Title: CMP 853 Questions
Post by: mr007s on September 03, 2019, 08:36:42 AM
Seeking answers from owners:

1-How are they packaged for shipment
2- Which stock do you prefer
3-any other things you would like to add?

1-  They're usually packaged in a cardboard box, like other guns... Or do you mean what accessories does it come with?

2-  I prefer the standard (straight) stock it comes with, not the target (Monte Carlo) stock- personally, it's just more versatile with the standard stock.  It fits [me] well, it shoulders quickly and comfortably, and I feel that the fitment allows me to stay on moving targets easier. If it's strictly going to be a target gun or a bench gun,  go with the target stock.

3-  If I could add/change the gun a bit?  Hmmm...  For some reason I want a metal cocking arm, and I'd want the ability to add an LDC.  I know these things are silly quiet already being as low powered as they are, but SSP's tend to "pop" more.  If I could, I'd move the cocking arm to the side, making it a side-cocker instead of a underlever.  For bench shooting and prone shooting, I feel like that would be less awkward.  The gun works very well as-is, of course.  But I just feel like a side-cocker would just be more convenient.

The 853 is a pretty darn good gun for what it is.  Especially for the price, if bought from the CMP.

Mine was packaged very well in cardboard box. I have the Monte Carlo stock only so I can’t give a comparison.

What an absolute steal for what you get !

I have a Monte Carlo stock with a scope on it plus a standard stock with the furnished peep sights.
I like them both.
Mine came in a cardboard box with foam lining which was excellent.
Both of my guns will put 10 JSB 8.44 grain pellets into 1 ragged hole at 54 feet using a scope and sand bags.
The CMP Daisy 853s are bargains.

Mine were well packed in larger cardboard box, very well foam lined.
I have one of each, and cannot decide which one I like better.

Why not buy 1 of each? You will save on shipping................

I’ve ordered 3. All with the pistol grip configuration. One was not very good as some of the screws threads were stripped. I ordered parts and rebuilt it. Mine were admittedly pretty rough, but they made for fun project guns. For the price you can hardly beat the CMP deal.

Wait...
I picked up a red one at a pawn shop. It has the 5 round clip but it has a pellet (or two) stuck it the barrel. It's down in the shop disassembled. Is that what you are looking for?

Hard to say without seeing it. It should be stamped 853C, if it is the one I'm talking about...

I'll have a look at it this evening... I have too many other projects going to fool with this one.

I prefer the MC stock, for shooting in the standing position.
But even better, I swap the stock with the composite/plastic stock of the 953.
The 953 stock is a MC design, but the composite stock is HEAVIER than the wood stock, so better for target shooting.

Since I use it for target shooting, I upgrade the diopter sights.
- I remove the 853 muzzle weight, and swap in the muzzle weight from the 753.
- Then use the 753 sights (front and rear).

This converted it to 853-CM specs.

hmmm
Did not know that.
My 853 has the removable pellet tray.
It is stamped 853C, but I got it many years ago from an individual in the US.
But if it was made for Canada, that might also explain the slightly longer wood stock.

IF the trigger mod has not been done on the 853 that you get from the CMP, here is the thread on how to do the trigger mod yourself.  It is NOT difficult.

IIRC those Red ones were a SFO for SNAP-ON tools , at least that's what I've been told.

I have a CMP 853 with the wood MC stock. I upgraded to the 753 diopter sights, mounted on risers (I’m 6’2”), and fabricated a vertically adjustable butt plate. Even with the relatively short LOP, it fits me fine for 10m freehand.

And yes, Canadians do have longer arms.

Seeking answers from owners:

1-How are they packaged for shipment
2- Which stock do you prefer
3-any other things you would like to add?

If you're inquiring about 853's from CMP, my one from the Anniston Depot had been professionally packaged and was delivered in a very timely manner.  The other one was in its original Daisy box and was awaiting my pick up with my name on the box.  I extended the LOP on both and added 753 sights on the MC.

Nice looking shooters! Where did you source the 753 sight?

753 sights can be purchased from Daisy.
The rear diopter will set you back $35.00 and I believe $10.00 for the sight and barrel weight.
The rear sight is available from Amazon for about $31.00.

Thanks.  My 753 sights, rear and front, came from Daisy but I don't recall them costing some $50 dollars, but that was a few years ago?  The front sight and weight are required for the rear diopter to work properly.

The 753 rear sight is $35.00 and the front sight w/weight is $10.00, all plus shipping, which should be $5.00

The standard 853 rear sight is $16.00 and the front is also $10.00...............

This raises a new question. If the CMP 853 price is 105 plus shipping and probably very well used(read stock beat up) and the 753 sight and weight is purchased, I have close to 200 in it.

Why not just get a new 753 for 217$ off Amazon (synthetic stock)? It also has LW barrel. Who would do that and for go the 853?

If you don’t care wood vs. plastic, then that’s a good strategy.

Personally, I prefer a wood stock of that is an option, and I have the tools to do modifications.

Neither of my CMP 853's were 'beat up' nor otherwise marked.  Inasmuch as the Monte Carlo was blister wrapped in an original Daisy box, I question whether it had ever been issued?  OTOH, I have seen photos of some that were, shall we say, somewhat weathered.

If I could be sure of receiving one like that I would be fine. I really don't want to have to sand and refinish a stock. I think I saw the same photos of the "weathered ones".

Both of mine were well used but they work good.
My Monte Carlo stock was in better shape than my straight stock.

I recently ordered two of them.
I wanted both with Monte Carlo stocks, but that wasn't what I received (I have one of each)
I prefer the MC- it's larger and feels more solid, plus has a nice cheek rest.
It was packaged as well as any gun I've ever ordered (nice large rifle box with foam surrounding the guns.

Have you had a chance to shoot yours yet? Would be interested on your opinion of the triggers. I have read that sometimes an 853 will arrive with an already modded trigger,

I am not certain if the trigger has been modded or not, but whatever the case, it's a very nice trigger!
Not too heavy and not too light.

Thank you, I read lots of post about how bad the trigger is and will need to be worked on. This gives me hope but they claim the 753 has a lighter pull from the factory. So, still on the fence.

953, 853 or 753, same trigger.
Daisy "might" have finished the sear of the 853 and 753, and left the 953 sear unfinished.  But I have not disassembled a new 853 or 753 to determine that.

I think it is the 888 that has the adjustable trigger.

If you get a factory new 853, obviously the trigger mod has not been done.
If you get a used 853, the trigger mod may or may not have been done by the group that had the rifle.

The trigger mod is relatively easy to do.

The time consuming part is waiting for the parts to be mailed to you from Daisy.

I've never seen the 753 at such a low price.
I wonder if Gamo is "fire selling" it, to clear inventory.

That is a 753 with a composite stock.  Same stock as the 953.
I actually like that stock, because it is heavier than the wood stock.
But if you are shooting in HOT climate, I think the wood stock is preferred, as the composite could flex.

The 753 was on Amazon foe 214$ last Friday. It was the same page as you listed now for 236$. Looks like Amazon went up 25 bucks or so. Will see if I can put it on a watch list and watch cost fluctuate.

Looked at the one I have down in the shop this morning. It's the red 953 like the one Snap On sold or gave away with the tool box.
Someone has the barrel stuffed real good with pellets. At this point, it's a complete parts gun that needs a barrel... I don't have the desire to fool with it.

You are the only person besides myself who has the red one, that I know of.
)(Of course others HAVE them, but in my air gunning escapades over the years, I've not seen another mention this particular variety on the 953. I LOVE that gun.
