FedEx says they are on the truck and out for delivery.
Should be here by the end of the day today.
Not sure if I can give them a full review. We got about 3-4inches of snow last night.
-
They are here!
First note, they come in little test tube like containers with a rubber like stopper. I did not see any indicator on the tubes of which weight slug was which. Make sure you keep them in the package in the correct slot marked on the cardboard in the package. Or, like I did, write the size and weight on masking tape and wrap it around the tube.
Tried to weight them, but my scale is not precise enough.
Tthere were some dark flakes in the tubes. The slugs seemed to have some kind of shiny coating on them.
Most appeared to be well formed. A few had what looked like nicks or dings in the skirt(??) or the mouth of the HP.
Here are some pics:
-
Make sure and spend a little time and clean those up, as it looks as though H&N in their rush to market, skipped the cleaning process and then coated them with something.
I've never seen any of my h&n pellets with that stuff all over them, or with chunks of scrap material on them as well.

What should I clean them with?
Unfortunately not sure when I can actually test them. Got 3-4 inches of snow last night.
-
I have one sample pack coming, the .217 size. PA was out of the .218 and had an estimated delivery date of March! I think I'll wait on those and just try these... I also ordered some of the FX Hybrid slugs to try..
As far as cleaning, I use one of those ultra sonic cleaners that's made for jewelry. You vann find them pretty cheap on Amazon and they do a good job of cleaning pellets, so they should work for these as well.
I hate that H&N doesn't mark those tubes with the correct size and weight. Since I only have the one sampler, I'll probably just write the weight on the tube with a permanent sharpie.

Lou over on AGN, who I read about it first happening to, says he cleaned them with hot water and dawn dish detergent, let them dry then lube as usual..
He goes into detail here:

I pre- order and pre-paid for mine.
March, dang!

Yep, apparently the .218 size is way more popular than the .217! That or they are very rare! :o

Got out the dial calipers and a Mrod magazine last night for the 0.217dia slugs.
Carefully dumped out 10 slugs in each weight on a piece of foam.
H&B 0.217 dia,
21grn
OAL – 6x0.264, 4x0.263
23grn
OAL – 2x0.283, 3x0.287, 2x0.288, 3x0.289
25grn
OLA – 4x0.302, 2x0.304, 3x0.305, 0.307
27grn
OAL – 2x0.320, 4x0.321, 4x0.322
30grn
OAL – 2x0.341, 2x0.342, 2x0.344, 3x0.345, 0.347
Then loaded up all 10 of each weight and used a needle head to simulate the bolt. All cycled with no problems.

I received my sampler pack yesterday. Some of you may have seen my post in the PA Gate, they essentially got scrambled in shipment. I think the package was damaged in transit and the blister pack opened spilling its contents. I have no way of knowing if any of the test tubes spilled, but when FedEx put the tubes back in the blister pack and taped it up, they certainly weren't in the correct spaces! PA is sending me a free replacement sample pack, but in an attempt to sort and salvage the slugs I do have, I needed to weigh them. I don't have a scale that will register the weight of the individual slugs, so I thought I'd just weigh each tube, assuming there were supposed to be 30 slugs per tube, I figured I'd be able to sort the tube by weight and figure out which was which and then label the tubes. Well, I'm here to tell you that H&N either can't count or is very generous with their slugs! None of the tube contained exactly 30 slugs! So, I emptied each tube separately and counted out 30 slugs per tube and weighed them. This got me where I needed to be with the weight of each tube. I then counted the extras that came from each tube and discovered I had plenty of spares! Here's the breakdown:
21gr = 47 slugs
23gr = 45 slugs
25gr = 40 slugs
27gr = 36 slugs
30ge = 33 slugs
So, there were actually 51 more slugs than advertised! I did notice that with only 30 slugs per tube, the 21gr - 25gr tubes did look way less than full, so I assume the machine that fills these tubes probably goes by volume, not actual count! I still think H&N should mark the tubes somehow so you can distinguish one weight from another just in case this sort of thing happens. Maybe color coded caps or something!

Interesting.
Mine were double wrapped.
The blister packs, then a small bubble wrap self sealing envelope, then into a larger bubble wrap self sealing envelope.
It does appear there are more of the lighter weights then the heavier weights.
I agree with you about somehow marking the tubes themselves. The OAL does seem to support the idea of the correct tube/slugs are in the correct slot in the blister pack.
Weight would verify that.
But like you, I dont have a scale that precise.

Tagging along for the education.
-
I took a sharpie and wrote on the caps of the tubes putting the diameter and weight to keep them in order.
-
At 0700 this morning it was -15 degrees.
Currently it is -9 degrees. But sunny!
Sunday/Monday we are supposed to be back into the upper 30s low 40s. Hope I can at least put a few downrange, and across the chrony.

They only had the .217 in stock when I ordered so I just put the weight on the side of the tube with a label maker. I'm hoping to chrony some this weekend. I want to see how they do from the Crown Continuum using the 380mm barrel and the 700mm barrel.
-
I did some slug testing today. I put the long (700mm) barrel on my Crown and set the TP to .25/.30 for the testing. I tested the 5 different weights of the H&N .217 slugs and the 22 grain FX Hybrid slugs.
They all preformed well from an accuracy perspective, even though the furthest I was shooting was 37 yards. Here is a break down of the speed and power of each:
H&N .217 Slugs:
21gr - avg 974.4 FPS, 44.28 FPE
23gr - avg 924.4 FPS, 43.65 FPE
25gr - avg 891.6 FPS, 44.14 FPE
27gr - avg 844.6 FPS, 42.78 FPE
30gr - avg 813.0 FPS, 44.04 FPE
FX Hybrid Slugs:
22ge - avg 926 FPS, 41.9 FPE
I found the 25gr and 30gr H&N Slugs grouped the best, but they were all quarter sized or smaller.
Here is a teaser, I had a paint can that would no longer spray, but it apparently still had plenty of pressure.

I just ordered a couple sample packs from NSA as well. Looking forward to seeing how well they perform. I'm really hoping one of them really shines above all the others because their new pricing is extremely competitive, way better than H&N and FX!

Yes they are. If I were going to build a gun around a slug, the NSA would be the one for price alone!
-
yep, you wont see that trash or oil on nicks slugs.....
and i bet your groups tighten up a bunch too ;)
-
Finally!
It was decent enough today to get the MRod out and the new H&N slugs.
The .217s, more like a shot gun pattern. This was not much of a surprise as my MRod never seemed to like the 5.51mm diameter pellets. I only shot the 21grn, .217s.
The .218s (5.53mm), different story!
See the attached pics.
The first pic is of the 21grn .218s. First three shots are below the "8." Then I adjusted and the next 6 are that tight group just to the right of the 8.
The last shot, I used as a spotter for the 23grn .218 pellets, in the second pic. That is a 10rnd (plus the one 21grn spotter slug) group.
-
Looks like you found a winning combo! Time to enjoy that long range fun now ;)

Deckard, :)
I'm so glad that you found a slug that seems to work for you!! And I appreciate that someone other than FX owners are posting their results (at the AGN forum it get the distinct impression that only owners of FX guns on stereoids are allowed to shoot slugs (or at least post their results).... ;) ).
Now, I read the post above 3 times, and I'm still left wondering – at what range did you make this groups? I have plenty of cheap pellets that would do groups like that at 25y – yet the whole idea behind slugs is to shoot long range (beyond 50y).
Admittedly, I'm really not in a position to complain...! Because to this day I have failed to post my own slug results at 100y :-[ –– you're ahead of me, Deckard! :)
Happy shooting!!
Matthias
PS: What barrel did you shoot these slugs with?

Do you know what speed your shooting the .218's?

And what distance?

PS: What barrel did you shoot these slugs with?
My bust sir.
These were taken at 30yrds.
Bi-pod prone, shooting mat, shooting jacket. No rear bag, just my own hand.
This is a modded MRod, but with a GEN I barrel but I ported and polished the barrel.
Next time I get the chance, I will take it out to 50 and 100yrds.
But for the next few days, rain . . . bummer.
-
Do you know what speed your shooting the .218's?
Next time I get the chance, I will put them across a Magnetospeed V2.
Based off the forecast, might be a few days or so. :-[
-
Comparing the slugs to my Five in a dime challenge, I think these are grouping better: https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=158190.0 (https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=158190.0)

Finally got a good day to put two of the .218 caliber slugs across the chrony: The 21grn slugs and the 23grn slugs.
Same set up as before, shots taken at 30yrds, bi-pod prone, shooting mat, shooting jacket.
Even the the chrony attached (Magnetospeed V3), once I figured out the change in POA/POI and which hash mark to use on the reticule, I got a decent group for the 23grn slugs.
Here is the 21grn results:
-
And the 23grn:
-
Here is the pic of the 23grn.
The pic on the right, the little yellow star at the bottom of the "C" in "Challenge" was my POA. The two impacts, the one on the slightly upper right is the first shot of the 21grn slug. The second impact slightly to the lower left, is the 23grn slug.
The left pic is the group I was able to shoot once I figured out the hash mark on the reticule. Not bad for having a chrony attached to the end of the barrel.
-
Got a shipment of H&N .218, 21grn slugs in the other day.
Did some tuning to bring the FPS/Ftlbs up.
-
And here is where I settled on this tune.
-
Deckard,
you had quite a bit of umpf left in your gun, wow, going up to 39FPE effortlessly, nice. 👍🏼😊
Have you been able to stretch it out any further? Or has Covid been messing with your airgunning? Sure did with mine, I hope to get out to do slug testing this week after a 4 months abstinence....! 🙄

I have been able to do some testing. More to do with weather than CV19.
Anyways, once I bumped it up to the 900fps area, I thought I started to get more flyers. Then I thought, maybe it was barrel harmonics as I increased the speed. So, I thought I would add a barrel band to reduce the harmonics.
Well, I was surprised to see some of the groups got worse.
Thinking maybe it was the position I was in (new shooting lane) rather than barrel harmonics.
I am going to run another experiment with and without the barrel band.
Will post pics later.
-
Cool! Looking forward to seeing your results.
Just 5min ago I got green light to go to my slug testing grounds...! 😊 I'm excited.
