Title: H&N Baracuda Hunter Extreme Pellets vs JSB Hades both in 22 caliber
Post by: USAFANG6799 on August 31, 2019, 08:15:14 PM
Has anyone done a head to head comparison test between the H&N Baracuda Hunter Extreme Pellets and the JSB Hades?
There's a mighty close resemblance between the two except in weight. Baracuda HE is 18.52 Hades is 15.89
Price wise a tin of H&N HE 200 count is .055 per pellet.
Hades 500 is .044 per pellet.

I have the Hades but not the Baracuda HE to do a comparison.
The H&N HE never really caught my attention until now.

I have found the Hades perform much better than the H&N HE's in all 3 air rifles I have tested them in, my Mrod, FX Royale and Hatsan AT44.  All 3 of these will stack the Hades in a dime sized hole at 37 yards, the HE's will group inside a quarter, but will also have an occasional flyer.

Do you attribute that to the Hades are made by JSB the Baracuda HE by H&N?
JSB has been know to be one of the better pellet manufactures.

Do you remember the any of the ballistics of the Hades when you shot them through your Marauder?
I had some grouping problems when I shot them but that was at 15 yards. I think they were averaging around mid 900's.
I don't know if that was too fast for the Hades hence the less than steller grouping.

Matt, The only one I have chrony results for is the FX Royale, the Hades were averaging 987 fps from that rifle.

At that speed were they accurate?
I though that 22 diablo pellets became unstable past 950'ish?

Yes, from the FX they are extremely accurate. Here’s a picture of a group shot at 37 yards. The top hole was the first shot then I adjusted the zero 2 clicks down. The rest were all touching.

I have company this weekend, so won’t be able to do much shooting. Hopefully, after they head home tomorrow I’ll be able to shoot the Hades and Hunter Extremes side by side with all 3 air rifles and can post a comparison for you.

Be careful because sometimes company doesn't want to leave and they wind up moving in with you  ;D

LOL!  Yea, my Dad used to say company was like fish, they both start to stink after a couple days!  Well, the Hurricane is bearing down on the East coast, here in the Western end of the Panhandle, we're having a rather nice day!  The grand kids were amusing themselves in the pool, so I did a really quick comparison of the two pellets with my 3 best shooting .22's.  Sorry, no chrony results and this wasn't my best shooting since I was trying to knock it out without appearing to be too rude to the company!  All three were shot from my Cauldwell DeadShot tripod at 37 yards.  Not that I'm making excuses, but the FX had the ATN 4K Pro mounted to it and it's not the greatest for target shooting due to the video image being grainy and the the zoom is only about 10X.  With a decent glass optic, the FX does much better.  But for capturing video of rats getting blasted, the ATN/FX combo can't be beat!   ;D  That Mrod never ceases to amaze me!  I hope these help some...

Nice shooting Paul! I like the Hades grouping much better than the H&N Hunter Extremes. Nice side by side comparison.

so the hades seem to group better than the H&Ns.is that enough to order some?i wonder how the hades would"stack"up againt the regular JSB 15.89 grain pellets?what is the advantage of the hades over other pellets?

Hollow point vs domed pellet. From what I've read on here, the Hades' trajectory is similar to the JSB 18g. I doubt their BC is as good as a domed 15.89g or 18g JSB.

Based on the shape of the head of the pellet, I would assume the Hades expand much more than the regular round head JSB’s. Accuracy wise the Hades are very similar to the domed pellets.

I do know that when shooting rats with the Hades, compared to the domed, the Hades will take down a rat in its tracks, where the domed tend to go right through a rat and they may run off a few feet before they expire.

Okay, I swapped the ATN scope for a Bushnell Trophy and shot three 5 shot strings.  Same set-up as last time, but just shot them from the FX Royale.  The far left are the Hades, center are the Diablo 18.13 grain and the right are the Diablo 15.89 grain.  With me shooting, it appears the Hades have a slight edge, but your mileage may vary!   ;D

Yep that slight edge does go to the Hades. JSB  knows they have a winner.
Was this shot at 37 yards also?

Yep, same set-up as the comparison of the Hades and the Hunter Extremes, 37 yards from my Deadshot tripod rest.   JSB has the price of the Hades at a premium also!  LOL!  Hopefully, the price will settle to the same as the other JSB 500 count tins in the near future.  I'm looking forward to the release of the .25 Hades also, I think those will be devastating!

Given the popularity of the Hades I'm sure there isn't much pressure to drop the price any.
So they'll ride it for all it's worth.
I'm surprised that JSB has not released the .25 already.

I did a good amount of groundhog control this summer using Hades, Hunters and Hunter Extremes with a .22 Bullboss.

Acurracy was pretty much the same for all three, about 3/4” at 50.

Terminal performance is where they are very different.

Groundhogs are skiddish as *(&^ so I always go for a body shot as soon as possible.

The Hunter Ex are the worst by far, they only expand when they are still smokin fast. On targets over 20yards they just punch a small hole. So in a nutshell they function like a low BC dome.

The Hunters on the other hand hit with a crack. They expand well out to about 40 yards, after that they drop off fast. Under 30 yards these are lights out.

The Hades are interesting because they are sort of a hybrid. They expand and fragment. At close ranges they dont expand as much as a Hunter, but the pieces between the three sections of the head will fragment and cause damage.  They also expand decently out to 50 yards.

I personally like the Hunters a bit more. A good hit with those and a groundhog just rolls over or crawls a few feet before gassing out.

The Hades will do the same thing, just not as often.

I'd also like to suggest trying the .22, 25.4g JSB Ultra Shock.

This is all very interesting to me.
Thanks for the info! :)

As far as expansion goes, I would suspect that the faster pellet would expand better, so over 2gr lighter makes a difference, especially at longer ranges.
Of course, if you tune your gun to a higher power that difference disappears...

Now I'd really like to see a comparison of their BC...!    ;)

My shots tonight show that the JSB Hades have a BC =0.023  the H&N Baracuda Hunter Extreme have a BC=0.024 and the H&N Baracuda Hunter have BC=0.020
My measurements were taken with a lab radar at muzzle out to 60 yards.

It is worth noting that the JSB seam to really spiral out after about 50 yards in my 1:7 twist  @ 839.3 FPS avg.

Cal's BC NUMBERS
•H&N Baracuda Hunter Extreme: BC = 0.024
•JSB Hades:  BC = 0.023
•H&N Baracuda Hunter: BC = 0.020
Specs:
0—60y
25FPE
Labradar
1:7 twist barrel

😄 Cal, thanks a lot for those numbers — I'll add them to my BC-table of .22 pellets!
I'll need to publish an update soon.
