Title: Edgun Lelya 2.0 - My Ongoing Photo Thread (and Some Random Thoughts)
Post by: PiterM on July 10, 2019, 11:49:59 AM
Yeah... a little bit late jump on the Lelya 2.0 bandwagon but still better than never. So let me start my usual ongoing thread of my thoughts, piuctures, tips, mods and such. But before I start with some initial thoughts - here's my combo - Lelya 2.0 in 177 (set at roughly 12 fpe), 1-6x24 C-More scope, Leupold mount and Eberlestock S25 Cherry Bomb pack. Two polymer mags and JSB Exact ammo. What a combo!

I admit, it looks really cool. Actually it's not the bad thing that I waited a bit... as far as I know Edgun changed supplier of the wood material and the stock is quite stunning. BTW, Edgun West has a Matador R5M Long with that new kind of wood in stock. At least the one in the picture looks just gorgeous. Overall look is more like 'micro Matador R5M' than old Lelya, which is not a bad thing. It shares mechanics with new Matador, so should be robust and reliable. Actually I regret selling old Lelya, it was so compact! New one is small, but not as small as original one (about 2 inches difference, not much) and it's considerably heavier due to bigger tank, bigger moderator and multishot system. BUT the great news is - it STILL FITS PERFECTLY inside Eberlestock S25 Cherry Bomb. And that is an awesome pack, which I reviewed here: https://motusworld.com/2013/12/review-eberlestock-s25-cherry-bomb-secret-weapons-backpack (https://motusworld.com/2013/12/review-eberlestock-s25-cherry-bomb-secret-weapons-backpack)

Comparison to Leshiy? Well, two VERY different animals and my Leshiy is not going anywhere. Leshiy is considerably smaller for transport BUT it's longer in shooting position! So if you're looking for maximum maneuverability in a dense bushy forest etc. than Lelya 2.0 is considerably better choice. That is a bit surprising to me. But... that's how it is.

Lelya 2.0 handles well, cycles nice and smooth, shoots AWESOME off-hand. It's shorter than Leshiy and much heavier - the more 'condensed mass' is probably main reason for that great off-hand shooting. Trigger is a bit crisper too, but I got used to Leshiy's trigger. As I said - different animals. Leshiy is a portable modular airgun, kind of 'urban ambush' gun (if I may say so) and Lelya 2.0 is more traditional (but supercompact) bullpup multishot.

So far I noticed just one thing I'd correct in Lelya 2.0 (and I did) - I added white 'indexing dot' on magazine, so that I always know if I'm empty or if there is still that last pellet to cycle into chamber. But it was 5 seconds job with white permanent marker. Quick summary after two weeks - I'm soooo delighted with my new toy! And it just perfectly fills the gap between my Leshiy in .22 and my R5 cannon in .30, both single shots.

Of course I'll keep that thread alive, no worry. And here it is on duty in the forest:

Cheers!

That wood is @#$%#$%^#% AMAZING!!!  Actually, that's a cool little rig.  I wouldn't mind getting one on these in .22cal, tuning it down from 900fps to 800fps, to eek out about 50 shots.  Man, if I could get wood like yours, I'm not sure I could resist!  I would have preferred that the trigger guard connected back to the grip, for strength, but it does look very cool the way it is.

Piter, congratulations! That is one gorgeous stock on a wonderful Edgun! Nice overall package with the compact scope 👍.

Been using her for another week... really like the off-hand shootability of that new Lelya. However I still need to find & buy an aftermarket bipod/weaver adapter (one that fits into front guard screw socket). There are some guys producing that stuff on CNC. Anyway, together with that Cherry Bomb pack it makes an easy to carry around multishot setup, capable of pellet on pellet accuracy at 35 yards and easily half inch groups at 50.

Hmmm.... and she looks quite handsome too. For a photography junkie like me that is a valid factor, like it or not.

BTW, someone asked me about longer distanses (elsewhere) - didn’t try my Lelya on anything above 50 so far. For longer distance I shoot at my local 100m shooting range with R5 .30 cal and of course there's no comparison between .30 and .177 at anything beyond 50y.

The only real drawback of 177 is lack of wind resistance, but since I’ve got two guns in 22 and one in 30… no problem with that. Just having fun with Lelya so far, learning trigger, etc.

Late update but it’s vacation time, and taking Lelya up into the mountains for a family hike is not an option. But just before vacation I played with my L in the field... so much fun!

Piotr, you have a wonderful eye for photography and your gorgeous Leyla stock fits right in! Beautiful setting against that haystack and colored wall. Bet she shoots as well as she looks 😉.

I’m now in a remote backcountry with VERY bad network (and I love it!) so forgive me low update level... will do better soon :)

For now - forest time:

Piter, another beautiful photo! You must be out hunting or target shooting with your laser range finder 👍. I just recently picked up a Sony RX100 IV as these cameras are much more compact and easier to carry than my micro 4/3 cameras but still have a good sensor just for the purposes you are doing!

Thanks!

And I agree both m4/3 (I used to own Oly cameras) and RX100 (got one currently too) are awesome cameras! RX100 is now my default mountaineering / MTB camera. Stunning quality. And I mean overall, not just for the size.

You’re welcome Pietr! LOL....back in the late 80’s I used to ski with a DSLR then my Leica M6! I sure wish I had the RX 100 back then! Just wish it had weather sealing..that’s my ONLY gripe with this little beast 😉....a minor quibble at best. This is my do it all camera now. Enjoy your time out There and be safe!

At the risk of sounding shallow, the prettier something is the better you like it..... that is one beautiful looking piece. The best looking stock i have seen on any air rifle.

Thanks! And yes, I really like stuff that nit just works but also looks good. That’s why I don’t own anymore some PCP’s with that superthin barrel exposed ;)

Anyway, this one also works good! 50 yards with 6x scope... but that C-More 1-6x is stunning crispy little beast made for competitive shooting. I guess some 0.6 - 0.7 inch C-T-C in 5 shot groups is not bad result. Now I need bigger scope and it'll be easily sub-MOA at 50y! Or... really do I? Hmmm, I just love that compact look. So before I move to something bigger (and I will one day, just for test) I'll check also Stalker 6 on her :)

Another update... I had to try what it's really capable of. So put Vortex 4-16x44 Diamondback Tactical FFP with scope leveler on my Lelya and to my surprise it's not a bad looking combo. Actualy it's kind of )&^%*^ little sniping bullpup!

I've been shooting off a sandbag, which is even more stabile than a bipod. And with scope level I was not affraid of canting anyway (which is really crucial for off the sandbag shooting). I was shooting at 25 yards and 50 yards. At 25 it was generally one hole. At 50 yards I could go at or sometimes just below 1/2 of an inch c-t-c! So at 50y it's sub-MOA airgun in my book. With selected ammo and perfect no wind conditions of course. I had mine set at 17 Joule which is a bit above 12 fpe - thanks to that I can shoot on open land, not just range (local law). So with big scope it's a VERY capable airgun. I could speed it up and register but so far I'm not tempted - for long range work my R5 in .30 cal (over 100 Joule!) is waaaay better solution anyway.

Next scope to check is my Stalker 6 of course... stay tuned!

Sooo... I've been out on vacations recently and here I got some pics for you. Lelya is perfect travel companion - fits in a small backpack (Tasmanian Tiger Modular 30 or Eberlestock S25 Cherry Bomb) and it's very quiet. Perfect choice for vacation fun airgun! And combined with small scope like Stalker 6 it's quick, compact and plenty accurate for outdoor holiday plinking. It’s a very VERY shootable combo!

Some pics below... here it is with Stalker 6 and Tasmanian Tiger pack:

Thank you guys! Well, my Lelya .177 is a perfect plinker and I can take her everywhere with me. No need for a shooting range. Weekend in a backcountry? Sunday in the forest? Or just afternoon plinking session after long day in the office? Perfect for anything. Short & quiet, doesn't attract unwanted attention. And fully legal in the field at 17J, anywhere and anytime (but - safety first, of course). I can tell you that plinking in such a wild place as this, next to the mountain creek and surrounded by colors of autumn, is something really special:

Piter,

How is the trigger on this gun?  (and on Edguns in general?)

Thanks.

How is the trigger on this gun?  (and on Edguns in general?)

Every gun is different:

- EdGun Leshiy: single stage trigger, simple and reliable. There’s nothing to be broken in that gun. But you need to get used to that trigger. 2-stage conversion is possible with just changing one screw behing trigger blade but I orefer it just as is

- EdGun R5 .30 cal: two stage fully adjustable trigger. I set mine a bit harder than usually as it’s a 100+ Joule beast and I want it to be super safe.

- that new Lelya 2.0: superb trigger! Crisp and reliable, fully adjustable. It’s not a match trigger (so you can’t dial it down to just ‚touch’) but it can be set very lightweight, so that the second stage is just  a bit above first one. Very very good trigger. Thanks to overall ballance and that trigger Lelya is my most accurate off-hand shooting airgun ever. It’s my most used airgun at this moment.

Hope this helps.

BTW, what is really great about EdGuns is real field-proven durability. If you drop it in a barn, ding it on a truck etc. it doesn’t matter. It’s build like a real field gun! All heavy metal, one-piece milled chassis, no thin barrel exposed. I used to have AirArms S400. Suuuuperbly accurate airgun... aslong as you don’t touch (let along ding!) any hard object with it. If I leaned it against a tree without superb care, well... I needed to zero it again. Lelya or Matador? You can drive nails with that beast :)

Great info, thank you!  That's really good news about the R5 and Leyla triggers, as those are the guns I'm most interested in.  If the trigger could be dialed down to 8oz, AND be super crisp, I'd be happy.  The trigger in my Regal XL really spoiled me.  The build quality of these guns is one of the things that draws me to them.  Now I just need my financial situation to change so that I can get me one of these  ;D  It will definitely be awhile.

What I like about Lelya (all generations) is that I can fit one in a variety of pack. Not just dedicated gun packs like Eberlestock but also more standard stuff like this Tasmanian Tiger Modular Pack 30. There are many variants of that pack, also some more „civilian looking” than this black multicam. But hey, black multicam is cool.

Fit is very good. If Lelya would be just one inch longer it’d not fit inside this pack. Yeah, Lelya has juuust perfect in size!

Forgive me a little slow down due to Christmas and so.... but... here finally some close-ups of that beauty. I really dig all the design details, egdes, curves, etc. It looks (and is) very rugged, built to last for sure. And last but not least I love that chunky moderator with knurled end and the fact that barrel is fully hidden inside chassis. Thin and exposed airgun-obvious barrel is the last thing I'd like to see on my PCP ;)

I really like the Leshiy.
It depends on the power level to a point, but I think the MRod is a little more quiet to my ears.  Okay, compared to my .22 Leshiy out of the box, a lot more quiet.  If I opt for adding a Sumo or similar, I'm sure I could knock the bark off even more.

I think you'd enjoy a Leshiy; there's nothing quite like it except >maybe< the Rex pistol.  My Leshiy was shipped running hot- darn near 35 FPE in .22, and I don't think there's an easier PCP to tune.  I'm using the stock regulator (Ed's newer design) and just tweaked it down to 560 FPS using JSB Ultra Shocks, then adjusted hammer spring tension until the speed fell, then turned it back up a scosche.  Incidentally, JSB Ultra Shocks are like tiny little sledgehammers of lead in this gun.  25+ grains in a .22 at 560 FPS :)  The gun ain't cheap but I find it a joy to use freehand.  For a gun with a 10" barrel, it performs quite well and is very accurate.

However, the Lelya 2.0 is even better freehand and that's how I do the vast majority of my shooting.  I'll be ordering one in 3 or 4 months.

How funny in February I thought it would be mid-year, and by the end of May I was enjoying my .25 Lelya!  Mine does not have anywhere near as nice a stock, but I've been toying with getting the laminate yellow stock for mine.

I can attest these bullpups are amazing in the field.  Pest rodents might as well just slit their own throats given how easy this platform works freehand; the mass is all close-in and a good compact scope makes it a no-brainer.  I have an ACOG on mine, and though only 4x, the vast majority of shots taken for pesting are inside 30 yards.  Between the Lelya (my girlfriend uses it mostly) and my .25 Leshiy, I can say the EdGuns are really enjoyable to carry afield.

Piotr- thanks for sharing!

I gotta tell you Peter, I've worked with some very fine exotic woods over the years. But this is breath takenly striking! Beautiful!!!!

I would expect to pay north of a grand for such a blank.
