Title: Starting down the rabbit hole...
Post by: Martis 1 on December 10, 2019, 01:40:08 PM
A few years ago I bought my twin sons each a 1322 with carbine stocks from Walmar.  I found that even bone stock they shoot tighter groups out to 20 yards than my 392.  So... this year my Christmas present is a 1322 from the custom shop with carbine stock, 14” Crosman barrel, and long steel breech.
I already have a nice little scope in the garage, so I’ll be set.
I love my PCP’s, but this will go nicely on the outside of my hunting pack and might even see some work on backyard ground squirrels, since ranges are seldom over 15 yards.
Problem is, I haven’t even gotten it yet and I’m already looking at mods.  Thinking the 5.5” TKO on my Disco would sure be nice.  Then I saw a package containing a flat top valve/piston and spring kit for about $90 online...😋

At least you already know what you're getting yourself into.  If you run into Alice in your journey tell her hi from me.

I paid an extra 10.00 just so I couldn't mod mine. I got the lifetime guarantee.

Sometimes it ends up a little like Humpty Dumpty  :o

I do not recall if I got the warranty with my CS 1322  :-\, not that it matters much after I had it 3+ years LOL

Yeah I remember when I decided I just needed something to control the ground squirrels in the back yard and my old 397 wasn’t cutting it.  That was two break barrels, two PCP’s, and a 392 ago.  I’m pretty sure whatever I end up doing with this 1322 it’s gonna be fun!

I think the limiting factor for me is going to be the amount of money and time I seem to have to put into my PCP’s.  Had to rebuild my Disco due to a leak, then tore into the Marauder only to learn that the air tube was rusted and badly pitted.  Ordered a new air tube and various other parts, then discovered that my pump, which was the culprit, was damp and very badly corroded.  Just ordered a Hill pump to replace it, so I have some serious coin and time on that end of the hobby.  Wife/CFO is not at all happy right now...

Finishing one only encourages me to begin another..
Spare parts are the absolute worse thing to have laying around. They are merely other unfinished guns.
Case in point... I have a steel breech and a few other odds and ends laying on the bench. They whistle at me everytime I pass by them.

The 13xx is one of my most favorite airguns.

Unmodded, it is very accurate even with an OEM barrel.

Waiting for parts on mine to beautify it furthermore.

And no, I do not mod them for more power, just make them aesthetically more pleasing with better handling to boot.

As far as the accuracy of the stock 1322’s, it is indeed surprising.  One of my sons drinks these yogurt smoothies that come in 7oz plastic bottles shaped kinda like little bowling pins.  Yesterday I was taking out the recycling and found half a dozen of the empty bottles.  Since I don’t have a fill method for the PCP’s, and have shot the 392 so much lately, I pulled out the RWS34 and was knocking them down.  My son came home from class and I challenged him to some shooting.  Now he shoots the 34 better than anyone else in the family, but was missing about half the time at 22 yards.  Then he went inside and got his 1322.  Never missed after that, even when the bottles were lying on the ground with only the bottom or top to shoot at.  On top of that, every time I’d pull the 34 up to shoot, he’d wait till I was about to shoot and shoulder his little carbine and knock over the bottle I was aiming at.
Oh to be 20 again and actually have good eyes! ;)

By the way, is silicone oil OK for 1322’s?  I never understood why pure silicone oil or grease was used on PCP’s, but on pumpers people recommend other products like Secret Sauce or air tool oil...

From what I understand silicone oil is good for everything AG, except for metal to metal contact.   Of course, I could be wrong. ::)

Got the shipping notice from Crosman that my 1322 is on it way.  Then got a notice from UPS that it’s arriving Thursday and must be signed for by someone at least 21 years of age.  Funny, when UPS delivered my son’s 12 gauge after Mossberg repaired it, they left it leaning against the closed front garage door, in plain view of the street.  Sat there all day until I got home from work. ;D

Ha

You are soooooo in trouble...just a tko.

That’s how it starts, then you find Mavericks site, need a 1/2x20 threaded front sight so your DonnyFL’s will fit, oh and since you regulated and huma’d your Marauder you think a valve and piston will be cool.  Then since your 1701p has such a great trigger and Mav sells that whole setup with the walnut grips you put on said 1701p you ask Mav for a set...
Oh wait that’s me.
My bad...
Yea have fun controlling yourself...

I learned to control my Crosman Lego addiction  Yeah, me too.

Friday I'm going to pull the trigger on either a 1300Kt with an LW barrel or put the money aside for a CZ-barreled PCP.

OK I don’t have a problem.  I can control it.  My 1322 was delivered yesterday and I even signed for it.  Put the box in the bedroom on the wife’s side and didn’t even open it!  She’s gonna wrap it and put it under the tree where it will stay till Christmas morning.  And of course that fact that I’ve been spending days getting my Marauder up and running, and then tuned and sighted in, has nothing to do with it.

Can’t wait to install a scope, clean the barrel, and see how this little gun groups!

Oh and the fact that it’s sitting RIGHT THERE in a box, is indeed driving me nuts! ;D

How many licks will it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop, 1,2,3, crunch!, lets see how many days it takes before Christmas before he tears into that box! :o

She just left the box leaning against the bedroom wall, right under the light switch where I have to walk past it.  It’s just leaning there, taunting me, laughing at me... :o

I had it all planned out.  I have a really nice little Weaver 2-7 compact rimfire scope I pulled off a .22.  Rings are already in place and ready to go.  I was gonna mount it up Christmas morning and spend the day shooting in the back yard.  Now we’re planning to leave Christmas morning right after opening gifts and eating a big breakfast.  Heading down to the valley to the in-laws and spending the night.  Not coming home till the next night.  Nowhere down there to shoot, so I don’t even get to play till two days after Christmas!

I can do this!  I can leave it alone.  It’s not impossible, like going an entire day without coffee...

Good luck Ron, better you than me. I know myself all too well. I would be in there messing with it every chance I got. Although the marauder is coming along quite well.

Hey thanks!
Yeah the Marauder is coming along nicely.  This 1322 will kinda be the opposite of the Marauder.  Where the Marauder is big, heavy, and powerful, this will be much smaller and lighter, and won’t blow chunks out of the wood backstop in the yard.  It’ll also fit fairly well in my pack when I go hiking.

I just wonder if it’ll shoot the Crosman domes well, or if it’ll be like every other .22 airgun we have at the house and prefer the 18 grain JSB’s over everything else?  We’ll see.  In like 6 FREAKIN’ DAYS!!!  :o ;D

Well my trip down the rabbit hole is not starting off too well...Got the 1322 Christmas morning, and since we were heading out of town I didn’t have much time to play, but I had a Weaver rimfire 2.5-7x scope on mounts ready to go.  Mounted it up and took some quick shots at about 15 yards.  I was just resting my elbows on the spa cover.  First shots were about 6” low and 5” left.  Zeroed the scope and it seemed to shoot OK, but that was practically shooting freehand.

Last night I cleaned the barrel with a pull through and alternating dry and wet patches using goo gone.  Got it nice and clean and dry, then put a drop of Magic Sauce on the pump pivots.

This morning I set the target at 20 yards, set up the bag rests, turned the scope down to 2.5 to help with parallax (scope is fixed at 50 yards), and started shooting.  I started with 18 grain JSB’s, and ended with some cleaned and lubed Crosman Domes.  After 50 pellets, the best I could do with any pellet was a 1.5” 5 shot group at 20 yards.  The thing is shooting all over the place.

I’m gonna try a different scope, although this was the scope I initially had on my Disco, and even at this close range it worked fine.

Wondering if I just lost the “Crosman barrel lottery”?

Just mounted and zeroed a different scope with exactly the same results.  I just happen to have some of those pellets and will try them next.

I’m also wondering if the pellets are clipping the plastic front sight shroud?  Hard to tell looking at the end of the barrel.

Well look at it this way, if I can’t get the level of accuracy I need, it will be totally under control.  $104 total investment and no mods at all. ;)

I tried the Miesters and they shot the best.  5 shot group=just a hair over 3/4” outside edge to outside edge.  By comparison, I grabbed the Disco and shot a cold group right after.  It measured just under 1/4” outside edge to outside edge.  Then same with the .25 Marauder.  Right at 3/8”...

That’s what I’m hoping.  I shot another group with the RWS’s.  The first 4 looked pretty good then I got a flyer that opened it up.

I’m thinking of pulling that front sight off just in case it’s clipping.  Anybody know how to pull that off?

Geez, just went back out and tried a 10 shot group using 8 pumps instead of 10.  About a 2” spread this time. :o

Well different day, different results.  While I was drinking my coffee this morning and waiting for the temperature to at least rise above the teens, I grabbed my pull through and patches.  Began pulling dry patches and man they were dirty!  Took at least a dozen to get one that wasn’t black.  Back out and started shooting.  First 5 shot group was with 8 pumps and 18 grain JSB’s.  About a 1” group.  Then tried again with 10 pumps.  Group shrank to a bit under 3/4”, (outside edge to outside edge).  Went inside and cleaned the barrel again.  I swear after those 10 shots it was even dirtier.

Went back out and tried the RWS Miesters.  With 10 pumps, the first group was right at about 1/2”.  Second group was even smaller.

Starting to look like this is gonna work out after all.! ;D
