. Like spam phones calls, don't call me I'll call you when needing something.
-
Sponsors pay for the ad space whether some members choose to block or not. These ads do not sway who I choose to do business with. Good deals are generally posted in the Bargain Gate. These sponsors have no insight as to who is blocking ads... unless you've admitted it here, like I have.
The forum will also continue to have raffles and fun shoots to raise funds along with selling hats and shirts.
If you read in some of the other thread addressing such topic you'll note that it's been said that multiple PP donations also created tax issues.
If selling space for a few ads and banners keeps the lights on, so be it. I'm pretty sure the folks who pay for this space are well aware of ad blockers.

Ladies and gentlemen. It's been decided by the new ownership that this is the design of the new GTA. It is what it is. Can we please get back to what we all came here for? Airguns.
-
I don't mind the ads. They are all talking about my hobby, and now have a direct link without leaving the GTA to go find them.
My .02 is that I liked the scrolling banner better at the bottom. At least there is a stop button I can hit to stop the scrolling, but it has to be hit with each page refresh. I think the scrolling speed should be half of what it is now. That would be easier on the eyes and would give the vendors more exposure time when up front.

Lord knows I agree Bill... But why twice?

That was kinda what I was wondering...

Vista!!?? Now that's amazing...I have some VMs that are still Vista for "testing" but I'm shocked someone is still using it. Just make sure you don't do anything on that PC you care about....but otherwise rock on!
-
I don't mind the ads, but Firefox with NoScript will stop them as well. Back to Airguns...

I use Linux Mint 19.3, Firefox, Addblocker Ultimate and privacy badger. It's a desktop that I recently had to put a new hard drive in because the old one died. Honestly I really should buy me a more updated mother board and case but heck this one works so darned good the way that it is I ain't going to mess with it.
-
Exactly the same software here Wayne except I don't use Ad Blocker and I see zero ads. Just 19.3, Foxfire and Badger. I use the Silver theme and get the old logo with the flags.

Same here using Linux Mint, Firefox and uBlock Origin 1.24.4.

That’s the logo I see also. I use the black theme. Maybe that has something to do with it. I really don’t mind seeing ads generally speaking. I don’t even see the scrolling ad some reference. For me, it’s the weird double column of the same ads that throws me off. Why twice back to back? It’s just weird. Because being stacked one atop the other... If you see one; you see the other. So there’s really no additional exposure for that advertiser. It would make more sense from an advertising perspective, that if you wanted to show those vendors twice... put one stack at the top of the page, and the other at the bottom. Then you’d see their ad in two separate locations. It’s just weird...

Ever since I've been using Linux Mint 17 I have had very few things go wrong that were due to software. The last MS operating system that I used on the internet was Windows XP Pro. The only reason I quit using it was due to the fact that MS didn't support it anymore. I have that system on this new hard drive also but I unplug the ethernet cable when I boot into it.

Well don't you think, that maybe some of the users are getting annoyed. That to visit here, they have to install programs, to make their visit much more better? Be it desktop/laptop/mobile. Because sure I'm using ad blocker, It was working 100%. But now its barely working and the ads are some how getting thru. Now every time I open a new post I gotta deal with something I find annoying. I cannot even change the theme, because it makes it worst.
I shouldn't have to click the stop button every time I look at a new post. To get rid of that banner.
So as users of the site, we got a say at what we don't like, and it shouldn't have to be. If you don't like it, leave. Give us the options of not dealing with it, without programs.

Quite frankly Robert, I see two small ads at the top of the page in your attachment. Do they honestly annoy you that badly? If so, your internet experience, as a whole, must be an adventure in frustration.

Going over a couple things with Travis yesterday; we determined that the issue with the large, long column of double stacked ads that were the basis of this OP; were caused by using the non standard theme. In my case, the “ambassador” theme. I switched my theme over to standard, and everything changed. He said he’ll have his tech guys look into the theme issue. This may help explain different users having wildly different ad presentations.
-
I've never use anything but the standard theme myself because it always looked fine to me ???

I find the contrast offered by the ambassador theme to be easier on my eyes. I mostly use mobile devices to access the site, so that may have something to do with it.
-
Wayne.. give the Sinful Silver theme a look. I think you'll like it.
-
I used the Black theme before, I found that the black back ground hid some characters.
-
I was using "Ambassador", but switched th "Curve" recently for my tablet.
like it's "Look and Feel".
I just checked "Silver" hard to see in the sun. :-[
went back to "Default and saw why everyone was grumbling about the new GTA logo.
back to Curve ;D

Is when a ad blocker was suppose to block it, and it still scrolls. If I switch themes, I get this void..... With many of the other themes. If they don't want criticism and feedback, don't change it. Also being international, most of the ads do not apply to me.
I understand you are a die hard user, but take the feedback.. Make the site better, since if desktop is buggy. Im sure dial up user, or mobile users are being frustrated.

Travis is working on integrating the alternate themes with the updates we see in standard view. It was only pinpointed yesterday, that the alternate themes were the crux of the problem. It may take a bit for the tech guys to address the matter.

Please don't mess with Simply Silver.... I like it just fine.... lol

Here's what I get :D

Really Wayne? With Silver?
This is what I get....

It has been a good computer, just the power supply changed once. It still works great but I have a new one coming Wednesday so Windows 10 should be interesting.
-
I loath Win 10.
-
I heard some people hate W10, I am not picky, just need something that will download the latest programs for my rc stuff that Vista won't.
-
Maybe give Linux a try? I find it more stable than anything I've ever used from Microsoft.

Here's what I get :D
Here's what I get using Linux Mint19..........
