I just ordered some Krytox GPL 205. I am going to install a Vortex PG2 kit in a Ruger Air Magnum. Normally I use the molly paste on all the metal contact parts, the spring the piston etc. In the past I have used the 100% silicone grease just on the synthetic piston seals. I am not sure if the Krytox GPL 205 can be used instead of the molly on the other parts, meaning the piston, spring etc? I do know prior to using the Krytox the surface needs to be clean and petroleum free.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated :)

Yes you can use krytox on all metal to metal parts. I myself use moly past but the krytox is believed to be a better lube for metal to metal contact. Make sure that you have everything super clean. As far as the piston seal goes. The vortex seal is moly impregnated and is self sizing and self lubing so there is no need to apply krytox on it. Just a light coat of silicone oil to aid in installation.
Make sure that you remove all sharp edges on the compression tube and rear of piston. Keep in mind that when compressing the spring that you be carefull not to snag the plastic guide on the rear of the piston skirt because it will damage the guide. When compressing the spring you can look into the coking slot and see if you are centered and that the guide is going into the back of the piston without binding. And last but not least take your time installing the piston into the compression tube. Their is a lot of edges that can nick the seal if not prepped properly.
I installed a vortex kit in my air magnum and love it.

Oh I forgot to tell you. Check the bottom of the cocking arm shoe for any roughness. I always polish mine so it doesn’t gouge the guide and make sure it is well lubed too.

I use Krytox as well, but I like to burnish molybdenum disulfide POWDER into the compression tube. Krytox plays fine with the powder but not moly lube as the lube is petroleum based.

I put the Krytox on everything. Piston seal, spring, pivot points,... Works great and I use no other lube with it.

Thank you for the responses. I contacted Mike Melick today, FDA, he likes the Krytox but thought it might be a little light for the magnum springer. He likes the tar, aka molly. I ordered the larger tube of Krutox so I think I might just try it on everything. Has anyone used it solely on a Magnum springer?

Tar and moly lube are not the same product. Tar is normally used to damp spring vibration. It may have some lubricating properties but mainly it's kind of a thick sticky grease like substance - think axle grease. Moly lube is a lubricant. It consists of (hopefully) sixty percent or more molybdenum disulfide powder in a base of some sort of oil. The moly is the lubricant, the oil keeps it bound as it's a very fine dust on its own. I have no idea what Krytox would not be strong enough to do that moly lube or tar or whatever would do better or be stronger.

When I tuned my .177 Diana D460 I used the Ultimox (same as Krytox) on all moving components including the piston seal. I also burnished the interior of the compression tube and applied a very thin coating of the Ultimox grease and the rifle shoots smooth and solid since I installed the Vortek kit 4 years ago.

A few years ago I switched from diesel prone petroleum based molly lubes to non-dieseling Dupont Krytox lubes and there is no need to return to the "molly bearing stuff". LOL....the molly paste and tars also tend to thicken and "dry out" with time as the petroleum carrier "out gasses", even sitting in a sealed container. Here is the remains of a tub of "heavy tar" that dried out enough to support a socket head cap screw on the rim of the container with only a couple "half threads" embedded in the thickened tar.........

Anywhoo....... When I was using molly lubes years ago I found that molly paste that had become "thick over time" could be reconstituted by adding a bit of mineral oil, however I haven't had any such issues using Dupont Crytox "space station lubes". I also use the Krytox oils for lubing parts that can't be easily disassembled for applying the grease (like the barrel pivot linkage pins".........
