Saw last night that AL made the 257420 BBT HP mold and is currently for sale.I have been waiting for this day!!!
-
Nice! Post some groups when you get to shoot those BTs.

Sorry but , the only thing that this bullet has in common with the Lyman 257420 is that they are cast bullets . I love the quality of NOE’s bullet molds and own more of their molds than any other . I’d say this is closer to the .253 BBT and stretched out the mid section rather than being a 257420 clone .
-
I agree and nothing on the NOE website indicates it is Lyman copy. To me is is simply a mid weight 257 hollow point, worth giving it a try.
-
On the bottom left corner it says 257420.They have been working on this design for awhile

I don't get it? This is Bob's BT version. With HP on small metplat. Lyman 257420 is quite different looking bullet.

Can't see anything same on these models.

It shares dimensions with the BT version of 257420 http://arsenalmolds.com/bullet-molds/257-Bullet-boattail (http://arsenalmolds.com/bullet-molds/257-Bullet-boattail) It's basically the same bullet without the driveband in the middle.

Well I’ve been corrected . It was modeled after the 257420 in diameter , length and nose profile ( but not identical) . Someone will have to try before I buy this one . Like I need another .257 mold . I’ve got a collection of four molds now with nearly 5000 bullets cast and that’s only in .257 . There are a lot more in .22 , 223 and 225 .

You should note that the mold is .258, may be too small for your barrel?

If you buy your mold from Arsenal then you can change diameter. As i did and ordered that 420 mold on .260 diameter. I thought you already know that Riku... Well on my opinion it is not same... There is no same amout driving bands and grease grooves. But hey you can always try if it works as good as that Arsenal version do.

Actually I think I'll buy Arsenal's 388 or 420 BT mold in 260 size. I'll just have to do some more accuracy testing to decide which one, now that I got my loading problems with 388 bullets sorted. Hopefully after our silhouette competition.

I ordered one on Monday hopefully it shoots well. I should have time to hit the range hopefully by Tuesday or Thursday next week. Ill be comparing it to the noe 65gr and arsenal 420.

Mold arrived today. Cast a few and sized some to .257. Dropping at 72 grains in pure lead.
Shot out of my Texan at 1080 FPS 185 FPE (I have it adjusted for heavier bullets right now, so it is a little hot).
Target was 10 rounds indoors at 15 yards. That is VERY promising from my experience.
The clay is some FIRM industrial modeling clay that is not easy to work unless warmed, but it is what I had to catch an expanding bullet.

Loren, nice bullets . I really like the RG pins in the NOE molds and by the looks of the leftover lead the HP is working real well . Keep us posted when you get out to range with this one . I’m in need of an HP .257 bullet . If this performa as well as the original ,I won’t have a choice but to get one .
-
i would love to see a 388 mold in the RG2 style.awesome round in my 257 Escape/Tj drop in and doug valve.
-
This is an interesting take on the 420. However, it is not a short range bullet. It will be telling to see 100+ yard results!
Keep us posted. 8)

Nice, what size do they drop from the mold?
-
Mine are measuring .2594 - .2601 at the driving bands. "Pure" lead and running lead and mold hot. Measured with Mitutoyo mic good to 0.00005"
-
Im getting .2587 with a 1 % tin.May try a 3% tin to make them just a touch harder.Shot one into a water jug and it turned the bullet inside out.

This bullet is as close as I could draw it to the original dimensions of the Lyman 257420, with the following changes:
1. I used a boattail base, starting at the same diameter as the front of the gas check stub, and tapered like the Arsenal version....
2. I changed the lube groove center section to a smooth cylinder, just small enough to miss the lands (ie 0.248"), like my BBTs….
3. The overall length was reduced 0.005" to make it fit one of the mags. mentioned during the development threads, which everyone had lots of opportunity to view and comment in....

4. Most importantly, Al used the new thin RG pins so that all cavities are HP, but there are optional pins to cast a flat nose or cup point.... There are no HP moulds available anywhere else, that I am aware of, without sending the mould out to have them added at extra expense.... Are these bullets identical to the 257420?.... No.... They are a 257420 BT HP design, and hopefully the changes made will increase the BC....
NOTE: Al has also made a shortened version available, with the boattail removed.... (like removing the gas check shank on a 257420)….

This is also made in the RG2 and RG4 moulds, and is 63 gr. as a FN and 60 gr. as a HP....

What is the overall length? And Bob what mag are you talking about that it will fit in? Forgive me, I wasn’t paying attention to that thread as I had no 257 at the time.
-
No problem Bob.Im really liking this round, seems to be real accurate and better speed then the 420,Im guessing less drag with the bands??
-
Denis requested it be just under 0.6" to fit a mag. he had.... I don't know what it was for.... Since that is only 0.005" shorter than the Lyman (and only 0.001" shorter than the Arsenal version)…. I made that change.... The LOA is 0.599"....
Yes, at the same diameter, this bullet should have slightly less bore drag than the 257420.... It eliminates the extra drive band of the Lyman design, and gets rid of the two deep lube grooves.... by instead having the entire midbody just clear the lands.... Getting rid of the deep grooves should provide less disruption to the airflow (less drag) as well.... at least that is the theory, and why I use that on all my designs.... since we don't need those grooves to hold the thick, waxy/greasy lube used in PBs....

I got to shoot my .257 Texan yesterday at 102 yards, and I got the best groups from the hollow point 258-75-FN-BQ6.

Excellent!!! Any idea how fast they were traveling?

Unfortunately I did not have my chrony with me. I did turn up the power wheel one full revolution from it’s normal Approximate 1/4 power setting. I guesstimate the FPS to be in high 900’s.
