Hi All,
I recently sent two Lothar Walther, stainless steel, barrel blanks to Matt at JSAR. They ate 1:10 polygonal twist and .177 caliber. I want to shoot bullet shaped projectiles with them.
I'd like to shoot H&N Piledrivers first. If I don't get good accuracy with the Piledrivers I would try out NSA bullets.
I know Matt has experience and knows what he's doing but I want to confirm a couple things. This is where I need your recommendations.
Firstly, I want all operations indicated off the bore. I did ask for 1/2" unf threads on the muzzle for ldc's and the barrels to be crowned. The barrels are .63" diameter and if they prove to be accurate, I will cover them with matte, pulltruded, carbon fiber tubing for aesthetics. I don't like the regular carbon fiber weave pattern. I just want the barrels to be black.
What should I ask for concerning a breach leade? Also the one barrel he will copy for my Daystate MK4 has a perpendicular to the bore transfer port. Is there anything special I should specify? This barrel also has flats for grub screws to hold the barrel in place. Is there anything that can be done better?
The second barrel is for an HW100. That gun has a flow through pellet probe so doesn't use a transfer port.
Is there anything that I am missing?
I thank you All in advance for all your help! :)

This is stuff you should be discussing with the fellow doing the work so that the additional work can be put into the quote...avoids surprises and disappointments.
Truthfully...it doesn't sound like you have a fantastic understanding of the subject, and likely will complicate the issue immensely. I feel for Matt, and am glad he's the one working with you.
Yes....I can be a dick...but I'm honest. ;)

Al,
I completely understand I am deferring to Matt's experience. I don't know about that or pretend to. ;)
I had talked to him on the phone about a month ago. I just was trying to see what the latest accuracy tweaks and such were.
I didn't want to overlook anything so that's the reason I asked today.
He said he would call me when he received the blanks and the barrels to copy.
Thanks,
Taso

i do my own barrels and i agree with Gippeto, you do not understand what you think you want
Matt has more experience in this then 99% of the people on this forum and you are asking them for advise ?
talk to Matt, he will help you

Strever,
Got it! Matt's the expert!
Thank you!

Read this post earlier in the day ... Noticed the alligator pit & said nothing. Lol :-X
Matt will hook you up I'm sure.

I don't understand where the confusion is stemming from? Maybe I wasn't clear enough. It's happened before and I'd like to correct it.
I sent Matt some barrels to machine last Saturday. The estimated delivery day was today. I doubt he's done anything with them yet as he said it would take about a month. All good so far.
I have no complaints/beefs/criticisms with Matt. We talked on the phone about a month ago and he was very courteous. I took longer to pack up the barrels properly to send to him but I did let him know they were on their way and for him to expect them.
All I was asking through the machinist forum is what I need to request from him. What I thought was a very simple request for suggestions. Somehow something went wrong.
Since I still don't see what I did wrong or to offend, which was never my intention, I'd like to know what it was I said so that I can clear up the confusion and better explain what I meant.
Thank you,
Taso

Offend? Not at all lol.
JMHO, but you're heading down a road that leads to a being a "difficult" or even "nightmare" customer for someone. Have seen it too many times (I worked with a fellow who did this a LOT)...and yes, been on the receiving end of it as well (professionally and airgun/hobby related) and it does tend to sour ones disposition somewhat.
A fellow with limited knowledge asks some questions, gets a few answers of varying accuracy....then proceeds to tell some other fellow whom is performing the work "how" to do the work...getting a large percentage of the information wrong in the process and demonstrating his lack of knowledge. All the while insisting he wants it done this "certain" way...but....the fellow doing the work is still going to be held accountable whether it works out or not...darn if you do, darn if you don't....and tossed under a bus if you refuse.
All of that is avoided SO simply by "A"...picking someone by reputation (Which I'm guessing you did with Matt.), and "B"...discussing requirements with THEM. This puts both parties on the same page and as mentioned earlier....avoids surprises and disappointments.

Pretty much spoken in laymen terms ... & no offense taken either.

Gippeto and Scott,
I really appreciate your responses.
I went with Matt because of what I heard and that he was one of the best. I will defer all to his experience because I know that I don't know anything about barrel prep. ;) I would never tell him how to do a job that I have no clue. lol I want the barrels to shoot good and I'm sure he will not steer me wrong.
I will be talking to him soon and I just like to be prepared with some questions in case he didn't touch on them. I don't like to assume or leave things to chance. That was all I intended.
Thank you,

I figure Taso will have over $500 in these barrels, and he hopes they shoot good. Doesn't seem like a nasty, pushy guy from what I've read.
I think "Firstly, I want all operations indicated off the bore" could have been worded differently.
Personally, I'd just keep calling the guy and ask why is this taking so long!!!
Just Kidding,
Steve

Come on guys! lol
Everything is good! I talked to Matt yesterday. I was worried for nothing.
I'm a little bit of a worry wart, but not terrible. ;D I just like piece of mind.
We were both on the same page and I guess he had read my initial slug gun thread.
He will work on my barrels once they get the new Raptor's out or something like that. I told him I have waited this long and a couple weeks isn't going to make a difference to me. ;D
You guys on the other hand are chomping at the bit! :o
Just kidding!
I'm still working on a stretch of land to test on and to get my HW100 close to the 40 fpe mark if I can. The Daystate should be ok with the Heliboard Xtreme.
Thanks Everyone and Steve for the kind words!

Is there anything that I am missing?
Hi Taso, Any discussion about sending the receivers to the machinist so he can precision cut / verify the barrel work?
Just curious and I'm not an expert, but I have cut about 30 barrels from blanks and I always have the receiver in hand before I start...
I'm sure this will work out. I like to see folks getting work like this done when they need it. Back when I was looking there was no one to be found.

Hi Gary!
Matt did not request the receivers. I had sent him pictures in advance of the barrels though. He does want me to measure the depth that the barrels are inserted into the receivers and I will send more pictures better illustrating the barrel to receiver interface.
He did ask where I got the barrels from. He was shocked that they were Lothar Walther barrels as the ones he's seen look extruded and the bores aren't aligned well.
He said that my barrels were turned on the exterior and the bores were better aligned to the center. I know my barrels were made in Germany and custom ordered. Maybe one of those characteristics makes the difference?
I don't know as these are the first barrel blanks I have had in my hands.
I opted not to get the od on the barrels finished. I joked to Matt that this is a big carp shoot for me as my experiment may produce tomato stakes! lol
If my experiment is successful I will most likely cover the barrels in pultruded carbon fiber tubing for aesthetic reasons. I'm not a fan of the look of the weave pattern in carbon fiber.
Thanks,
Taso
