Title: FT positions
Post by: prosportfan on September 27, 2019, 03:18:07 PM
For the few who may know of me when competing in field target I participate in hunter class with shooting sticks.  When I was at DCFS in southeast Pennsylvania I met some new friends, particularly a guy by the name JD from Tennessee. He and Brian Van Liew (again Brian some if I messed up your last name) suggested that I should shoot open class piston. Now from what I know, open class you cannot use shooting sticks but can use a harness and a rifle 20ft/lbs or less. I have been trying the field target sitting positions and am having THE hardest times keeping steady. I feel like I have a hard time breathing and controlling my breathing. I have been trying different hand and rifle placements like placing the rifle across my left arm and my left hand is grabbing my right forearm while sitting (hope that makes sense). Also I seen Leo Gonzalez, Mike Norris and Hector Medina sit on the ground placing their rifle on their knee pad.

Well my whole issue is aside from practicing what hold/position for a spring rifle is best? I have a prosport with no type of attachment or aftermarket parts on the stock. Any and all help is and will be greatly appreciated.

When I first started shooting field target decades ago I tried to shoot "pretzel style" instead of the offhand class I was shooting and it was horrible for me!

During one DIFTA airgun match I was squadded with one of the better "open class" shooters so I asked how long it took him to master his "shooting sit". I was a bit taken back when I was told "2 years of steady shooting before I felt comfortable and shot consistently"!

LOL....for a West Virginia squirrel that only shot field target to get some off season practice I gave up on even trying "pretzel style" shooting, however it does seen that those all strapped up like a trussed turkey have a very steady shooting position!

I use a pretzel style with a harness for Open Springer. That said, I don't practice nearly enough. I think the biggest game changer would be losing 20 lbs and spending a bit more time focusing on my breathing and flexibility...so, yoga.

Ed I quickly made a "bumbag" out of some throw pillows and I sat the rifle on my knee the exact spot where it would sit in my sticks and I still had trouble breathing and keeping steady. Same as with the rifle in the crook of my left arm. I was thinking that the place where the rifle sits in the sticks was let's say taller via hamster or a super thick knee pad which in my opinion would alleviate some of my breathing issue. Who knows. I also feel that I'll probably will have to move my scope back further as well

Is there a Stand Only shooting match without improvisation?

The other problem with air rifles (break barrels or lever) is being in the right safe position to reload QUICKLY and that is standing room only.
