I was out shooting the springers yesterday afternoon. I had the pellet stop set up at about 20 yards and they guns were grouping quite well. Satisfied the scopes were zeroed I moved the stop out to 30 yards.
That's when it all fell apart! I was lucky to hit a 3" target and a lot of times it was "No idea where that hit!". I tried different holds, rests, pellets, etc. But both guns were way off their game and the Mayhem was acting like it was possessed with a bad scope (its not a bad scope).
What happens in those last few yards that makes such a big difference?

sounds like you are shooting wad cutters
you don't say what kind of gun or what kind of pellets or velocity
you need to give more info

I've not noticed much difference between twenty yards and forty yards. I do shoot some form of domed pellets as they seem to work best at all distances.

Yea I guess that would be helpfull.
Shooting a Benji Titan and Mayhem, both shoot quite similar velocites.
No wad cutters, I tried CPDUM's, H&N FTT, JSB Jumbo heavys. The best was 'still' the H&N.
It is probably the faulty optical component behind the scope ;)

Interesting.
The other day I was shooting my gun that was sighted in at 10yds on 3 pumps at 40 ft, with the extra 10 ft the shots were all over the place.
Bumped it up to 4 pumps and it was back to one ragged hole.
I know it's not exactly the same thing, but there was a number 10 involved and I did loose accuracy beyond d the distance I was sighted in for.

When I first started to stretch the yardage out with break barrels. it was frustrating, now that I look back at all the obstacles I had to overcome. One thing I did to help was shoot at lower magnification to smooth out the scope jitters one can encounter while trying to hold on target.

Well I shot the Titan again this afternoon and things went a little better. I started out at 15 yards to double check the scope and started grouping and hitting a 1" target pretty consistently, that is when I made a 'good' shot. Within 2" groups except for the occasional 'flyer' It was kind of windy too.
I narrowed the problem I am having to two things, neither of which is the gun or the optics. First is trigger discipline. Evidently the Titan is extremely touchy on the trigger pull. It is very easy to jerk the trigger and throw off a shot.
I have a GRTIII trigger on it, and it is 'two stage' sort of but the second stage is a tad unpredictable and I end up pulling it instead of squeezing it. I wish I could soften the second stage pull some.
The other thing is shouldering.
Anyhow I will continue to practice and quit blaming the tools.

LOL I was going to mention the trigger, It takes me a few warm up shots to adjust to the like of hitting a brick wall on then Crosman triggers.

Every time an extra 10 yards are added the curvature of the earth and rotational speed need to be considered.

Don’t forget atmosphere, gravity, loose screws and the dreaded “coffee jitters” ;D
Joking aside, I have noticed the impact of coffee and tiredness on my ability to stay on target - perhaps he was just tired.

"COFFEE " did someone mention coffee? Maybe that's my problem. Seems like 99% of the time I'm shooting I always have a freshly brewed cup of coffee. I had rather miss the target than give up my coffee. I'm a 8-12 cup a day kinda guy.

I'm with you there.
I was out shooting the Titan at 33 yards yesterday. Lets just say it's pretty frustrating. I was doing pretty well hitting 2" targets 90% of the time. Then I took a short break, left the gun resting on the bag not leaning against anything. Came back like 10-15 minutes later, took a shot, and it was like 6" lower than my previous POA where I was staying within 2".
The only thing I can think of was I changed the shouldering pressure. Nothing else had change. Maybe the gun / scope got warmer. Whatever. Re-zeroed the scope.... again and started shooting fairly well. But still inconsistent, struggling to stay within the 2" circles.
I dont think it is the gun. the ammo, the optics, just that the Titan is extremely sensitive to the hold and trigger action so that any slight deviation from the 'ideal' ends up in my chasing the zero around... again.

I had something similar but not to that extreme, yesterday I was shooting my Hatsan Edge and I was using a front rest only and was having some difficulty keeping the crosshairs steady, so I started using a rear rest well I was rock steady but then I noticed that my dime size groups were now inch and a half groups. What happened? I was steady, great trigger control, excellent breath control.....should be one hole groups. Well I went back to just the front rest and Immediately my groups went back to dime size. Weird.
