Title: Incredible deal; Tasco 2.5-10x42 mildot for $27.99!
Post by: Jeff Marshall on February 03, 2020, 03:38:02 AM
These scopes have a long history of holding up well to spring piston gun recoil:

Amazon also has Tasco 6-24x42 mildot scopes for $29.99.

Well, you guys sold me.

I could use a better one for one of my Trail NP2. The price on this was right, so I went ahead and ordered one.

I had bought a few of these at $30 and am very impressed.  Just now placed an order for 2 more at the $27.99 -  Amazon showed 2 in stock both before & after I placed the order for these 2!

Sneaky, created urgency.  LOL I just bought one, not because of any urgency but I'm not sure why, I have 16 unmounted scopes already.  ::)

I have some scope I don't care for mounted though so I need to get busy sorting and swapping things around. I guess it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it?  :-\

Received my $27.99 Tasco today. It was worth a roll of the dice but unfortunately, I got snake eyes. The Parallax adjustment ring is horribly stiff to adjust and almost makes a grinding noise when it is turned. Sending it back for a refund tomorrow...

well I have two of the 2x10-42 and really like them got one of them a couple years ago for ~50$ and thought it was a decent deal then... the other I got on sale... one is on My .22 AT44 L  have had zero problems and is about perfect for  the 50-75 yards I generally shoot to... the other is on my .22 Buc... also zero probs... at this price it is a very hard deal to beat...IMO... they are still 75$ at optics planet...

My son saw me looking at the 6x24 and decided to order one for an early dads day present... do not think I have ever seen it below 60$...will know soon if it is as good as the 2x10...

Mine was very stiff when I took it out of the package, right after it arrived.  No grinding though.   Once it warmed up, it was better.   Not as easy as some of the others with a obj parallax, but workable.  Outside of chrony work, this will be for 35-60 yd use, so won't be making allot of adjusting.   If you do plan on allot of long range shooting and using it for ranging, better to go to the side parallax, and one you get get a side wheel.

It came in a 19.6oz, so not a heavy scope.  It will do the job for the $28 spent.

Mine came last night, so I've only had a chance to test it out in my 15ft basement range.
So far, I'm very impressed for this very low price range. Looks and feel well built. Turrets are not as tight as I prefer, but is very smooth and has a positive confirmation clicks. It's also nice that you can rezero the turret dials. Glass was sharp and clear down to 15ft. We'll see how it fares outside, at up to 60yd distances. AO is tight, but solid and smooth, with no grinding noises. Mil-dot reticle is sharp, well definited, and just the thickness I prefer.
The scope is mounted on my .22 Trail NP2, and initial sighting-in was right on the money. This weekend, it'll be truly sighted in, at 25yd.
The scope will arrive to you with it's durability tested, since there was no protective foam or anything for impact protection. The scope was just wrapped in a thin sheet of foam to protect against cosmetic abrasion. Even the box itself is just very thin cardboard, and not even high density corrugated cardboard. The scope package was packed inside an Amazon box, with essentially no useful protection either. So, I figured if, by the time it gets to you, and it's still functioning properly, it must be fairly durable.

Yea, I felt the scope sliding back and forth before opening.  It was unusual not to have foam in the two ends of the scope box, especially seeing how there is room in the box.  The amazon box just had those air pillows which do very little.

Kirby, I don't have any of the 6-24 versions, but can tell you what probably is to be expected.

When cranked up to the higher powers, it will be kind of dark and eye placement will have to be just right to get a full field.

But under most circumstances the higher powers won't be necessary or even desirable.

Got it today and yep it looks like you about called it which is about what I expected with the small objective... but I am pretty satisfied at 16x... which is probably about what I will use when going for 100+ yards later this year(AT44 L BBT 30g .22 testing)...

Have a BSA Catseye 4x16-44 side AO on my Buccaneer .177 that does really well even at 16x... so am hoping for similar from the Tasco...

well worth $28.....everything works good.
only thing i can see that shows the price is sight picture is dark,
not good for low-light hunting conditions.

will be a great 50yrd plinker..... ;)

Just finished a shooting session in the dark. Just a simple flashlight on a rubber mulch filled 5gal bucket. Benji Trail with the Tasco is now sighted in at 30yd.
I had no problem seeing my black target with an orange bullseye, under very low light condition, right until I needed to turn on the flashlight.
So far, this scope is a winner, and I'm really liking it!

........especially for $30!

Those scopes are fantastic- it has the moniker "Varmint".  I'd been using mine on my Leshiy and it fits quite well.  It also lived on my MRodAir Varmint, my Maximus, and my PP700 (which was a little ridiculous but DANG what a great scope for the monies!)

Finally got to try the Tasco in full daylight today. Way better image quality than what you'd figured you'd get for sub $30. No problem seeing the details of my 1.5" steel target, set 60yd out within the shadows of the wild brushes.
No, I didn't hit this target. Just too far for my capabilities with a piston gun. Also, with 20mph sustained winds, I didn't even bothered. However, I did connect with the 3"  steel target at 55yd.
Very happy with this scope! Will now just have to wait and see if it'll withstand the recoil of the NP2.

I bought 3 of the 6-24x scopes.  I opened one and check how close they focus at 24x.  13 yards is sharp and in focus.  I'm glad because that's the distnace in my basement range where I do pellet testing.

Thanks for the heads up on the deal Jmars!

Question: my current rings on my Crosman NP arent high enough to fit the 42mm so....

Do you recommend a one peice, 2-piece, or dovetail to picatinny conversion for my current rings?  All are around $10-12 bucks on Amazon and all account for a stop pin.  My brain is on Sunday mode and incapable of analyzing things today.

Thanks!

I personally like the versatility of a 2 piece. I would also go picatinny only, instead of dovetail to picatinny.
BTW, you'll want medium height rings.

I don't know my excuse for getting 1 either TJ  :)  I have 3 or 4 new scopes in the box (but 2 of them are 30mm and heavy), I have 2 older TASCO's, have no gun that needs a scope, and no I didn't need another one.  I failed all the criteria  :)  I have no clue why I got it  ;D  Oh wait, could it be that thing they call addiction?  ;D ;D

Which one did you get?  I ordered the smaller 10x.  Should be here tomorrow.

Is it me or is Amazon getting slow at shipping?  Tomorrow will be 8 days, and it's not the Holidays.. I guess with almost $300 Billion in sales they are busy all the time.  Their sales revenue went up 21% last year(!).  It used to take an avg. of 5 days, 6 days max to my door when they shipped directly from Amazon (like the Tasco scopes), but this time they didn't actually ship it for 3 business days.  They used to ship the next day, 2nd at the latest.  Not sure if that's going to be the norm now.

I bought the Tasco 2.5-10X42 and it is easily worth 4X times the $30 price point. Its a solid scope on par with my UTGs. I plan on getting the 6-24 just as soon as I can sneak it pass my wife..... ;D

Hello Harry,

I got the 2.5-10x42, and YES, it is total addiction! Didn't need it, have too many sitting in boxes, but WTH ... why not, the price was great, and the scope is actually very nice.

Also mine took longer (about 5 days) from Amazon, as did another order of my wife's that took a week (with Prime), so YES Amazon is getting a little slower. (I guess it takes time to dig ouot of the profits!!!  ;) ;D )

Cheers

Ah yes, Amazon is getting burried deeper and deeper in the green stuff so now they have an excuse for shipping late  ::)   ;D

Hey that looks like my Gauntlet's groups with JSB 15.89 at 25yds!!  :)  I have actually never shot another pellet in the Gauntlet.  For some reason it was the first pellet I tried and never tried another after I started getting those groups.

Should be here Saturday. 2 days.
I'd also some Birchwood Casey adhesive targets, and that's arriving tomorrow. 1 day!

So, no slow down here for Amazon.

So...my constant desire to tinker with stuff has me itching to do something destructive...

After mounting my new scope last night I realized that my new one and my previous BSA adjustable scope have what may be a set screw on the power adjustment ring in the perfect position for a throw lever or cat tail.  I did some research and don't see any throw levers out there that seem to be a replacement screw, only throw levers that surround the whole ring.  Would it be possible to just replace that small screw with a longer one and some sort of spacer to make a throw lever?  I found multiple people on the interwebs asking this same question, but the only responses out there were "don't mess with things you don't understand, you'll just break stuff and you're an idiot".  I get that, but it doesn't seem that this question is actually answered anywhere online that I could find.  Also, it seems unlikely to me that manufacturers would place these in a perfect position without ever being pointed down without it being purposefully thought out.

Has anyone ever tried this and what was your result.  I'm happy yo take criticism too, this isn't the first time I've had "brilliant" ideas that resulting in something being ruined.

Got one today and mounted it on my Diana 48.
So far it is very good, heard D48's may be scope killers.

I got the 2.5-10x42 yesterday and it will focus close enough to use in my basement, so that is good. I don't have a rifle to mount it to, but the price seemed to be good, so I ordered it anyway. When it came, Wifey found it, and was mad, at least a little bit, "What did you buy that for? You have several down in the basement already!", oh well, such is life. So far, the scope seems to be well made and operates just fine, especially for that price. Don't pass this up if you are in need of a scope like this, or maybe even if you don't need it right now.

You guys are really enablers.  I've resisted this sale since it was posted  but I finally cracked and ordered 1 of each scope.  Just couldn't pass em up any longer for this price.  I do have a new rifle arriving soon and will see how the 24x scope works on one of my long range varmint PBers that need a scope  :)

Jeff

Jeff, you know we got the best enabling forum on the web.  There is no hope for us  ;D  I almost ordered one of each too, but 2 boxes would have been hard to hide :)  I got the 2.5-10x42 yesterday.  I am hiding the Amazon box from my wife and haven't opened it yet to check the scope.  I was lucky she was in the bathroom when I heard some noise by the front door and ran to get it.  She is taking her niece out to lunch tomorrow and that's when I will open it and dispose of the cardboard.  She doesn't get involved with the garbage or recyclables :)

"Been there done that" Harry :) LOL

Can't tell you how many times I purposely intercepted the UPS guy as he delivered a new rifle and then quietly sneaked down into the basement from the outside Bilco door so the wife wouldn't see.   :)

I'm looking forward to getting the scopes.  Always nice to have a few spare scopes on the shelf  :)

I don't really need it...........but, for $30, I'd, just now, went ahead and ordered  the 6-24X as well.

Should be here Saturday. 2 days.
I'd also some Birchwood Casey adhesive targets, and that's arriving tomorrow. 1 day!

So, no slow down here for Amazon.

Harry, are you a Prime member?
Ordered on 2/13, received today 2/15, as promised by Amazon.  :D

It was already dark by the time the package arrived, but I really wanted to see how it looks at full mag.
Took the big 6-18x56 CP off the .25 Armada. However, I didn't have high 1" rings, so I had to use the 30mm rings and rubber shims to get the Discovery secured.
I set out a giant piece of course cardboard 30yd it and beamed a work light at it. Everything looks nice and clear. Took an entire magazine, 9 rounds, to get it zeroed.
Then I moved the work light down to the 50yd 1.5" steel spinner. Adjusted the AO, and visual quality looks decent even in the, less than ideal, light condition. Having never used a 24x scope, I didn't have an idea on the amount of holdover for 50yd. Sure enough I hit low. Way low. Once I raised it considerably, the pellet connected with the 1.5" spinner, so windage was right on. Even under these conditions, I can already tell the glass has much better clarity and sharpness than the $180 CP.
This Tasco scope is a winner, and will be staying on the Armada. I just need to get the proper rings for it now.

While many people use it on springers without issues, Tasco actually doesn't claim that the Varmint line is airgun rated. They actually have an airgun line.
I have the 2-10x42 a springer, and waiting to see how it hold up over time. At $30, it's not exactly a huge gamble.
I also noticed, on the Tasco website, that while the Varmint has a lifetime warranty, the airgun line doesn't state so.

Finally got to see the 6-24x in daylight, and I think it looks great for a $30 scope. Heck, I think it would like great fora $150 scope.
At 24x, I got nice details down in the +50 range. It could be brighter, but that's limited to mainly to the overall size of the scope.
Yes, I would certainly recommend this Varmint model in terms of quality, and at a measly $30, it's really a no brainer!

Well. my 2nd one missed its delivery deadline, which was yesterday.   :-[

That brings me up to having one scope for every air rifle.  ;)

It appears that it never was transferred to USPS.  Wonder if it is related to Amazon dumping a number of their "independent" shippers?

On the other hand, the rings look like they will arrive today, which were ordered the day after.   ::)

Tasco Varmint 2.5-10x 42mm True Mil-Dot Reticle, 1/4 MOA Turrets Riflescope

$24.99 today.

https://www.amazon.com/Varmint-2-5-10x-Mil-Dot-Reticle-Riflescope/dp/B0000V2BLU/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Tasco+2.5-10x42+mildot&qid=1582247529&sr=8-1 (https://www.amazon.com/Varmint-2-5-10x-Mil-Dot-Reticle-Riflescope/dp/B0000V2BLU/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Tasco+2.5-10x42+mildot&qid=1582247529&sr=8-1)

No free shipping at that price; but, they still have the $27.99 optional price w/ free shipping. I needed another Air Venturi .22 pellet pen anyway ($11.47), so I bit the bullet and ordered the Tasco scope and the pen.

Upon getting more shooting time with the 6-24x, it appears the reticle is set up in MRAD. Each click of the turret, yields a significant shift to the poi. MOA yields much smaller incremental changes with each click of the turret, which is much more desirable at typical airgun distances.
For the money, not a deal breaker.

14 inches exactly for the 2.5-10x, and 565.3g (19.94oz)

Looks like I'll be sending the 6-24X42 back for an exchange. Seems the reticle is slightly floating. It's mounted on an Armada, so hardly any recoil. To confirm, I remounted the original CP scope, and the pellets are tightly grouping as they should.

Received my $27.99 Tasco today. It was worth a roll of the dice but unfortunately, I got snake eyes. The Parallax adjustment ring is horribly stiff to adjust and almost makes a grinding noise when it is turned. Sending it back for a refund tomorrow...

Took a 2nd chance on a 2.5-10. This one works but eye position is so extremely unforgiving that I'm just going to throw it on my Regal II break-barrel which I've been meaning to sell and will keep the Hawke 3-9 which was on it.

I suspect these are mostly old stock; the box and scope on mine were still sealed and bagged, but the copyright on the cards for warrantee and registration was 2010. Online, most everybody else lists these as "discontinued".

However, it is looking nice enough. I haven't mounted it yet, but the view is fine. AO bell is stiff (old lube?), but I think I'll try a drop or two of silicone oil and see if it works smoother in a bit. Near focus is about 5 yards--good for those rare times when something pops up closer than usual!

Arrived today. Bigger than I expected.

That was the 1 thing that impressed me.  I did not expect a BIG scope like that, but I don't mind it.  It's not heavier than other 1" full-sized scopes I have, and definitely less heavy than my 30mm scopes, but the length is certainly there, and resembles my 44mm and 50mm (1") scopes in weight and length.

As far as clarity and brightness the 2.5-10x42 that I got I think is pretty average and on par with other low-priced scopes, but still a good bang for the buck.  I can't complain much for $28.  I get a darker than usual sight when it's cloudy, and the mildots get harder to see.  This scope desperately needs sunlight.  That's pretty much my only gripe - brightness is kind of below average.  Could be my scope, and not others', don't know.

Looks like the same scope is for sale at Bereli.com for $24.74 and I think it's free shipping;

https://www.bereli.com/tasco-varmint-2-5-10x-42mm-true-mil-dot-reticle-1-4-moa-turrets-riflescope/ (https://www.bereli.com/tasco-varmint-2-5-10x-42mm-true-mil-dot-reticle-1-4-moa-turrets-riflescope/)

Never heard of Bereli.com - no info on them at Resellerratings.com - are they legit?

I guess we will find out if they are legit since I just ordered the scope from them for 22.27 with a new member 10% discount with free shipping and no tax.

It says they are closed today and tomorrow and item will ship on Friday.

Well update when it gets here.

I already bought one back when the deals first came out and like the scope a lot and have had no issues with it so far. Just wish I had bought a 6x24 also when they were still in stock.

Bereli is who fills the order on Amazon.  I just ordered another one that I don't need, hard to beat for 25 bucks.  I put one on a Diana 34 and it's holding up so far.

Of the three I recently bought two of them needed minor attention, the set screws in the elevation and windage knobs needed tightened. No big deal.

When I opened the link that festis77 provided it came up with a window to join mailing list and gave the code "10off" for the discount. Not sure if it will work without joining mailing list but give it a try and see.

Jeff, I think the majority of us that ordered 1 (or 2 or 3) didn't really need a scope or 3 more scopes.  We just can't resist a bargain  ;D

I added the new Tasco to the spare scopes box.  Hope to use it 1 day or when I get the next new gun, or 2nd new one because I have 1 or 2 better spares I 'd like to try first  :)

I will try and remember to do that if it ever warms up enough to shoot.  My concern is it was about 3" high at 25 yds so I had to go 48 clicks or so down, I fear I may be near the end of the range which in my understanding is harder on scopes.  If anyone knows what the adjustment range is I'd love to know.

I am not sure of the range of movement in these scopes but the fact you had to go down is much less of an issue than if you had to go up. Going down puts more tension on the erector tube spring so its held more securely versus going up to far which lessens the tension allowing the erector tube to float inside the scope easily causing POI shifts.

My (limited) experience is that that is a common problem with the cheaper scopes I have had. It is not unusual for me to put a thin shim on the rear scope mount. In fact, I had to do that just yesterday.

Lizzie, jccams gun was shooting high not low so the shim would need to be placed under the front scope mount not the rear. Its unusual for it to be shooting high since most guns have some barrel droop whereas his appears to have barrel rise.

I did use a Diana lock down mount with droop compensation which is why I think it was shooting high.  I was thinking about using a non droop compensated mount and see what happens.  I do not know how much droop the Diana mount compensates for.  At 25 yds how much does this mount raise the POI?

This one on PA lists 0.025” of compensation with a length of 4.75 which works out to something like 18.9in at 100 yards or  4.7in at 25 yards.

Did you reverse the mount by mistake since if installed with arrow pointing forward it should be shooting low not high unless the scope was nowhere close to being optically centered when installed on the gun. You may want to count clicks to center the scope and see where it hits with scope reticle centered.

I ordered a second one and already installed on a 6.5 creedmor bolt rifle that I bought yesterday from Academy. Originally was planning to put on a high end scope but don't have the budget for it yet so thought to give that a try. Later today is range time and going to start sighting it in at 50 100 and finally 200 yards. Wish me luck, it's my first center-fire rifle, I hope the scope is up to the task

Thanks Jeff. Will report later today. It is a Mossberg Patriot predator with fluted barell and bolt in a nice camo pattern. Will post pics. Got it for a bit over 300$! It also has a threaded barell for a suppressor down the road. I bought some 20$ Leupold high rings, of course the Tasco scope and Hornady 240 gn black ammo. At almost 1$ per round I better sight in this thing quickly. Wind is horrible again for almost a week straight now so I just might stick to a 100 yards and wait for a calm day to stretch it out to 200.

Well back from the range. Wish I could report success but by the fourth shot the scope was done with as if an earthquake had hit a glassware store. Couldn't find paper at 75 yards with those first four shots. Just came back from Academy where I bought a vortex scope hoghunter. Not the scope you would use to shoot long range but I am not planning on hunting further than 300 yards again will try and post pic of the reticle but O don't know if it will allow me to do it( I am on my smartphone). I take it you didn't put the Tasco scope on an airgun if you are hunting at 300yds.  What gun destroyed the scope?  There are many reviews on Amazon that make it clear that this scope doesn't hold zero on PB's, or lasts more than a few shots, not even on AR15's (.223/5.56).

Ah yes, not surprised really.  I got lucky I bought 2 BSA 3-9x40 mildot A/O scopes from Natchez on sale for $29.99 back in '14 or '15 and put them on 2 AR15's.  They have both held up really well and hold zero after ~1,200 rounds combined so far.  I tried to buy a couple of more of those BSA scopes a month later, but that model was apparently discontinued.  This BSA scope blows away the Tasco scope in clarity and brightness and is smaller and lighter.  This experience made me trust BSA scopes as far cheap scopes go over any other Chinese made low priced scope.  The BSA 3-12x44 30mm Tactical mildot A/O I got for $78 during the last big BSA sale in 2018 that a lot of GTA members went in on, has been an outstanding performer on a couple of my centerfire rifles.

Yesterday I had  nothing to do so I took a .177  Disco that hasn't held air for a long time and decided to disassemble it and change all the seals.  Upon completion I aired it up to 2000 psi and put it aside.  This afternoon I checked on the rifle and was pleased to find the air gauge still sitting on 2000 psi  :)  The rifle had been sitting unused in the gun safe for almost 2 years and since it had no scope on it I decided to mount the Tasco 2.5 x 10 x 42 on it, head out to the backyard range and see how the scope performed.  I was very pleased to say the least.  Very nice crisp, clear optics.  AO worked very well and within a few shots had the Disco sighted in dead on with CPHP's and JSB Exact pellets.  This is the scope I bought from Amazon a while back and the one I ordered the other day from Bereli was shipped yesterday so I'm glad I'll have another one of these on the shelf  :)  I may put that one on my .22 Disco :)

Anyway, I love the scope and very glad I bought 1 from Bereli...... thinking about ordering another one  :)

mine is very nice and clear.  AO works without any problem.  Yours might be a fluke given how many ppl here are satisfied with it.

I don't know what I am doing wrong. It usually says file too big or something like that.

If you read my posts earlier on this thread I mentioned that I bought 2 of them. One works great on a Ruger Impact max .22 and the other that got destroyed was on a 6.5 creedmor center-fire rifle more of an experiment if anything.

This one?

Looks like the same scope, except mine have the BSA logo in white letters and there is nothing in "gold" on them.  I believe this is the newer one which at the time I could not find for less than $65.  Also I am pretty sure mine said 14oz or 14.5oz, not 15.6 and when I called BSA (who told me it was discontinued) they said mine was a 2011-14 run and it was being replaced by a newer one.  So I bet this is it.  The guy said they replace/upgrade most of their scopes about every 4 years or come up with new lines of scopes every few years.  I think the internals are mostly the same and they only make cosmetic changes to them hoping to boost sales.

OK blade knife?
Good in theory but I'd be worried about slitting my wrist while looking for my keys. Or shining the flash  light in my eyes while field dressing my deer.
Id rate it on the same scale as a spork. Glad to have it a fork and a spoon would be better

I bought a pair of these off eBay.  They were a big disappointment.  The clarity was decent.  The turrets were nice and clicky.  The reticle looked nice.  That was the end of the good parts.

I was having great difficulty with POI shifts on my gun and finally determined it was the scope.  The crosshairs would wander around even under the lighter recoil of my semi-auto PCP.  The absolute proof came when it was hitting to the right and I moved the crosshairs to the left what should have been the proper amount.  It moved way more to the left than it should have.  Then I moved it back and with the first shot it hit the same spot then incrementally walked back with each shot...in a nice left to right string.  That makes it really hard to get it sighted in, but that would be barely tolerable if it stayed put once it settled down, but that was not my experience.  I even tried gently tapping gently on the side of the scope with my palm to "seat" it into the final position but that would just cause it to move all over.

A couple other points.  I eyebox is really small...you have to get your eye centered just right.  The field of view is pretty narrow too.

I returned both of them.
