Title: HW50 S .177 here with my HW50 .22
Post by: fwbsport on April 17, 2019, 04:52:47 PM
The .177 came yesterday a day ahead of time and I shot it a couple times realizing the power level was just exactly what I wanted between the R7 and the Feinwerkbau Sport.  Leverage to cock is just right.  So is recoil.  The trigger is just like the .22 model--as is everything else except this one HAS extra sight inserts to choose from (my .22 HW 50 did not).

Thing is whether it has the extra sights or not both models are stamped on the barrel and box as HW 50 without lettering after.  So they are exact guns as far as the mysterious "S" mentioned or not.

The rifle took longer for me to sight in because I did not check the stock screws--they were not tightened in all the way.  Once I did that the .177 HW50 continued to ring my field targets with 1" bull's eyes.  Sights were dialed too far left but that was easily fixed AFTER tightening the screws!

The weight and balance of either is perfect for me.  I am 190 lbs and 6' 2".  Either rifle is easy to shoot off-hand or with any kind of rest position you have time for.
I can say constant use makes strong arms--leverage will fatigue over so many cocks within so many seconds.

I tried out all the globe sight inserts and used the slender straight post, which for me works the best without a scope.
Since I have a scope on my .22 HW50 I know the difference in balance now without a scope.  I prefer the HW50 without a scope for convenience of immediate and fast accuracy over parallax and cross-wire referencing.  This may sound backward but to me these models work their best in simplicity of sights--the ones issued.

Accuracy testers will of course mount glass to be precise but for me I am more precise without glass on an air rifle.  I actually miss more with a scope that without and this is because of sensed and seen wobble.  Seeing wobble makes me tight and avoiding the appearance of large wobble the iron sights keep my eyes on exactly where they are aligned.

I have shot Diablo Domes, Crow Magnums, H&N Match, Crossman Premiers (10.5gr) without naming others I have around too--there doesn't seem to be much difference where the lead goes except for elevation.  I can use the iron sights to know where the elevation is for the lighter ones and especially the 10.5gr CPs.

What I really want for BOTH these rifles is a rear sight with a rubber hood that presses against the sighting eye to eliminate light and glare.  I've seen these sights before on an old HW 55 I had.  If I can still get that hooded rear peep sight with folding rubber against the shooting eye I will!

Now the last test is time.  Which caliber will shoot longer or last longer or do longer?  I have no idea, but the .22 HW50 has about 500 rnds ahead of the new .177 HW50.

Packaging note:  This came without any damage.  The HW50 .177 cocking is slightly more resistant than with the HW50 .22.  I can attribute this to the .22 having a head start in use.

I realized today that the two rifles are the only two same models in different caliber in my entire gun collection.
In other words, the HW50 is the only rifle worth having two of! ;)

Great short term review John.Looking forward to an after 500 shot review.Ive got about 1400 on mine in .177 and shoot it with the slender straight post also.Mine was scoped when it was in stock form but for only a short time as the scope a utg 4x32ao went south and would not hold zero. That scope had over 3000 rounds on another springer I once had.

I said on another post that its to close to tell which pellet it prefers with open sights at 20 yards.Jsb 8.4,h&n ftt 8.6 and crosman premier all shoot around nickel size 5 shot groups.I like the reliability shooting it open sight which cuts out any issue with barrel and scope alignment but I will scope it one day just to see how accurate it can be.At my previous 12 yards scoped it was one ragged hole well under a dime and now that I have 20 yards im curious because with open sights I have done a few dime size groups.Enjoy your new gun.

I thank all for your responses!  This one from Airwoods is most helpful--I pulled out my broken-in .22 and found it was much smoother and so I ended up shooting it along with the .177 back and forth.  The .22 is extremely accurate right now and it has a Leupold VXII 3-9X w/parallax adjusted to 27 yards, where my Field Targets are.  I can hit the irons easier with the sighted in .22 with its scope than with the opensighted .177 right now, and I am thinking of adding the identical scope to the .22 I have to the .177.

Last night I decided to take the identical scope off the Ruger Mini 14 and put another on it I have.

I also have identical mounts!  I think it's already time to see what happens when both are identically scoped (I had ordered these two air rifle scopes from StraightShooters about 10 years ago--I keep all my scopes and not always all my rifles!

Hey Sport, I would beg to disagree ;D,
How about:
1) BSA-R10
2) HW30S
3) HW35E
4) HW50S
5) QB-78HPA
6) QB-79HPA

You won't find any Weihrauch stamped with an "S" after the model number. What makes them an S version is simply having a Rekord trigger (AFAIK).

Great review, thanks. Now you have me interested in an HW50, as if I need another Wiehrauch!!  ::)

Dennis,
Get two Weihrauch's at a time from Krale (like I use to) and save $40 on shipping.  That's the sweet spot when ordering from them.  Get a HW95, HW80 or HW77K if U don't already have one ;).

After reading all the HW50s praises recently, I now have that little voice in the back of my head saying I need one and I must say a .22 sounds interesting to me.

How do you experience the pellet trajectory between .177 and .22 up to lets say 30 yards ?
