Title: Scuba sticker "for non diving use only"
Post by: SnoValley on August 12, 2011, 04:51:23 PM
I've seen stickers for scuba tanks that notify the fill stations that the tank is for non-breathing air or non-diving use or words to that effect.
What does these stickers allow you to do? Is there any purpose? I think the tanks still need to follow a hydro and visual inspection schedule, don't they?
Can anyone whose is knowledgable in this, please advise?
If they are a good thing, can someone tell me where to get one?
Thanks
PS I did search............

If you are going to have the tank filled at a dive shop, fire department or some other type of fill shop it will need a valid hydro as the hydro is not to check if the air is good but to make sure it will not rupture. I am not sure of what PSI they test at but I would guess it is somewhere in the area of 1.5 times the max presure of the the tank is rated for.

The test is at 5/3rds the rated pressure.... 3000 psi rated, 5000 psi hydro....

Yes I'm aware of the hydro procedures...That is not my question if you re-read my post it is about the stickers and their value to a non diving user of scuba tanks.

Sounds like a good sticker if you are dealing with dive shops that don't believe you when you say "I'm using it to power my airgun." Yes, no matter what you are using it for dive shops need the tank to be hydro'd and visually inspected at the normal increments, no exceptions. The sticker will just save you time explaining what you are doing with the rifle I presume. Most tank shops have dealt with paintball players or airgunners before. Hopefully I helped.

Some dive shops will not fill tanks for air gunners unless the tank has such a sticker on it.  Without such a sticker these shops are concerned about any possible liability on their part.  There is a dive shop by me that has such a policy.  If your tank does not have such a sticker then they will affix a sticker to your tank prior to filling it.  They of course also will not fill a  tank that is not hyro'd and visually inspected.

I'm fortunate that the dive shop where I bought my tank will also fill it for my Discovery. It has every test sticker necessary but it does not have any sticker saying it's for air gun use only. When I approached the owner and ask if he would fill a tank for that purpose, he replied he filled paint ball tanks as well so mine wouldn't be a problem. I'm sure some dive shops will require such a sticker to cover themselves.

My dive shop made me sign a form saying they wen't liable for my accidents with their tank and that i would NOT use it to dive with. With me on file they are happy to fill. Sticker makes good sense though.  J

Great answers, FWIW, I've also been told that there are some shops that wont fill your tank unless you show them your scuba divers certification. So the sticker was devised as a way to make everyone happy....

As a Certified PADI Dive Master and a SCUBA diver for the past 20 years I can attest to the fact that the SCUBA industry has done one heck of a job in regulating themselves. One way they have done this is by only filling tanks for certified divers. As the economy and use for HPA have changed many shops have changed there policies but some are still SCUBA snobs or just don't want the liability. I've been carded to buy air before.

That's a great idea Jonny!! Does anyone have the resources to print a sticker with the appropriate wording and would the powers that be allow us to put the GTA logo on it for credibility?

I can print small adhesive backed stickers to say whatever you want.  I have a Shoebox compressor and am a PADI certified diver so I never thought about the need for stickers.  I'll be glad to print up a few if someone desires them.
