Title: Diana 52 .22 first impressions
Post by: stevemag on September 23, 2019, 04:03:50 PM
I got the Diana 52 from AOA when it was on sale a few weeks ago.$330ish delivered.
the printed crony reading included was around 775fps with 14.66 FTTs, thats a little under 20 fpe.
The gun looks like you would expect from a good german gun. Its pretty muzzle heavy.
pretty easy to cock, sounds a little ...springy? if that says anything. although the side lever took a little getting used too. i found myself getting ready to break the barrel a couple times while shooting.
I t06 trigger feels good , just a tiny( and i mean tiny) bit spongy. but very predictable. i did not adjust it at all.
The gun is much louder than my hw95 but that is to be expected i guess.
The shot cycle is longer than the hw95 and feels like a matchlock compared to the BSA gas ram i have . but still VERY shootable. i would say 2nd best airgun i have bought...so far. i does have  a little bit of a BUZZ but not nearly an much as my hw95 had. i could live with this.
My eyes dont see iron sights so well but i managed ok with these. I did have to crank them all the way to the right, not sure if thats me or the gun.
tried shooting groups at 25 yards but with out a scope i didnt see the point. In general it seems to hit where i was aiming so i set up some plastic golfballs at 50 yards.
from a bench with my palm up on a bag and the gun resting on my palm.no rear bag. FTT 14.66 pellets
i took aim at what appeared to be tiny white specks on top of a blurry front post and i'll be darned if i wasn't sending those golf balls flying 50% of the time. i dont know by how much i misses by  the other half of the time.
it sure made me smile when the balls went flying. This gun is gonna be nice when scoped.
all in all i think its a winner and makes me want to thin out the herd some.
i was thinking of mounting a hawk sport hd 2-7x32 like the one on the 95, that one has held up for a few thousand shots. any scope and mount advice are welcome.

I got in on the same deal, put a UTG 3X12 on it. So far, mine likes the AA 16gr the best. We got $300 worth imho   ;)

I took the scope off of my D52 (R1 too).
I like irons sights and peeps.
You guys will find you need one of these for your rifles:

Nice mini-review!

I bought one of these $300 Diana 52's as well (I mean, it was pretty hard not to, right?), but have not put it through its paces yet. Good to know what I might expect!

Thanks!

i bought a peep site years ago for a diana but it wouldn't  fit on the scope rail. it was curved  not flat.  i gave it away to someone here. this is the one. i would love to find one like this that fits

Williams FP-AG with  target knobs..

PA has one similar..
They have this one too..
You can get without knobs, too.

A droop-compensated mount was suggested.  It is not necessary.  My 48 has no droop.  The 48/52 models rarely have barrel droop, unlike the 34 and 350 which are break barrels.  The 48 and 52 have fixed barrels.

I use the 6-screw 1-piece BKL 260 series scope mounts on all my Springers and never had any issues with POI shifts or anything moving.  They also have the 260D4 and 260D7 to compensate for some droop (.004" / 0.007").  I use the BKL 260D7 on the break-barrels.  For me the BKL 1-piece 6 screw mounts are the best for spring guns.  Have been using them for 12.5 years without a single problem, and that includes 2 Diana 350's.

Steve, 19.5-20fpe is what it should be shooting so you are right in that range.  Most 48/52's shoot really well with the JSB 15.89gr (same as AA 16gr), so give the JSB's a try if you haven't already.  Should be shooting them around 750fps after a few hundred shots when the gun is broken in.

“rarely” Indicates they do sometimes “droop”.....

But the muzzle is 3/4” below the scope rail without the rings.
A natural droop..
If a droop mount is not needed, fine.
I believe I said “You MAY need one of these”.

I’m gonna mount an old scope with a one piece mount just to see what she is capable of. I found another Williams sight I had laying around in the old parts box. it helped sharpen the front sight a bit but not a lot. Unfortunately I am now too busy with work so it may be a couple weeks till I get to the range. ( 1 1/2 hours away)

Well, shot today at 25 and 50 yards. A little breezy. But not much really.  Looking through a scope (old Gamo 3-9x40 non AO) seemed to let my other senses notice more, the trigger that seemed slightly spongy at first felt very long today at the bench. And the buzz seems to be louder than I first noticed as well. At 25 yards I did ok. About 3/4 inch to 1/2 inch groups with ftt 5.53s. At 50 I was up to 3” groups easy.   Although the scope was blurry at 50 yards.  I still have to decide if it’s worth scoping this gun. With open sights I can hit aspirin at 8 yards or so .i was hoping it would do better at longer ranges but I still need much more practice with it.

Steve, since I took the scope off of my D52, I can’t seem to put it down.
It was very unwieldy with the large scope..
Very user friendly with the open sights...IMHO

I was just shooting a plastic golf ball  floating on the lake after I took the scope off. Off hand at 25 yards or so and hitting it quite a few times. Didn’t notice the buzz or the trigger, just had fun.
Funny I think the scope makes my flinch a little, or maybe a lack of follow through because of the bouncing site picture, not sure why but it almost seems like I shoot it better with out a scope on it.

Steve,
That style of peep sight you had that you gave away is intended to be filed to fit.
Williams deliberately makes them a bit small with the intention that the end consumer can file them wider to make them fit.
The curvature shouldn't matter; at least, I found that it didn't matter when I installed one on a flat top dovetail.

I purchased a used Diane 52 which has the T01 trigger, so that gives you an idea of it’s age. Rifle is very smooth & accurate & shows a preference for JSB .22 jumbo 14gr pellets. $300.00 for a new rifle is a great deal as I purchased a scoped used 52 for $275.00 & the T01 for $200.00.

Haven’t decided yet how to improve my sight picture .  I put an old peep site on just for kicks and it didn’t seem to sharpen my sights up much. Spent all my fun money on gifts for others this Christmas so a scope purchase will have to wait. Besides, between work and weather I haven’t fired a shot in 2 months.

Have said it and will say it again. Get a Vortek pg2. Shot cycle will get super short, no noises from the spring, less recoil, more accurate. Thats the best thing you can do to the rifle. 48/52s can be worked on without spring compressor.

My .177 takes eggs at 70+ yards. Everything below 50yards is no challenge. Have been shooting the stems of wineglasses at 40-50 yards.

Good scope for the money is Hawke vantage A0. Worked on my 48 since 2017.

I had the unique opportunity to use a 3x32 scope on my .22 d48.  It really was a sweet combination.  I really did like the reticle on the Sightmark!  I did a write-up for Hector here on it:

https://www.ctcustomairguns.com/hectors-airgun-blog/how-can-less-be-more (https://www.ctcustomairguns.com/hectors-airgun-blog/how-can-less-be-more)

Don't underestimate how fun and practical a low-powered scope can be!

Recently got back my AOA 52 that Motorhead tuned/slowed down and now have about 100 pellets thru it. I've already decided the scope I have on it is not worthy of the 52s accuracy, I have several Hawke 30MMs I might try. Agree with Steve, $$ well spent.
