Title: Red Dot sight/scope
Post by: Nvreloader on July 14, 2019, 02:55:39 PM
Guys

Will this  Red Dot optic work on a Ruger break bbl 17 caliber AR?
I cannot find any info stating it is tough enough to use on a break bbl air gun etc.

Thoughts or suggestions appreciated........

Tia,
Don

I have these on a couple magnum springers, they hold up well and are clear.

If you want a finer dot and one that can be used without batteries look into the prism dot scopes. I have the Monstrum Prism sight on my M-rod .177, way better for pinpoint longer range shooting than a basic dot sight.

Many of the Mini dot sights are built to stand up to a 1911 .45 and are mounted on the slide. No Springer has that much thump. Not even close, and it has the double recoil. Just like the lowly springer. Jut a carp load more of it! ;)

I just bought one from amazon that was total &^^& and red dot was like a splattering if tiny red dots and nothing close to clear and precise. Beware.

There are "Red / Green, Multi Reticle/ Dot" sights (they are NOT "Scopes" because they DON'T enlarge the image) they can and cannot withstand not falling apart on small to large bore Centerfire weapons and easily not fall apart even mounted to a low recoil (kinetic energy) 22LR weapon. The big question is, will the LED mechanism hold the reticle or a simple dot in the same place on the imaging glass (or plastic if it a cheapy)?

You also have to keep in mind that there are THREE main types of "LED dot" (whether they are a red or green LED): reflex, prismatic and holographic sights. Reflex is short for reflector, sights use a light-emitting diode, or LED to project an aiming point – the dot (or Reticle – onto a lens that the shooter looks through. If you want to learn more, read this article from the NRA Blog https://www.nrablog.com/articles/2017/2/red-dots-101-understanding-the-types-of-sight-systems/ (https://www.nrablog.com/articles/2017/2/red-dots-101-understanding-the-types-of-sight-systems/).

I've been a Gunsmith since my early teens on our family farm in N Illinois, when I was a Police Officer I was the department armorer and shooting instructor.

There are junk, good and really good LED Dot Sights sold on EBay, Amazon (usually the same with different names) and the like wedsite stores (like Optics Planet - very good to garbage quality), at this point nearly all are Made In China, which we've learned has "Hit" and "VERY Miss" design, manufacturing and Quality Control.

One thing you will notice it the very same looking sight will show up with dozens to a hundred different names on them, even well known brand names. OFTEN because it's made at the same China factory and "re-branded" or worse a copy by another China factory (often in a garage to an old warehouse) and the quality is garbage). We know that the Chinese LOVE to ripoff American and European Designs (patents and Intellectual Property) with "clones", but they also love to ripoff each other China manufacturers! You CANNOT count on written reviews or testimonials either, most review are SPAM written by the China factories employees, even Amazon's reviews are filled with fakes these days and Amazon is doing nothing about it.

So what do you do? 1) Get advice from someone who has one they LOVE and have used for a LONG time, it's been impeccably reliable, holds it's sighting and can tell you exactly where to buy the same one. 2) Buy it from a source that you can RETURN IT to that will not give you a load of cr@p trying to do so, if it turns out to be faulty.

I've mostly used LED and Holographic red and green dots that I have already used on my Center Fire rifles or pistols.  This one is (pictured on my Crosman DPMS SBR) I also use on my FN FNC 5.56 NATO rifle which has quite a "kick" and it's held up wonderfully so far for about a couple thousand rounds of Run n Gun match practice and comp shooting. I bought mine from Amazon, but I've seen them also on EBay .... however, I don't know if those are the same unbranded or ripoff clones.
