As much as I love the front of my synthetic 392S, that hump for a cheek rest on the stock pretty much turned the gun into a scope only deal. Maybe I wouldn’t be so ticked about the new stock but my 392 wooden stock version with a Williams Peep sight was such a pleasure to shoot it made the work of pumping it worth it, not so much with the new one. As much as I hate to do it, I’m ready to take the new one out to the belt sander and look for a cheek rest sticky pad to cover my tracks.

I agree - I just bought a 397s and cannot get my cheek down to the sight line.
I also have a Williams peep sight I was planning to use - but not now.
I bought the Baker mount and added the BSA RD30 Red Dot - and like it.

There is a guy ( Rentless Holiday) in the GTA Classifieds with a wood stock 397 and he is looking to trade for one with a plastic stock.
Hook up with him and just trade gunstocks.

Is the stock hollow? If so, be careful...

I have the BSA red dot sight too. Though they say it's a 4 or 5 moa dot, it's really much smaller. That's a good thing. Mine is like 7 years old and doing fine. I have it on my Daisy 880. I hope to use this combination for night ratting.

Here is a pic of my 397s with Baker mount and BSA RD30 ( I got from PA using the $25 discount ).
I also removed front sight and put on Sheridan hand grip for normal pumping configuration.

Plinker, I’ve been working with it and if there is an up side to it its that the front blade is so high on the peep sight an elevation aiming error is pretty much non existent it just takes a lot more effort to get a sight picture. I don’t see a scope or red dot as an option for me when I consider the cost and loss of pumping comfort. I can tell that after about 60 70 shots I’ve gotten to the point I can hit a dime at 25 ft so until I get the nerve to rework the stock, that will have to do.

Link to Sheridan Hand Grips currently on Ebay

Frank - Plinker is a GTA classification for how many posts you have made.

Clearly they raised the comb for use with a scope, but failed to add a built in dove tail for the scope. I was planning to add a Kydex adjustable comb to my woodie but maybe I just need to look for a used 39X to borrow the stock from.

A Benjamin 392 in Synthetic ? I must be the last to know.
I didn’t like it as a kid, doubt if that will change even with a synthetic stock.
It was too heavy, too hard to pump for a kid, ya needed longer arms. Old man now, heart patient. Don’t need anymore pains. LOL. Ya gotta buy an accessory to attach a scope (non Crosman part). Don’t get it myself. But I do wish all you folks the best of luck with it.

I'm quite perplexed over the 39x with synthetic stocks. A raised comb but Crosman didn't change the receiver so there's a "factory" method for attaching a scope?
This is clearly a case of Upper Mgmt asking the Customer Service Team "what do people really want" and then doing the exact opposite.

GREAT OBSERVATION !
! YooHoo, Crosman. Pay attention.

Crosman service is exemplary, but how they listen to customer *wants* has never been stellar.
Too many accountants involved in AG development I think...
-
Yep, it’s all about the money.
How many 39xs have been sold over time ? With a few truly good improvements, I think would sell many more.
A new generation or two might find them enjoyable.

I'm guessing the switch to synthetic was more of a bean counter move than what they think people want.

That’s just to bad.Pumpers have always been my thing and I really want a 392,i grew up shooting a 342 and it was great, but after reading all the negatives about the newer 392 it keeps me from clicking on that buy it button.
Pump arm issues, crooked front sight issues, horrible trigger, overspray one the barrel.Even Tim from mac 1 says he won’t even steroid them.

That's your call, my friend, but I'd give it a go anyway.
Still a good pumper. I had the overspray issue and crooked sight. Took about 10 seconds with a file to reshape the sight, another 10 to use some matching black enamel, and then about 10 minutes with bamboo skewers, some cotton gauze, and nail polish remover to square away the muzzle. Two hundred plus kills later, I strongly doubt nay of the pests I've killed were aware my 392PA was "defective". I felt no need to do any further work on mine since accuracy was paramount, not power, and 5 pumps is plenty for everything I kill.
Could always scrounge up a used pumper from Baker or eBay, or maybe put out a classified.

I agree you should try the 392s - the black plastic stock is nice in my opinion.
I think it is as good as the newer 392 wood stock, it does not compare to my Sheridan Streak stocks.
The main problem of the synthetic stock to me is the sight line using open or peep sights.
I wish Crosman would machine in a dovetail into the top of the receiver.
