Title: laminate stocks, what woods look great?
Post by: ZzyzxJoshua on July 23, 2011, 04:35:11 PM
In seeing the HW blue laminate stock where blue and gray are interspaced, how do you figure what wood species to use?

My guess is those are pre-dyed beech, that being an excellent, though plain, air gun stock wood.  If you are really handy with woodworking tools (and I ain't), you could check with Richards Micro-fit Stocks (think that's the company) for blanks.  Some of the rimfire blanks should do well and stain nicely for some pretty (and pretty) wild colors.

Oh, and check here.  Someone dyed their Chinese stock green and it came out great!

I read somewhere that the laminates are pre dyed birch. Not sure about that.Boyds Gunstocks are a little cheaper.

i would think that they are birch or poplar. most likely birch though. I also think that thin layers of dyed glue that laminates the plys together is the cause for the grain look. as wood is removed and/or carved away it creates those grain-like shapes/lines

Boyds gun stocks is another place to look. They carry laminated blank stocks and also uninleted stocks.

yeah boyds are cheap as heck. wow. I've been pondering ordering one or two of those blanks. We could do that for your stock gene. lol

The Boyds stocks look interesting. Looks like the basic Rifle blank could be used to make a thumbhole stock. Am I correct on this?

As for checking with an internet search, with GTA available it never entered my mind.

yeah, well realistically, you could make any kind of stock with the blank, as long as it fit within the diameters of the blank.. it'd be a cheap way for someone with the proper tools to try making a stock.
