Title: Fall Hunting - 22 cal Summit Ranger - JSB Hades Pellets *Graphic Picture*
Post by: A.K.A. Tommy Boy on October 25, 2019, 09:15:45 PM
Short Quick Hunt Today, Testing Out The Hades Pellets In The Summit Ranger.

I did mostly yard work this afternoon getting up fall leaves. I finished up with the yard work around 4:45 pm and decided to make a short quick hunting trip out in the woods to try out some 22 cal. JSB 15.89 gr Hades Hunting pellets that SteveP-52 had given me.
At around 5:30 pm I spotted a Red Squirrel close to a White Oak tree that was feeding on the ground. He also spotted me and took off up the tree. He paused for a moment and I took a quick off-hand shot at he Red. I heard what sounded like the meat slap of a pellet hit and then he was off again. He went up the tree about 40 feet then fell back down to the base of the tree dead. At first I thought I had missed the shot and did not know that I had hit him until he fell to earth again. I have another post in the Air Rifle review gate on the 22 Cal Crosman Summit Ranger NP2 Rifle that I was hunting with today. The whole point of todays hunt was to test out the Hades pellets for that review.
The shot was a standing off-hand shot at about 18 to 22 yards. The angle was almost straight on and dead ahead of me. It was windy with the 15 Mph wind blowing from the south west to the north east. The temp was around 44 F.  The altitude here is at 900 FT above sea level.

So with Mission Accomplished.... I took some pictures and headed home.

Best Wishes My Friends  -  Tom

Nice shot Tom, that rodent was dead and didn't even realize it. I keep hearing good things about the Hades, waiting for the .25 cal flavor.

Wow Tom,

Lol, you could’nt have hit more center shot on it’s back. Good shooting! Looks like it held a pretty straight line on exit too. 8)

Tom definitely has a steady hand, and he knows each of his air rifles,  and the pellets that work best. Very knowledgeable airgun hunter.

Hi Dan !

I suspect that the maximum performance of the Hades pellet would be best shown with a PCP.

I am thinking the the Summit Ranger is a little under powered for this particular pellet.

The pellet seems to be a rather hard lead mixture.

Thank you for your reply & complement.

Hi Buddy !

I am thinking that these pellets would be a good choice for larger Raccoon sized small game.

Also...They may preform best out of a PCP, with more power than the Summit Ranger has.

I can't tell from just this one small Red squirrel.  The pellet pretty much just blew right thru it.

Thank you for your reply & complement.

NHi Steve !

That would be great.... if JSB started making the Hades in 25 cal.

The squirrel went high in the tree top before he died. When he expired though...it was stone cold dead.

Thank you for your reply & complement.

Hi Buddy !

Yep..I caught him smack dab in the center of his back.  The exit wound, lined up fairly straight too.

Thank you for your reply & complement.

Hi Kerry !

Forest hunting an shooting is what I do.  I don't shoot from a bench as that would not help me out hunting.

If I sit down, it is usually on a log.  If I have a supported shot it is usually a tree branch or tree trunk.

Sometimes off-hand shots are all that I get offered but I much prefer a supported shot if I can get one.

Thank you for your reply & complement.

Hi Dan !

This early spring I had upwards of sixteen air guns.
It was starting to get harder to keep up with what went with what and how far it would be accurate.
I have now paired my guns down to a more realistic number of 8.
I sold or gave away 8 guns that I actually liked..but was not using enough to justify keeping them.
My problem is..... I can always find a way to justify another gun.

Thank you for the praise & reply.
I am just one of many hunters here in the GTA.
I do OK.... but Some are Far... better hunters than I.

Title: Up-Date on the Summit Ranger - JSB Hades Pellets *Graphic Picture*
Post by: A.K.A. Tommy Boy on October 26, 2019, 07:23:43 PM
I managed to get out today and harvest a nice male Gray Squirrel with the Summit Ranger Shooting the 22 cal 15.89 gr. JSB Hades Hunting pellet.  The shot was a quartering away shot from about 25 yards. The pellet entered mid body on the right side just behind the rib cage and passed thru the heart lung area. It broke thru the left shoulder joint bones and rib cage bones and came to a stop just under the skin of the left shoulder. The skin was what stopped the pellet and it almost was a pass thru shot...but not quite. The pellet traveled thru 3 1/2 inches of flesh, internal organs and bone.  I measured this carefully with a tape measure to be exact.

I removed the pellet for your examination. It was almost a pristine pellet with very little deformation.
I am thinking that the Summit Ranger is somewhat under powered to maximize this pellet's expansion capabilities.
In my opinion this is a good hunting pellet. I think it would expand better in a higher powered gun....maybe like a PCP.....or at least one with more power than what the Summit Ranger produces.

Best Wishes - Tom

Here is the pellet that I recovered today.  Click the picture to enlarge the image.

Good morning, Tom.  I am a little late to the party and still stuck on that first post.  You wrote "off-hand shot" a couple of times.  I am thinking you made a typographical error, because seasoned hunters like us can't shoot off hand with any success.  [Just joking.]  Excellent shooting on a rather small target.

You may be right Matt.

The pellet did break thru the bones in the ribcage and shoulder joint though.

Maybe I should try again...... this time with a head shot.
