got to break out the Remote Control Mrod for a new Patio Rattus, it won't go to the all night buffet feed station outside and it thinks it's safe in the patio, well that's a bad decision, it ate a potato and some left over PB in the bait box, so it's going to have more tonight, no video yet, but I will setup the video camera tonight and hopefully put a .22 JSB in it...... stay tuned.......
-
look at this Big male Rattus in the Patio, I forgot to put the alarm on a higher setting to wake me up so I slept through the time the Rattus was in the Patio :o :o :o Doh...
oh well, He'll be back tonight, I reset all the parameters for the camera and security video and I should get him tonight....
Big Patio Rattus

That is a very interesting setup you have there! Nice job!
-
LOL Kevin! That is a big boy and he will back and you will get him tonight! 🤓👍
-
Can you aim with it or just pull the trigger?
-
Can you aim with it or just pull the trigger?
aimed at a stationary point, the remote control only pulls the trigger, since I have the bait box up against the plywood, the Rats tend to go up against the plywood too, there's a mark on the wood for point of aim and when the Rat gets in front of the mark, I flip the switch on the radio transmitter and the servo pulls the rope on the trigger, Pop goes the Rattus..... ;D ;D ;D
-
That is a very interesting setup you have there! Nice job!
thank Rhett, it's actually a very simple setup, 1 channel, I'm use to setting up 6 to 8 channels for Airplanes and Gliders so setting up a remote control pellet gun was easy, all it has to do is one thing..... pull the trigger... dead Rattus :o ;D
-
LOL Kevin! That is a big boy and he will back and you will get him tonight! 🤓👍
Hey Randall, I'm hoping I can wake up when the motion detector alarm goes off, I really don't want this big Rat in the Patio, it's making a huge mess every time, Rat Poop all over the place, Blah.

Kevin, I hear ya man! These are the reason I got into airguns! One got in my house made a huge mess EVERYWHERE (the diseases they carry scare me) and one got in the garage and tore into some exotic critters cages! Get’em GET’em!
-
the Rattus showed up and I took the shot and somehow "Missed", This is one Lucky Rattus, I checked to POI on the backstop and it was very low than what the test shot was, some how the gun shot low, there might be the possibility that the Rattus had been on the gun snooping around and knocked it to a lower POI? any how I reset it last night but the Rattus never came back, maybe tonight will be the Ringer, 3rd time is a Charm, Right?

Whoa! I am impressed with your setup. I’d forgotten all about the remote control set up. This is so cool!

Wiley Coyote level genius my friend! You should have an ACME Rat Buffett sign on the box....
-
What's the odds on Kevin tonight.............
10 to 1............... ;) ;D
I'll be tuning in to see the X'd out Patio RAT........... TU DRT...........
Tia,
Don
-
One very lucky male rattus! But, his luck runs out...TONITE! 😉👍
-
Ranchibi
I keep checking about every hour, to see THE ROBO RAT EXTERMINATOR IN OPERATION,
and see A Patio Ratus doing the Funky Chicken Disco etc. LoL ;D
Tia,
Don
-
Well it didn't happen last night, there was a scheduled power outage from 11 pm to 5:30 am in my neighborhood so they could upgrade the transformers, so I didn't have power for the camera and monitor, so I will try again tonight, this rat is getting all the luck in the world right now, but that's gonna run out soon.

Ooh! Can’t wait for your POST!
-
I'll be checking in every hour or so........... ;)
Tia,
Don
-
Well Don your gonna have to wait till tonight, this Rattus is Smarter than your average Rattus, it didn't show up til 6:03 am this morning, 50 minutes ago.... and it was very wary of the bait box, I had all sorts of goodies in the box, PB, chocolate chip cookie, Potato, but it just sniffed from a distance and then left, it never got into the kill zone, but I'm patient, and I will get this Rattus, I'm going to study the video footage and I might site in the R/C Mrod to a point where the Rattus likes to sit while sniffing from a distance, I think this might be the best answer to catching a Smart Rattus, BTW, I have a Crosman 1077 coming today that I'm going to make a dedicated Remote Control Rattus eliminator out of, Semi Auto for quick back up in case more than one Rattus shows up......
-
There’s something up with the Rattus visit at 6:03. I have a new Rattus coming by and Arlo shows it’s last visit was 6:16 which is very late. I wonder if it’s moon and weather related. Was hot yesterday and took a long time to cool down last night.
Can’t wait to see the remote shot!
-
Geez....I had one come @ 4:20am this morning! H’mmm...weird....
-
Do you have any quiet servos to help with some aim correction? I was going to offer a 6 channel rx/tx combo, as I no longer fly, very cheap but it sounds you are more than set up for it.
-

I've got gobbs of servos and receivers all 2.4Ghz DSMX/DSM2 and I have 2- JR X9503 9 channel TX's, 1 Spectrum DX8 8chasnnel TX and a Spectrum DX6i 6channel TX, so I think I'm good, I want to keep it simple, 1 channel means the battery will last all night, I've got a 2700mah 3cell lipo on the gun and a 2650mah tx lipo pack in the TX, this particular Rattus seems a bit smarter than the rest, but it will succumb to the bait box and the Yummy goodies inside....... just gotta give it time, besides it's Friday the 13th and it's luck has just ran out, I just named my Mrod "Jason"...... 8) :o :o

they must be on morning shift or they are Vampire Rats...... just before sunrise, last meal before bed....
-
Getting the popcorn ready.
-
Another Miss :o :o :o :o :-\ :'(, it heard the servo and pulled back just in time, tonight I'm going to take a break and let the Rattus calm down, me too, and I'm going to buy a lottery ticket for him, ;D, this Rattus is so lucky he would win....... well try try again..... keep watching this Rat channel.
-
Kevin, take him with you to get the lotto ticket! That definitely is the luckiest rattus of all time!
-
I feel like Wile, E Coyote fighting with a ACME product trying to catch the Roadrunner...... :o :o :o I better keep an eye to the sky, watch for falling boulders......an Anvils... ;D
-
I know I am late for the party on this topic. I was watching the first miss video a few times. I never do see a pellet impact, and the gun sort of sounded like there was nothing in it.
-
These rattus are not easy targets to hit! You’ll get’em Kevin, I have faith in YOU! 😉👍
-
lol it will happen rats are greedy.
-
Looks like Rattus decided to take the Night off too.... no alarm from the security camera, all video is from the security camera, just to let you know the setup on the gun is my DYI night vision, it doesn't record, the distance is to close for it anyway, I'm going to change to POI to a spot the Rattus likes to sniff from, about 3 inches from the original spot, we'll see if that works better...... :o ... I'll try again tonight and I'll spike some PB on the backstop to help entice it in the Kill Zone.
-
Kevin, not only is that a lucky rattus...it’s a smart one too! A battle to easily won is to easily forgotten!
-
OK got some video of the Rattus last night, he never got into the POI kill area but it gives me a good Idea where to re-aim the POI kill zone, look how Skittish He is and how long it took for him to work up the courage just to get to the backstop board.

When I read the Subject of this topic I had visions of a remote controlled fully automatic air rifle with motion sensors and an automatic target acquisition system like you see in the movies when they want to protect the perimeter from the enemy, loins or dinosaurs! LOL! Sounds like you probably have the equipment available to at least be able to adjust aim if needed. Not sure how complicated that would be... Wouldn't be nice if there was such a set-up for air guns! LOL! I have really enjoyed your videos! Persistence will pay off and I look forward to seeing Mr Rattus remotely dispatched!

I thought about that, but it would make too much noise also it would be very expensive to make, I just want to keep it simple and cost effective, let the Rattus come to you Right? it will get to the Killzone soon, a few minor adjustments and the Rattus will be History, I've got time and that Rattus is getting very Hungry..... soon enough hunger will overcome fear.... ;D ;D ;D :o
-
Geez Kevin...that is one smart male rattus! Have you tried offering him a sliver of apple in the bait house? I’ve found apple works better than any other food, even PB.
-
You will get him.
-
Good grief that is one skittish rat! :o
He’s definitely a smart one, but.... not smart enough to stay away.
I think it’s just a matter of time ;)
-
I'm a sucker for apples with PB ???
-
He is sure good at the low crawl :P

FWIW, IMHO,
That Ratus is VERY scared of that bait box, I went back to the video (where you miss it) and replayed it several of times,
I CANNOT see where a pellet hit the backstop or floor etc, Rat jumped/reacted I believe to/from the sound only was the clip loaded.................. ;)
Have you changed ANYTHING on that bait box or around it? Did you spill or clean up in that area with anything?
Sorry for the questions, attempting to figure out why it is spooked around that area.......
FWIW,
I would lay out a faint caulk grid lines, to see where that Ratus moves to and from etc, best area to ambush it.
If you don't kill it and miss, then it's really going to be hard to program etc, best to study and do some careful programming/planning etc.
Maybe change out that bait box, with a fresh one, wear rubber gloves when handling etc,
and put out a different types of bait, a big pill box with the sections, and see which bait it prefers,
cat food, PB, dog food, sunflower seed, bird feed etc.
Do you have any outside critters you feed? If so, use that feed also.
Just fill the sections and place it about have way down your backstop, and do so filming to see the results etc.
I have really taken an interest to get that RAT KILLED,
As a professional DFA (Govt Hunter/Trapper),
I worked for 9 months+ straight putting a set of handcuffs on a VERY SMART Yeller dog,
that was killing 3 lambs a night, when I finally caught it, I found it had been in a trap at least 3 times,
was missing 2 feet (cross hobbled) and had the center 2 toes pulled out on the good other front foot etc.
It was documented that this yeller dog had been thru 7+ other trappers, attempting to catch it,
in the 5 yrs it lived on the one ranch, needles to say it, HAD a college education and PHD,
when it came to traps and trappers etc.
Thanks,
Don

Hey Don, yes the rifle was loaded and yes the pellet did hit the backstop, you can not see it in the video, but the first pellet on the first miss video went under the Rats neck, it was embedded in the backstop about 1/2" from the floor, the second miss in the second video was the Rat hearing the servo and with it's lightning fast reflexes was able to pull back enough to avoid the pellet, since then it has associated the box and the food with the noise and the pellet wizzing by it, smart Rat, but not so smart that it keeps coming back, last night I let it have the fresh PB that I spread on the Backstop to get it calmed down and less skittish, I'm going to try to get it again tonight, I reset my POI to the left end of the backstop where the Rat seems to be more comfortable, I will get it...... ;D ;D ;D

Oooh....Kevin...that was brilliant of you to let the rattus eat in peace last night! Tonight it will meet fate...delivered by MRod servo! YES! 😉

Thanks Kevin
I'll be watching for the video................ ;)

Mr R. is 100% on to your illumination's focal point perimeter. A diffuser is in order for sure. He even skirts where it's or the floor. I wonder if they see or feel the warmth if it's IR? But he is working that edge for certain.
-
popping more popcorn!

popping more popcorn!
LOL Warren, I hope you’re making LOTS of that delicious popcorn as there are many of us posting up here! LOL 😂!

I think they can see something of the ir. Maybe they dont see it as light just see it as another color. Then again maybe he is awe of the holy peanut butter with the halo around it. :P
I too am munching on popcorn waiting for the end of the story.
-
Lol, i’m Locked on to this thread for sure... suspense is killing me :o.
I think i’ll Celebrate when you finally get this one by going out and buying a new 880 :D
Hey, any excuse will do for a new airgun right? ;)
-
Kevin
After looking at all 3 videos, the first 2 have a smaller lite area, and the bright spot is higher on the back stop,
the last video has the whole area more brightly lit and the main spot area is more to the left on the back stop/flooring etc.
Any possibility of moving the main bright spot area, higher and to the right, with just the bottom edge,
just barely lighting the bait box entrance etc.
Can you cover IR with a red filter?
Tia,
Don

sorry Don but it's built in to the security camera, can't change the IR position, there are 2 cameras in the patio so 1 is on the main security system and it over looks the whole Patio, the other is a wireless defender camera mounted on a small 2x4 that I move around to give the best picture of the Backstop and bait area as close in line with the gun as possible, so you will see IR from the other camera as dimmer light around the outer side areas, and as of last night the Rat didn't show, we had Termite spray done, so he might not like the smell of the Orange oil, I have just the camera on tonight since I didn't have time to charge the Batteries for the gun and radio today, got back home later than expected, I'm going to see if the Rat comes back and then I will try again......
-
This Rattus has a Guardian Angel or something watching out for it, I missed again, it was perfectly in the killzone, I took the shot, and it went under it.....? after the shot I went out to see how I missed, I looked at the backstop but couldn't see where it hit, I went back to the video and I could see at the bottom of the backstop under the board where the pellet hit and went into the floor, I checked the aim on the gun and it was now low and to the right from where I originally set it with two test shots and rechecking through the scope, here's the video of the miss #3 and here's a picture of the test shots and the miss shot...... Luckiest Rat in the world...???????
https://youtu.be/xcsLPZsnNgY
-
LOL Kevin! I think you’re right..that freaking rattus has a guardian angel of some sort! That was unexplained phenomena....Twilight Zone like! Now whatcha gonna do...inquiring minds want to know....😉. This is one very fun thread ya got going!
-
"Oh Snackbar" Kevin >:(
I can't believe it, :o
I can't keep missing my Beauty Sleep, I am starting to get very Ugly, LoL.
There has to be a reason you are shooting low, something is loose or not tightened down properly,
losing air in the rifle, causing a low hit, somethings moving when you are pulling the trigger,
with your servo device, can your auto trigger device be moving something,
and causing the low hits, action/rifle moving in it's holder, Tripod legs tight?
You can't keep missing, or you'll have a PHD trained Rattus to deal with, and then you'll have your hands full..........
Come on, we are all pulling for you, you can do it, remember 1S1K .................
ps,
put some peanut butter at the top of your cross, make the rat stretch out to get it, then you have the full length to make a hit with etc.
Tia,
Don

Aghhhhhhhhhhh!!! LOL.

At this point I think he deserves a cage full bowl of food water and a wheel to run on. Ether way he will be removed from the gene pool.
-
I had a rat issue a short while ago. I had a rat that was chewing a hole in my deer corn bag overnight. I taped the hole up with some duct tape and it chewed a new hole beside the tape. I left that new hole and placed an empty rat trap under that hole, which was about four inches up on the bag. I figured he would have to step on the trap while accessing the hole. BAAM, got him, Yippee ;)
P.S. I'm running out of popcorn here, and am starting to applaud for the rat... :o
-
Keith
OUCH!!!................That's going to leave a mark.......... favoring the RAT :o ;)
We got to give Kevin at least 1 more try, he's been working so hard ATTEMPTING to get this Rattus....... ;)
I just got a 2-3# bag of Pop Corn also, I wonder if this RAT has internet connections? ::)
Tia,
Don
-
I know it sounds crazy, but i’m Wondering if somehow that rat is climbing up somehow on your rifle after it’s been sighted in and bumping the poa off???
Something is going on for sure! :o
You’ll get him though. :D
-
I think now he should leave the gun right where it last shot. The miss was unbelievable, and had to have shaved some hairs. This rat is part cat and has a good memory, so I could be wrong, too.
-
If the Rat comes back, I think I might use the 12 gauge shotgun, LOL, I will try again, but I do think the Rat had been on the Rifle, I use a Caldwell dead shot tripod and the clamp is as tight as I could get it (without breaking it) and it still has some movement if you push hard enough, Maybe I need to raise the rifle higher away from the floor, right now it sits about 12 inches above the floor at the barrel end and the buttstock is about 20 inches and there is a chair there to hold the battery so it is possible the rat can get up on the rifle, I'm going to take a break and let the Rat calm down again and I will re-post when I kill the RAT.... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Ooooor... maybe the rats have their own forum and they are posting the same videos and laughing about it. :o
Get 'em Kevin!!

that is just crazy. i think if you look at it frame by frame you may realize that you are dealing with the rat Neo and he just pulled some matrix moves on you. no other explanation makes sense...

Wow, this is one epic hunt! I am amazed at the genius of the predator and also of the prey.
-
Kevin, please hurry and nuke that rattus as ALL THIS POPCORN is ruining my diet! LOL!
-
I think your going to get him on the next try, so I went ahead and got that new 880 for pre-celebration. ;)
He’s a smart rat for sure, but if he keeps coming back... lucks going to run out!
-
Wow right under him. You might have to breakout a claymore land mine! :o
-
Hey Kevin
Here a trick out of Wiley E play book, ::)
Get a Toilet/paper towel cardboard roll, set your rifle on the floor, well blocked up and stable,
put the cardboard tube over the bbl, place P butter inside the roll.
Le Smartaus rat will stick his head inside the cardboard tube, give him time to really start enjoying himself eating,
you pull the trigger and BLOW DEAD, SMARTAUS RATTUS out of the tube,
doing the Funky Chicken across the patio floor. ;) ;D LOL
Time to get serious Kevin.................
ps,
I got a 410 I can loan you, you can't miss with it............
Tia,
Don

I just caught another rat in an empty rat trap overnight. This one decided to chew a hole in my bird seed bag...big mistake. Worth a try. With no food in the trap I think they are less careful where they step.
-
Well, he's been a no show for the past couple of nights, I don't blame him, It's possible he had a heart attack and died somewhere, after that close miss it could be possible, but I doubt it, he's probably in the Neighbors Patio munching on Potatoes.... I'm ready when he comes back, I'll post as soon as it happens.
-
... well thx for the update. Almost 1AM and robocop airgunning that sly ratter was my last stop here...
... maybe tomorrow ;)
-
He is definitely spooked and not taking any chances. It's amazing how smart and cautious the rats are. He was checking out the area around the bait in a couple of the videos for a while before he took a bite, or went back to take another one.
I think this is the first thread in the Hunting Gate with over 1,100 views and nearly 100 posts and NO kill ;D
Oh well. It will happen when you have given up or least expect it. That's usually the case with me and G-hogs, or a crow which is extremely hard to get a shot at.
-
that's why this is so awesome, because of the efforts of both Kevin and Neo. Jeez i really did name the rat... maybe it has take too long
-
Neo is a proper name. The rat probably came from the Matrix and why it's such a worthy adversary.
-
Kevin
I have been really looking at the last video, IMHO, I think you got a hit on that rat, look at 1.37 > time line,
a very low hit thru the bottom of the rib cage, the rat flinches at the shot, then runs off etc,
and the pellet impact on the backstop.
Seeing that you did not hit the major vitals, (a higher up centered shot to impart more shock),
it looks like you got a hit, about a pellet width high thru the bottom of the rib cage,
I would call it a low liver hit, it will be a fatal wound, just not a quick as a centered hit, we are accustom too.
I hope I am wrong, as we want to see a center of mass funky chicken dance hit. ;) ;D
I have gained 5#'s eating a couple of bags of pop corn along with the lose of sleep, checking in............LOL

I also played back and paused the video many times since the first day, and also think the shot nicked the rat down low, how much damage I can't tell, some troubling rats I missed here many times with very close shots took like 6 to 8 days to return back to the feeder after the near-death experience, but they always returned, only one I'm sure I hit judging by the location mark the pellet left behind never came back, I'd say if this rat doesn't come back in the next few days, most likely she's a goner... ;D :(

I have hit rats only to have them escape through the fence to the neighbors ivy jungle. How do I know I hit them? The hole in my backdrop will have rat fur on the edges. I would look at the hole closely and see if there’s evidence.

Well another update, No Rattus still, you guys maybe right about the slight hit to the lowers, but I didn't find any evidence of a hit, but that doesn't mean it didn't scrap his stomach area too, I don't know, but I'm still ready if and when he comes back.
Love the GIF's too funny......
Tom that looks like my Texan..... ;D ;D ;D

And I thought my Condor .25 with TT shroud was long at 51", but that shrouded Texan goes on forever. Will your Texan fit in a 52" gun case with the tank removed? :)

No word from you, so I guess your buddy hasn't shown back up..............
You may have killed him, only you don't get a hero's photo with him,
so you rat action has come to a screeching halt? :o :o
