In a few days coming to market Haendler & Natermann HN hp slugs .217 and .218 in different weights , test kit is also coming, price for 200 pcs is $15.75, let's enjoy 8)
Is the NSA reduced prices? https://nielsenspecialtyammo.com/collections/22-caliber (https://nielsenspecialtyammo.com/collections/22-caliber)

What's with those sizes? I went and slugged my BSA barrel and it's 5.57mm through the choke (could have been slightly bigger). LW says 5.62mm for their airgun barrels. Looks like those slugs are seriously undersized at only 5.51-5.53mm? To my understanding a pellet with 5.52 size refers to the pellet head which is supposed to be nose riding while skirt seals up to grooves, now if they make the whole slug body bore riding it gets easily tilted off the axis when loading and you get horrible grouping.
-
if its the same with pellets:
you cant trust the diameter thats labled on the tin.
-
They tested many barrels, i don’t think they are beginners ::)
Watch the video...

Hope they are better than their Rabbit Magnum lls

NSA, Varmint Knockers, AVS, and Griffin slugs here are all in that range. .217-.218. No difference from the guys who have been doing it awhile and they work well.

I didn't see the sample packs on PA's website. I'd want to try those before investing in a whole tin!

Agreed Dillon,
I have put VKs, AVS and Griffon slugs through my 22 Nova Liberty which is unchoked and they all shoot well. The AVS and Griffons which are dish or cup base shoot a little better than the Varmint Knockers in my gun. I expect these should shoot well also.

I have not seen the sample packs anywhere? That's what I want for starters!

Haha, no joke!

No doubt H&N knows their stuff but they are not immune to releasing junk at times. The Rabbit Magnum IIs chamber really hard and shot like hot garbage in everything I tried, even at short distances. Measuring them, my suspicions were confirmed. The "skirts" are sized like a normal diabolo pellet but they are practically incompressible like a solid slug.

My guess is the massive friction and sheared lead was causing them to scattershot. Reading the reviews on Pyramyd and here on GTA, it seems I wasn't the only one having trouble.
That said, it sounds like they are more prepared this time and I hope they are successful because it would be nice to have more choices for quality slugs.

Hi Riku is your BSA barrel a current barrel both my Buc and Urban .22 barrels slug at ~.219 groove at breech and ~.217 at groove muzzle/choke..? using a Fowler Micrometer...
My AT44 long slugs ~220 groove at Breech and is choked to about ~.215 at muzzle... has .215 bore at breech...
all three like the 30g 220 BBT sized at .217 best...
in the NSA and H&N I want to try both the .217 and .218 in my rifles to be thorough... plus if it is the .217 that is preferred by a given rifle... then I want to see if the .218 size down and shoot just as well...
In the end I like the independence of cast so am not in any hurry tho... I am glad for the fact that more options are becoming available and slugs are not just for big bores any more... Heck was buying molds before had the rifles to send the rounds in .217-.22...
in the end over the last 3-5 years it was folks like Doug(Pakprotector) Nick(NSA) the African 100m indoor group and all who took the chance on the 30g Bobs Boat Tail molds (and others)that proved it out enough that got H&N to see that it is very workable...

I have old and new .22 BSA barrels. I went and reslugged two of them. Digital vernier caliber says 5.52 and my micrometer 5.53mm ... must have been operator error. I still can't figure out why LW lists their airgun barrels at 5.62mm/.221" - is it the choke that makes for a 0.1mm difference?
-
Ric, something is wrong with that listing. Those specs are for the hornet barrel.

I know, about the same as 22lr and hornet, go to description on following link https://www.lothar-walther.de/barrel-blank/airgun/standard-profile-with-choke/1464/airgun-blank-choked-5-5mm-air-od-15-mm-l-605-mm?c=273# (https://www.lothar-walther.de/barrel-blank/airgun/standard-profile-with-choke/1464/airgun-blank-choked-5-5mm-air-od-15-mm-l-605-mm?c=273#)

it'd be great if they worked out to be accurate. So far all their slug-like offerings have not worked out for me. Rabbit Magnums, PileDrivers and the Grizzlies.
Rick Morril on ebay has some nice .25 slugs that are decently accurate out of my Sumatra. The Varmint Knocker slugs also shoot well. My new Bullboss in .22 should be here shortly, so it'd be nice to find a slug that will shoot accurately out of it.
-
.25 Grizzlys worked ok in my bt65, good enough for 50yard plinking/pesting.
Really looking forward to the .25 slugs. But they should offer a wider variety of diameters imo.
-
If someone tests these in their BSA or Gamo PCP I'd really like to hear what slug worked best and what kind of accuracy it produced.

Thanks to each of you posting in this tread for offering me another opportunity to display my ignorance.
Hope it doesn't bother you.
What is the reason for shooting slugs instead of pellets?
I could make an (un)educated guess; but would rather hear the facts

Ed,
In simplest terms a gun which will shoot slugs well, will shoot them better at longer ranges than Diabolo pellets.
At thirty yards my Liberty will shoot Barracuda and similar weight dish base slugs through the same hole. (This is a very general statement).
At 100 yds I've shot 1" groups with the "right" slug versus 1 1/2" with the 'cudas.
Slugs have been expensive to date compared to pellets, With NSA's high speed swaging machine and H&Ns new offerings this appears to be changing.
Not all guns will shoot slugs better than pellets.

Mind heck no... responsible yes...It is so much better that it caries the responsibility to learn its maximum range for safety reasons... a pellet caries the same responsibility at less distance... from a 50-200+ fpe pcp a sub 12 fpe pumper all carry that responsibility... so yep if you do not know ask...also ricochets tend to carry a lot farther..!

Better energy retention and less windage needed....
