Title: Chipper #17
Post by: dk1677 on August 21, 2010, 08:02:24 PM
I knew he was out there as I saw him the the other day, Today he showed up and was munching on something he found at about 30 yards . I grabbed the 850 and took aim and let a RWS SHP go ,it hit his chest and exited just above the tail.  (http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/bb138/dk1677/100_2205.jpg)

What was he munching on? Was he a pest munching on your fruit tree or depriving the family pet of its' food? Did you kill him just to get another kill under your belt? I'm just curious as to whether this was a necessary action since you didn't give any details as to the reason for the killing of a chipmunk. It's what separates hunters from those who simply hunt and those who simply kill it because it's there.

I am no saint, as i to have taken "shots-of-opportunity". It was 1967 and i was a kid with a new bb gun who didn't know any better. Be it squirrels, cats, dogs, next door neighbor, it didn't really matter. My Daisy couldn't do any real damage so i shot just to shoot.

Was the killing done out of necessity or was it your necessity to kill.

RodentsRapture,  why did you make this post?    As is stated, " if you oppose or do not condone" do not enter the 'Hunting Gate'.  If the Hunting Gate bothers your sence of morality  do not go there.

Sorry if it offended you Rodent, but they are pests, they eat roses, tomatoes, apples, dig holes all over and get in my shed. As all dogs are fenced or leashed and there are no other natural predators they proliferate. Some good advice by Bogey

you posted while I was typing. Now i have to star all over.
My question was, Was it out of necessity or a kill just to get a kill? Thank you dk1677 for clearing it up and nice shootin.
I don't know what Bogey was reading but it appears he lost track of the question i was asking. To date i have eliminated 66 tree-rats. 64 from my pear tree over the past three years. I watch the pears grow every year and have yet to get a single one. Tree-rat 65 and 66 fell today from my next-doors pecan tree. My neighbors yard and my driveway fill with broken pecan shells every year and it right after they have cleaned out my pears so i eliminated two from his tree today. All done out of necessity to eliminate pest. Tree-rats kill trees which is what the removal of the fruit before ripening does.
I don't have chips so i don't know what their mode is. If they are pest within your comfort then by all means they should be eliminated. YOU KILLEED ALVIN, lol

That's ok Dave, shoot them all!  We had 2 good tomotoes left and my wife was going to bring them in today after we got back from a long weekend away.  Well we got home today and found them all chewed up.  1/2hr later I spotted a chipmunk run from the direction of the tomatoes on the side of the house to a dead log in the back!  I thought I got rid of them all, but they are still around.  They 'll be getting some lead very soon!

Nice 30yd shot btw!!  :)

oh chipmunks are very destructive little beasts.  they will dig out a foundation in a few weeks.  up in PA my stepdad had to spend about 8000 dollars to fix a dug out foundation that was ruined by chippers.
