So I have a little unimat lathe and have found I can do a lot with a drill and hand tools once I get over the fear of messing something up. I cannot figure out however how to cut the oring into the end of a barrel? Is there a specific bit for this or something? I realize it would be cheaper and less headache to order one but I am in Alaska.. I have been waiting over 4 months for a ss valve that was only supposed to take 2 weeks and over 6 months for some .172 bullets that were supposed to ship in a week. Also I want to eventually Be able to make air rifles from start to finish as winters can become long without some indoor projects.

I just ground one out of a piece of HSS tooling.... I used a bench grinder, and then did the notch with a Dremel cut-off wheel....

The notch must be big enough to allow you to cut the groove the proper distance from the end of the barrel and clear the bore at the full depth of cut....

Thanks Bob. If I understand correctly, you hold the tool stationary on a lathe and turn the barrel then?

Bob that looks like the perfect tool for making the I.D. groove for an o ring.

That is correct. Lathe work is nearly always performed with the work turning and the tool stationary. (A few exceptions like gear cutting excluded)

Well, I cheated. Not having a lathe, I chucked the probe up in the mill and turned a groove in it. Much the way BSA does it.
Travis suggested this, and it works perfectly! 8)
