Title: New .20 Caliber Pellets!
Post by: fwbsport on August 27, 2019, 04:41:29 PM
JSB Exact Heavy Pellets .20 15.89gr.  I get them at AOA and they'll be in tomorrow.  I want to see how they do in the HW97K and HW80 .20, and I can say this morning I shot the faithful HW80 .20 ("at the target" "instead of holdover"--as somebody said on another thread concerning long distance shooting...hmmmm....somebody's taking a shot at me ;) but remember I shoot ONLY OFFHAND STANDING!) hitting at 30 yards with

OPEN SIGHTS

as usual, as easily as I do with either of my HW35E's.

Now, about holdover, I have the open sights on all my rifles set for 35 yards dead on no holdover.  If I go further I just climb the front sight inside the groove on the rear sight.

But now I have decided the Swar will have to go on.  It is lighter and a 3-9X with the purest glass I've ever seen and 9 power is enough for me to take a shot out to 100 yards easy!  But our air rifles don't shoot that far! With accuracy.

The sunlight was just right for me to see the pellet and speed of my HW80 and that .20 goes a LOT faster than the .20 in the HW97K (the usual JSB .20 Exacts).

I'll be posting more!  The .20 HW80 is the finest rifle I've ever owned!   ;D

I can tell u this from experience, I had a RWS 48 that I converted to .20cal with an LW barrel it shot the H&N FTT's at around 860fps ave, those pellets shot very flat out to 60yds with no hold over with a 30yd zero!  :o

Mark, I assume that more than likely Fang did your .20cal RWS48.  My question is, would you recommend a 20cal Airking (RWS54) thats a 22cal?  I been contemplating it, then I read Nitrocrushr's TL kit that he put into his RWS 56.

Jay, an old school tuner out of Michigan built that rifle for me! Who has been retired for awhile now! WF, OC basically learned how to do the barrel work from him and improved upon the method or re barreling these plat forms, IMO the .20cal is a very good bore DIA for this power plant for a long range shooter! If ur planning to short stroke the rifle I would opt for a .177cal if u have a rifle with a barrel that will stack pellets! I'm a big fan of the .22cal and the .20cal when it comes to these big power plant rifles! When I think of a rifle of the size of the 48 family I think power!!!! when I think of a rifle this size being turned into a short stroked 12ftlb or under I think FWB300s! If ur planning on keeping the rifle forever? Then do as u will! The reason I say this is because of the expense it will cost u today just for the barrel and the installation, LW barrels are finished in the white, meaning their not blued! back when I was re barreling guns thru my friend in Michigan I was getting it done for the cost of the barrel + shipping, to me it was a well ventured affair because I got a lot of experience with different power plant rifles like the 48 family and other break barrel rifles that at the time were not offered in .20cal and I also re barreled some other rifles .177cal and .22cal and .25cal using Lothar Walther barrels! my point is w you will not recover ur money back for all ur efforts after u build something like this unless its very unique or something someone is looking for to shoot in FT or other competition shooting! guns like Nitrocrushr's has been building is very time consuming! and to add a LW barrel to it u would have a lot invested into that rifle! I know because I've done it many times over the yrs! just my thoughts ;)

Very interesting that the barrel of a D48 can be replaced. I'd like to learn more about that.
I don't know anything about gunsmithing barrels but I've often wondered about getting a .177 then boring it out to .20 cal or getting a .22 cal and boring it out to .25 cal.

I know that we never really recover our invested $ but I probably wouldn't sell her anyway lol. But people like you, etc got me wanting to swap barrels and bust a** in HFT or whatever lol.

Are you guys saying a .20 the same weight as a.22 out of the same power plant has a flatter trajectory?

It stands to reason that it quite possibly could. Having less frontal area for the same weight would normally make a higher ballistic coefficient which in turn leads to flatter trajectory and less wind drift. Whether or not it's measurable between each pellets specific design and pellet velocity is to be determined. I believe that it would be for a given power plant.

Well its like this, the HW95 is capable of 800 to 830fps with an 11.42gn H&N FTT lead pellet, ur probably not going to see those velocities from a .22cal with a lead pellet! now if u alloy guy's want to jump in the game with the 11gn alloy pellets in .22cal those same velocities are achievable at around 800fps! at probably 2x the cost on pellets! even at the .20cal will shoot a lot flatter  ;)

I ended up putting a Vortex Viper 2.510X 44mm with 30mm tube!  The Diana Bullseye sight had insertable 1" rings within the 30mm rings so I looked at my one 30mm tube and decided to give it at least a try.  I was thinking I'd probably go back to the idea of a 1" tube just to make the rifle lighter; but after I got the rail mount and scope zeroed I realized the 30mm tube was MADE for the HW80 .20.

The HW80 .20 with the Diana Bullseye mount/rings/Vortex 2.5-10X weighs in at exactly 10.8 pounds!  It is actually a delight to shoot offhand!  My HW35Es weigh 8 pounds each without scopes, so the 2.8 lbs are worth it.  The balance is tremendous.

I have shot up another tin of 500 JSB Diablo Exacts (there were about 200 of those to shoot up) with the HW 80 .20 and will start shooting these new heavier ones.  They look an awful like the old Sheridan .20 pellets with a wider waist.

This rifle is quiet but the blast is loud and often smoke leaks out of the barrel--but it shoots exactly 1 inch high at 35 yards--I have to use the military lateral line for the vertical 1" above the steel to hit directly.

There was a thread about pellet bounce back from golf balls and I will mention this .20 blows up its pellets when hitting hard ground as well as flagstone and steel!  There are pieces of .20 cal discs paper thin representing nothing but lead left over to cover .20" and no larger!

No blow back in this rifle is capable--especially from a golf ball--anything harder than the earth in the ground fragments the pellet into absolute oblivion! ;D

If anyone REALLY wants a 0.20" cal. 54 with L-W barrel, MADE BY DIANA. One of a special run of 30 rifles.
I still have 2 that are single rifles.
I also have a matched pair of a 54 AND a 34k with identical run numbers.

Not inexpensive, but truly worthwhile pieces and excellent shooters all of them. NIB.

Drop me a line.

Recently I found a Beeman R10 (HW85) in .20 and have been getting acquainted.
She likes the JSB 13.73 so I tried the 15.89 heavies... Same pattern just an inch lower at 30 yards.
I still need to run it across the Chrono, but that is about what I expected.

I would think if the power plant is strong?  between 700 and 750fps a factory HW95/R9 out of the box will typically shoot an 11.42 H&N FTT @ 740fps ::)

When u start shooting a pellet weight above the 11.42gn  .20cal pellets and into the 13gn weight ur now looking at .22cal velocities out of ur .20cal rifle, they might run a tic faster but this is what's is to be expected and why I try to shoot the 11.42 FTT's, even tho the 13gn are just as accurate! I like the flatter trajectory of the 11's ;D

Mark... Maybe a Stoopid question...Who makes the 11.42?
I am away from my JSB and Benjiman tins.
 I just received my H&N .20's

The 48/52 barrel removal can be done an still have the removed barrel unharmed. Same goes in the 460 which make another fine Magnum . 20.
The only critical removal of the barrel is having to go down through the receiver to remove the barrel.
1 slip up and the receiver can be damaged. But with barrel removals there are always safe guard tricks. It's not a cheap transition. Barrel alone is $140 +- in a blank.
You have lathe time, barrel removal and install plus the tear down and rebuild costs.
The breech nipple is not that big of a deal other than getting you nipple lenght correct. I never had time shim a breech seal or remove a barrel to correct the over lenght nipple. But I have the tooling to cut the nipple lenght down if to long.  Never had to use it.

These platforms make super nice LW . 20 RIFLES. JMO 💀 LOVED MY 48 .20. It's somewhere out there as some of my other rebarrels.

Here it was in a Howy's custom build Ash stock with  rose wood inlays.
