Title: 217-17-WC Pellets look promising IMO
Post by: Wayne52 on September 21, 2019, 05:12:44 PM
Early this morning I cast up some pellets with another new mold from NOE and I consider them to be very promising.  For being my first run of them they seem to be doing really good from my favorite Crosman 150.  I did have 56 rejects and 260 keepers.  The average weight of the lightest ones in my case is 16.4 grains but I'm sure that'll change once the mold has been seasoned a little more.  It's been my experience so far that most all the molds I've cast with will change some after using a few times and the average weight of the pellets will increase a little.  I will be smelting some more lead for another run this evening and probably do run #2 on the mold tomorrow morning.

I managed to get bout 50 cast before my spout stopped flowing. Still hairy pellets some of them. Shot 7 or 8 @ 840 they didn't like that. Turned the speed down to 630 very promising, destroying pecans at 15 yards dead on.
Cast using recycled pellets.

Wayne, very nice creative video with a good choice of music and great shooting. Those wad cutters look promising.

Thanks Michael and Bob !!!  Michael I never use anything but pure lead because my caster is too warm for anything but pure lead, I've tried a tin mix with it but I started getting hairy pellets so I went back to pure lead and have been ever since.  One of these days I'll break down and buy a thermostatically controlled caster (not bottom pour either) and try pressure pouring a 1% tin mix that way to see if the hairy pellet syndrome will go away.

Those look great Wayne I'm still waffling over the hunter mold or the WC mold right now.

Matt if I was in your position I'd go for the 217-20-RF, you'd have the best of both worlds (pistol&rifle) to start.  That doesn't mean the wad cutter mold isn't any good though.  I just did a second run of the wad cutters this morning, the skirts on the wad cutters aren't filling on some of them (probably 15% of the cast) but I'm getting a little heavier pellets since the last run, I also tested them in my pistol and they're shooting really good.  I think I'll also shoot a couple over the chrony to see what they're doing on hi and low power.

Thats why I haven't bought yet both would be used but the 217-20 probably more so. I am interested in how they do over the crony and in the long run.

Wayne, nice shooting, the 150 and the wad cutters are a nice combination. It looks like I will be adding another mold to my wish list. Yesterday I received the 217-20 so tonight I will do some casting and testing.

Thanks Bob !!! I'm happy with how the WC's are performing and casting so far, I think after a couple more casting sessions it'll get better yet, I give the mold a good cleaning before I do my next casting session with them.  I need to make more hollow point slugs and more of the 217 hunters too, I'm starting to run a little low on both of those now.

Looking good, by any chance have you run those pellets over a chrono, short/long bbl's, just curious?  8)

I am just about ready to push the button for that mold, would fit with all my other molds in 22 calibers.

Thanks's,
Don

Don I just did a 5 shot test of each and warm are the numbers that I used.

Crosman 150 - 450fps   Airmax Master Blaster - 550fps
