I just got my first FWB 65 after wanting one for a long time. Got it today and tried it out over my chrony. I was getting around 440fps with RWS Hoobys. I did notice though that the seal inside the breach seemed to be degraded and was shedding around the barrel end. There were very tiny pieces around the end of the barrel too. I assume I should stop shooting it. The stop under it was degraded also. The seal and the stop at the bottom of the breach appear to be leather or some light colored material and I assume they are original. My question is does the gun have to be disassembled to replace them? Is it really complicated? I'm fairly handy resealing Crosmans and Daisys but not sure about tackling this. Would the seal kit from PA. be a good choice. If I decide to have it gone over and new seals put in, who would be a good choice. The serial number is 72xxx so I'm assuming it's pre 1975?

If the seals are leather they need oils to swell them back up. Don't shoot them if they are dry. Just do a search on the type oil to use.

Not sure if they are leather but the seam to be falling apart. I think I may just send it to Airgunwerks and to have them check everything over and reseal it and maybe add a new main spring. Or is there anyone else who does this work that someone could recommend? I don't mind paying a little more for good quality work.

I bought the spring, buffer, breech seal and bumper for my 80 on e bay. The seller is out of Canada and sells genuine FWB replacement parts. If I were to send my pistol out for work it would go to Scott Pilkington at Pilkington Competition.

These pistols are not hard to work on. You can get the parts you need directly from Feinwerkbau. You'll need the piston buffer and the breech seal (that's the part you can see when you cock the pistol).
Go to this page and click on the link for the 65.

That will give you the exploded parts view. There you can see the various seals, springs, etc. You'll want 1600.122.3 and 1600.124.3 which are the breech seal and piston buffer. If you want to do a full blown reseal/respring/restoration of the pistol then order the spring and the piston ring as well. These pistols seal with a car engine like piston ring made of steel instead of the usual synthetic or leather seal. To do a complete job then you can order part number 1600.127.3 and 1500.126.3 (spring and piston seal) When reassembling do NOT use any lubrication as these were designed to run dry, or you might purchase some of FWB's special grease or perhaps use Krytox.
Make up the list of parts you need and email them to info@feinwerkbau.de They'll get back to you with a quote on cost including shipping. I just put in an order for parts for my basket case FWB 300 S with left hand tyrolean stock. Very painless procedure and you're getting original parts from the folks that made the pistol, usually for the same or even less money than third parties sell them for.

Thanks Paul, I got the seals from Pyramyd and will give it a try. If I mess it up I can always send it out I guess. I like to be able to do this stuff my self.

I had to cut an allen wrench down to remove the grip frame way back when. Other than that, the disassembly/reassembly is pretty straight forward. The c-clips are all standard metric sizes so not a problem to source if you loose one. Pay attention to which screw goes where when disassembling as they are different lengths. Let us know how it goes.

Does anyone know if the breach seal can be replaced without disassembling the gun?

There are no leather parts in the FWB pistols.

It'd be a pain to get to, but in theory, yes. You need to be able to extract the old one. Then the new one is just pressed into place. If the old one is crystallized then it'll be a bear to get out of there. Also, if the breech seal is crystallized then you can just about guarantee that the piston buffer inside is also. The "piston seal" itself is a steel ring, like a ring on a car's piston. The rubber piece at the front of the piston is a buffer to absorb any impact of the piston at the end of the compression tube. Anyway, good practice for longevity would be to disassemble the pistol for a good cleaning and to reassemble it with a new breech seal and piston buffer. If one is needing replaced the other one's probably on its way out too and then you'll need to dig into it again if you don't replace them both at once.

To reinforce points already made above:
Paul is correct - if the breech seal and piston buffer are of equal age, they probably both need to be replaced.
A very good source for parts is Nikkonos in Canada. They are a big Ebay seller and very reliable in my experience.
If you don’t want to do the work yourself, Dave Slade (Aigunwerks) and Pilkington, both in Tennessee, are both excellent.

I think I am just going to call Monday and arrange to have it done. The pistol is in excellent condition cosmetically and I don't want to mess it up. Now I have to find some lefty or ambi grips. Anybody know of a source? I checked with Vernon Austin but he doesn't do those.

If you go with Pilkguns, they MIGHT know of some. I picked up a 300S trigger guard from them recently. There's no telling what they have on the premises unless you ask.

There are lefty factory grips out there. Keep an eye on the classifieds and auction sites, they will turn up. Better yet, put a “wanted” ad up yourself.
Both sport style and adjustable-palmshelf match grips were made for the 65 by the way, the latter in several sizes.

Well I replaced the seals today. I decided to tackle it myself. Went pretty well and everything went back together with no issues. Shooting one hole at 24ft.(limit of my indoor range). Shooting JBS match 7.33gr. in the low 440s fps. very consistently. What a sweet shooting pistol.

Great! Glad to hear it. There's nothing quite like the satisfaction of doing it one's self and having it all come together. Congratulations!
