Did they mention whether to leave them cocked or not?

I don't leave my 1377 cocked or with any air pumped.

However, the one that was stolen was a 1975-6 model and I never left air in it either.   Never had a problem.

Answer:
No
Crosman's phone number is 1-800-724-7486
Crosman has excellent customer service.
I store all my guns uncocked and do not cock them until I am ready to shoot them.

Wouldn't a cocked rifle tend to have spring failure?

Actually, from what I have read about springs, it is not leaving them cocked or uncocked that wears them out.

It is actually the act of cocking, shooting, cocking, shooting, etc.   The stress wear is only during motion.

I may not have explained that very well, but that's what I have gathered over the years about springs.

Leaving them stored without a couple pumps goes against most recommendations. It’s always been the rule of thumb to store a multi pump with at least one & as many as three or four in a Steroided MSP.

I store my 2018 1322 always with one pump of air in it. I have never experienced any issues with it, also not after weeks with no use of it.
