Title: Anyone casting .172?
Post by: Blutroop on September 14, 2019, 12:55:14 AM
So I got the .172 itch. I’ve had it for a few years now. I even got a few pb in .172. I have acquired everything to start a build in .172 but have run into hard times. I lost my job and still need to build a structure to winter over my family in. I was planning on getting everything needed to cast my own at least in .172 and .257 but can not afford to buy everything right now. I do have lots of disco and marauder .25 parts to trade and a gen1 and 2 Jsar valve. Would anyone set up in this caliber be talked into casting a handful for me?

He is a great guy but not doing .172 yet. You must be thinking of his .177 stuff? I can’t find any 177 barrels with a fast twist.

Do you own a mold?  If so, give D-rig a shout.  He may be able to help you out!

I do not own any molds yet. If I had a mold I’m sure I could scrounge everything else I would need. Old cast iron skillets are at most garage sales up here and I could always build a fire to melt lead. Might be a lot longer learning curve learning to control heat on a fire but I will have plenty time and weather to enjoy working around a warm fire and would like to be as self sufficient as possible. (One of the main reasons I got back into air rifles)

Those are tough rounds to cast from what I've seen, The base of the slug
always seamed to get smashed to one side and were lopsided  when I tried
to cast some of those .

I hope I'm not to late for this party , Hey Jeremy I can probably help you with some .172" ammo .

As I'm not a paid sponsor I can not sell you ammo on this open forum but I think I can give you ammo
for free , I do make some .172" in swage and in hand cast below is a pic of the 26 grain hand cast
and some 24 grain swage that has a boat tail and a fairly good size hollow point .

All I ask is that you cover the shipping costs and we will get you some lead sent your way .

Yes. I got a bunch of swaged and cast .172 slugs. And now I’m running into unexpected hurtles I’m putting my rifle together. Everything takes longer with hand tools. They look great though. I’ll post as soon as I shoot em

Just cut my breech oring seal. Still got to drill my barrel transfer port, make a loading tray, and put it together.

cedric, (tofazfou) Swears by the .172 that looks like a gascheck 257420 in .172

I tried to post the link to the mold, but NOE isn't coming up at the moment.

Wish I had the time and resources to get into pouring my own.  Seems a bit time consuming to me though.

It'd be nice to find a place where I could get a drop-in .172 air rifle barrel and just order tins of those sweet shooting .172 rounds that Cedric (tofazfou) swears by.

I predict we will see this start to happen within a year from now.

Kind of!
I cast for the 17Hornady Hornet center fire (next to a 45 ACP).

Great up to @ MACK 1.5 then they start to scatter.

Got to use a end mill and do my transfer port today! It’s amazing how quick and easy this stuff is once you get access to the right equipment. Hopefully I’ll be able to turn my bolt down tomorrow and be able to fire it this weekend!

I’m going to be fitting a TJ’s barrel to my Impact X shortly . I don’t have a mold yet as I’ve recently been taken by the HW series of spring rifles . The money I was going to spend on a mold is gone now.
My plan is to shoot the Flat base NOE at 950 fps . Would be nice to find some pre cast 172 bulls for testing .

Got my prod/disco double together and was able to take a shot yesterday. The 26 gr slug went through 6” of styrofoam insulation, 2 layers of cardboard and then fully embedded into a wooden TV tray I grabbed as a backstop. The base of the bullet was a 8th” below the surface and still round. I hope to shoot it over a chrono later today and access accuracy.
