Title: Benjamin trail XL barrel replace
Post by: Martin trj on December 06, 2019, 11:27:40 AM
Hi guys, I really like my Ben Trail XL but it is a .177.  I'm planning to turn it into a .22.  I'm ordering the .22 barrel this weekend and I was wondering if I need anything other than the barrel assembly.  Also, I figure all the calibers are the same, the only thing different is the barrel...right?
Help please.
Thanks much
Martin

You will want to order the cocking link arm and the pin that holds it to the barrel breech. That pin can be hard to remove from the barrel you have now and this way you will have two complete set ups making it easy to switch calibers when needed/wanted. This diagram is for a NP2 gun but it would be the same parts that you need. Number 13 and 6.

If removing pin #6 it is tapered also knurled so if it dont go one way smack it the other way.

That is only to make it easy to swap.  Right?  I don’t intend to, once it’s a .22 it’s staying like that.

You can reuse 3,6, 13, 14, and 22, providing they are not damaged in the disassembly. 14 IIRC will not need to be removed as 13 and 14 should come out as an assembly. You will want a new breach seal as the new barrel will not have one. It is a very easy and straight forward swap.

Thank you Matt, you gave a much better explanation on how to and what’s needed. :D

Awesome.  I don't think it should be too complicated.  I'm getting a new seal and maybe the pin that can get damaged when I take it out.  I wasn't able to find one, any vids on how to swap the barrel?  Thant would make it so much easier.
Thanks for the info guys.

I replaced a barrel on my trail about a year ago and at first I thought it would be difficult but its really not. So here is a step by step.

1: insure gun is not cocked and loaded and on safe.

2: remove action from stock 2 screws IIRC on the under side.

3: loosen #5 before you remove pivot screw #4. Retain #3 for reassembly with new barrel.

4: Drift out #6 noting which direction as it is tapered and must go back in the same, along with #22 and 13.

5: apply grease of choice to pivot area and reverse process to put back together.

So, it looks easier than I thought but removing this darn pin is driving me insane 😵
I bought a punch and I’ve hit it with a rubber mallet and then an actual hammer and maybe it move half a millimeter.  Any ideas?
I can’t find the allen screw holding the shroud together, should I just heat and unscrew?

Try hitting from the other side. There is no set screw. That is on the NP2 series. The picture mac posted is of a Steel Eagle, NOT an Trail XL. I attached the EVP pdf.

Gotcha, the guys at Crosman told me that lol.
And now this arm came off and I can’t remember where it was 🤦🏻‍♂️

The oval end goes through the similar shaped opening in the cocking slot and rests in the cutout in the piston. Insert it before the pivot screw.

Is it supposed to look like this?

How on earth do I remove this?

Yes, just lined up better.
There are several way to remove the chisel. It MUST be pushed in. Then the pivot bushing has to be pushed out. 5/16" or 8mm. I cushion my vise jaws. I clamp at the yellow arrows while pushing the chisel(red arrow)in with the side of the vise. Clamp snug, push in, then tighten. Drive out the bushing. Then the reverse to install in the new block. Make sure the bushing is flush with the sides of the breech block and not protruding.

Got the chisel replaced.  Thanks.  I’ll worry about the dang arm when I get the pin out.

So, if the shroud doesn’t have a set screw...how do I remove it?

If it's the same as my np2, just simply unscrew the shroud

Unlike the NP2, you need to use an Allen wrench inserted into the front. Probably a 5/16. And it IS tight. Take it slow and easy.

This is what I used to remove the link pin: https://www.harborfreight.com/heavy-duty-chain-breaker-66488.html (https://www.harborfreight.com/heavy-duty-chain-breaker-66488.html)

I think the allen just removes the end cap of the shroud. Then the shroud turns off.

I heated the shroud and it came right off.  👍👍

So how do I line it up to insert the cocking arm?

Stick a screwdriver in there and twist it until you can line it up.

sounds like Matt has done this once or twice, not much to add.. When driving those pins  out , using an old drill press as an arbor press really helps , u can drive it with good leverage from the press and a steel dowel in the chuck,. ( for future reference

Thanks guys for all your help.  I was able to successfully to swap from a .177 to a glorious .22.   Btw, what would you guys recommend for it? I shoot crosman premier hollow point pellets.
👍👍
I’ve heard people say you gotta clean a new barrel, should I?

I would clean any grease or oil out of it.Try some pellets with more heft.Skenco,JSB and H&N are good ones to try.Mine shoots these well just not to the same point of impact.
