Anyone casting anything that shoots well in stock Airforce .25 barrel?
-
This one sized down to .254 has been doing very well in my Condor. If I do my part I am getting nice groups at 50 yards. Rifle is pushing them around 900fps.

I ordered this mold this weekend since the had their sale.

Waiting on it to arrive this week.
The 253-60-FN-BP4 bullets did not perform as well as the 260-63-FN-AR4 in my rifle. Decent but not as quiet as good.

Well, you already know what these are doing. ;) The barrel was taken directly out of a condor and fitted to the RS II. 8)

Those look nice! Did you try any smaller size than that, eg .253-250?

Actually, did not realize that.....must have missed that about the AF barrel!

I have tried a few sized to .253 and the groups opened up just a little. I tried some of the 253-60-FN-BP4 sized from .250 to .254 and the smaller sizes did not group as well. My barrel slugged at .254 for what it's worth.
-
Ok, didn’t realize they would slug that large so that makes sense. I had sold my .257 Condor but in wanting a 100 +/- fpe shooter, wondering if I can get there with a new Condor in .25 as I still have some accessories like .22 bbl, etc.
-
Absolutely, you can easily top 120fpe with a new stock Condor in .25. I use this mold sized to .250 with good results:
http://noebulletmolds.com/NV/product_info.php?cPath=554_475&products_id=3632&osCsid=5ts0vemhut0g7etqs8ri7u9qt0 (http://noebulletmolds.com/NV/product_info.php?cPath=554_475&products_id=3632&osCsid=5ts0vemhut0g7etqs8ri7u9qt0)
My brother’s Condor is a 2018 model and easily does over 120fpe. My 2016 Condor does close (at one point I thought it did get to 120fpe but I hadn’t weighed the bullets, the 65 gr mold works out to 60 gr with my alloy). My gun will shoot the 60 gr at 920fps, his will throw them faster than 950fps and for more shots.
-
My testing so far has shown that .2495 and .250 both do well. One of the bullets is best at .251. So nothing is set in stone each bullet has to be tested to see what the gun and bullet likes best. ;)

I certainly figure some individual attention is going to be necessary ;D Im glad to see that these barrels and platform lend themselves to not only shooting slugs, but with authority!

Yep, and by putting a Dyotat10 valve in, it hit over 170 fpe first shot. And only went up from there. 8)

Wow. Gotta get me that mold. .254 was best?

Knife, what molds are those again?

The other is 257420 decked to second band to fit magazine. NOE has a copy of that mold in both plain base and gas check. 260-63-FN. Says it can be HP'd too but doesn't have image of HP.

Yes, sized to .254 was best in my rifle. I size to .257 and then down to .254. I have sized the .254 down to .253, .252, and .251 and the groups open up.

Slim picking through NOE 8) I wonder if I get something this is 250 whether it will be too small.....................I can hope it drops at least 251, maybe?
-
Prouzy, either of the 63 grain 257 molds should do fairly well . I wouldn’t bother with a smaller mold as you would be stuck if they were to drop too small. Ebay also has the odd .257 mold come up .

I agree, seeing as I dont have the barrel yet to slug it, could also come in too large. The .257 would also be good for if/when I add a .257 bbl. I just did not want to size down too much, but maybe I wont have to go too far.

So ordered an Airforce.........TalonP .25 yesterday. Here is my logic (actually, I seem to have very little logic, more of justification, whim, fancy, etc ;D ), first was that Ive always wanted to try the P, even though Im not much of a pistol guy but also makes a nice little carbine; second is that it is the same valve and bottle as an escape, which is same valve as a condor, and will achieve similar performance with same bbl length, sans the shot count; third is that I intend to make modification as soon as I shoot a bunch of .25 pellets I have laying around to include higher pressure bottle, so the condor bottle was not needed; and finally, with my existing very accurate 24" .22 bbl, the addition of a 24-30" either .25 or .257 barrel, additional bottle (and likely some additional hammer and springs) and its existing configuration, should keep me entertained for awhile 8)
Obviously I wont get the same performance from a 12" in 25cal, but I wonder if I should get a 24" Airforce .25 (which are nice bbls in their own right) or go to .257? One can get the AF LW 24" 25cal barrel for approx $188 shipped from PA. If I recall, Carl (rifle50) had some pretty beefy barrels in his .257, but I do not remember the OD. I will be able to measure the frame when it arrives, but in purusing the Green Mountain website last night, they have some great prices on some turned blanks. Im not a smith, so not sure how much of a pain it would be to bring down to the OD of the Airforce breech but I thought it might be intersting to split the difference between the .224 and .257 and go .243........just for kicks. Seems to be a few molds out there...........

Sounds fun :) I have the Escape UL 18" .22 unchoked barrel making a solid 90 FPE with 50 gr. African Air Ordnance slugs. That's is with stock valves and an o-ring buffer on it still. Also have the stock .25 barrel I will have to swap out and test NOE
40 gr. BBT HP in yet.

Holy cow James, thats awesome in .22! Basically this will be an Escape when I put a long barrel on it. Are you casting or purchasing those AAO slugs?
-
I purchased various slugs from AAO before slugs were readily available in the states, now I am a caster, Using NOE molds ;)
