Title: Spanish Daisy wadcutters .177 500ct $3.19 on Amazon
Post by: DanD on December 15, 2019, 01:26:02 AM
I bought a few tins of these to include with some P17 Christmas gifts, and any extra tin to try for myself.  They shoot really well for the money, so I bought a bunch more.

My Daisy 880 shoots the Daisy Flat-Nosed pellets made in Spain VERY accurately.

The Daisy Flat-Nosed pellets made in Spain were hard to load and shot bad in my P17.

Good point- I did not try them in a P17 because I haven't received mine yet, but they shot pretty well in a vintage HW rifle. The Spanish Winchester Domes also shoot well in that gun.

Not a fan of Daisy pellets in general. And, these in particular. Though the .22 caliber wadcutters were not too bad. But they have been discontinued.

These Daisy wads shoot very well in my P3. Haven't received the P17s yet...

For those in the Northwest and near BiMart stores, they have the old style belt clip pouch things with 500 Daisy "Flat Nosed" pellets for $2.50... at least the few stores I've been to have, I"ve grabbed 4 so far, probably should grab more at least for the containers as I sure miss them... they were handy when that was the norm in the '90's...

Been watching these and many other Amazon stocked pellets for a couple years. You never know when Amazon will throw a low bargain price on any pellets.

I consider this a GOOD price for these pellets and received my 10 tins yesterday.

Only 2 tins (carded) were dented. That's actually GOOD for Amazon. BE AWARE that Amazon will throw loose tins (like H&N pellets) in a big box with little or no padding. If not carded expect mostly dented tins. If carded expect some dented tins. In some cases pellets will be scattered inside the box and worst case lost through a blown-out seam in the outer packing. Sorry Amazon, but your packaging skills are excrement.

These Daisy wadcutter pellets work well in about 1/3 of my springers, all my multi-pumpers, and a few CO2 rifles as well. They make the nice clean holes in paper targets as expected. IMHO they are also better than hollow points at short range small critter dispatch, if you can get good consistent accuracy within ~50'. They seem to PUNCH a hole through meat like they do on paper. Small game "pops" and then drops.

Tried a few last night in a Hatsan Mod125 177 just for fun. I normally don't shoot a pellet this light in the Mod125. Chronograph said 1100 fps at 30' and my ears were ringing from the supersonic CRACKS! Nice round holes in the paper and all 3 holes touching. A pleasant surprise. I switched to a lower power rifle after that for fear the neighbors might get curious about the LOUD CRACKING sounds coming from my basement ;)

I cautiously only order 3 tins. They are arriving today. I was sceptical ready some of the other posts and wanted to try them first, but after reading yours I wish I had ordered more.

Last night Hatsan (I had emailed them Sunday asking if they had a reclaimed Striker wood stock, they responded yesterday after lunch, negative on the reclaimed stock so I ordered a new one to for my Edge .22)emailed me back and agreed to ship the new Striker stock free using the FREESHIP deal which expires today even though they usually don't include parts in the free shipping. So my extra money is spent. (HATSANUSA has alway had the prompt and very helpful customer service with me, I don't understand other's negative post concerning the Customer Service. )

It is cold out but I wanted to try out these wadcutters.  I chose my Browning Buck Mark break barrel pistol. At 20 feet shooting off-handed, standing,  out of 10 shots 8 hit in the black 1/2" circle. They are nice. I'm ordering the last 8 tins.

I haven't tried these in my P 17 and I can imagine they would be difficult to load, but most of my other break barrels that I have tried seem to do well with this pellet  I've ordered 11 tins.

Here we go again. These were scheduled to be delivered yesterday.

If you use Amazon Prime video and rent or buy videos, you can get a $1 off every order. by choosing slow shipping.

Buy 1 tin at a time, select slow shipping, and get each tin for effectively $2.19.

Got my five tins yesterday.  Despite being out of stock, you can still order them at the same price: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002XP1NG/ (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002XP1NG/)

Pellets look nicely made, with a very thin lip on the skirt.  Don't see any obviously damaged pellets.

Head and skirt diameters are .179 and .180".

That is large at the head and small at the skirt, compared to other pellets (cheap H&Ns below have .177 head and .183" skirt).  May make direct finger loading of these Daisy pellets a little hard.  With these dimensions, these pellets are probably OK for probe loaded pneumatics, but less that ideal for break barrel springers (because the latter need the skirt to hold the pellet, until releasing it after pressure builds).

Rather than speculate, I went and I tried them in my Baikal MP-46M SSP pistol:  They are hard to load:  In terms of force, and in terms of keeping the pellet coaxial with the bore.  The high force was not painful over 20+ shots, just undesirable and a nuisance.

I shot about 20 of them and got a muzzle velocity of 450 to 455 FPS out of the 46M.  I tried shooting ten at 10 meters, using two hands unsupported.  Had no trouble keeping them in an inch; although, rested this pistol can do much better than that.  So, they are "accurate enough"; just a pain to load.

Comparing the cheap Daisy pellets to these cheap H&N pellets, I think the latter are better value (for me):
www.pyramydair.com/s/p/H_N_Excite_Econ_II_4_5mm_7_4gr_Airgun_Pellets_500ct/1526 (https://www.pyramydair.com/product/h-n-excite-econ-ii-4-5mm-7-4gr-airgun-pellets-500ct?p=1526) at $4.50 per 500.

My impressions of the H&Ns here:
I just did a quick function check of these pellets using my Baikal 46M SSP pistol.  Specifically, to compare the new H&N Excite Econ V2 (the deal listed in the OP), against the Excite Econ V1 pellet that some disparage:

The wadcutter head shape is slightly different, with V2 having a larger flat and a steeper bevel at the head OD.  See image below.

V2 is slightly harder to load in the 46M, suggesting a larger diameter, or longer "land" at the head OD.

Measured Head Diameter:
V2:  .177
V1:  .176

Measured Weight:
V2:  7.6 grain
V1:  7.3 grain

Measured Velocity (one foot from the crony's first "screen"):
V2:  480 FPS
V1:  500 FPS

Shooting quickly, two handed at 10 yards, off a tall cardboard box as a rather wobbly makeshift rest;
V2 groups about 1/2" higher than V1, using the same aimpoint.
See image below (V2 on the right; using modified standard air pistol target with regular scoring rings)

V2 seems to group tighter than V1, in the sense of few outliers within 10 shots.

Now, the V2 shot in the 8 ring on the right hand target was my fault.  My mind was wandering, with "this is the 10th shot"; and I squeezed it off despite having lost focus on aiming.

I realize this is not a full evaluation, but wanted to confirm that these pellets appear to be good value at $4.50 per 500.  At least for plinking and short range pesting.

they seem to shoot well in most of my .177 guns, I normally buy them from tractor supply when they have them.

The Winchester domes seem to do well also.

Not JSB good, but good enough for plinking in the back yard.

Dan, I also want to thank you for posting about this deal.

I've only bought Daisy pellets a few times since I got into airguns in 2012 but each time they were thoroughly abysmal.  Embarrassingly bad.  For example, some measured 0.173" - 0.174" (4.39mm - 4.42mm).  And I'm not talking about the outliers...that was the typical size.  "Groups" like shotgun scatter.

So I was skeptical when I saw this deal but with your endorsement and the fact there was a SPA CP2 (Diana Chaser) under the tree for my son, I figured we'd give them a try.  At the very least I figured they'd be fine for some short range practice.

Turns out they group quite well.  Getting nickel- and quarter-sized groups at 25 yards, and that's with a little 4x scope on top with a heavy reticle so aiming precision isn't the best.  They're won't hang with JSB or H&N but that's waaaaay better than I expected and very respectable for a cheap pellet.  Better than Crosman's wadcutters of late and cheaper too.

The older tin I have on the shelf says Made in China and they are hot garbage so hopefully they'll keep the quality up now that they're being made in Spain.

Tried some of these in my Umarex APX NPG today, and they shot okay. Hope they keep shooting well, as I have quite a few.

Daisy flatnose pellets (made in Spain)shoot extremely well in all four of my 880’s, and my 1377 too.
I get them for $1.98 for 250 in the plastic clip on your belt packs at Academy Sports.

Thanks!   I guess I need to try them in my B17 pistols.   Mainly so I can recommend them or not to those who I have gifted so many B17 to.

The 7.4gr Crosman wadcutters tested the most accurate, but I am having a hard time finding them locally and finding them at a good price online.

Even at the current price of $5.99 at Amazon for 500, if they work well, that isn't bad...

Thanks again!

You can order those Crosman wadcutters in the milk cartons, which contain 1250, for a pretty good savings. Maybe Amazon?

Hope they work out for you in the B17. It’s always nice to find a really cheap pellet that’s truly accurate and consistent. I have’nt found a bad tin of them yet as far as my 880’s go, and i’ve Shot thousands of them over the last year.
