Title: Benjamin Prowler
Post by: truck driver on March 15, 2019, 04:16:20 PM
Hi all;
New to the GTA and have been wanting a starter air rifle. Since I don't know if I'm going to like them or not I don't want to drop a ton of money on one and have been considering a Benjamin Prowler .22 for my back yard pest.
So my question is are they a good starter rifle and what is the skinny on them good bad or indifferent?

I suggest you start out on YouTube with a list of rifles to type in. The late Kenny Kormendy of ‘My Airgun reviews' YouTube’s channel has a great review on the prowler and a few other budget guns.

The Prowler is a member of the Crosman - Benjamin Nitro Piston Chinese B19 family.  Stocks vary, included stuff may vary, some have dovetail scope mounts while others have Weaver, some have open sights while others do not. At the heart of it is the same basic gun.  The gun is not really that bad but the trigger is AWFUL!!  Figure on immediately going to charliedatuna.com and purchasing a GRT III trigger.  There are workarounds but I feel the GRT III is the safest way to go.  I paid $150 for my Nitro Venom (same basic gun) and could not really shoot it until I replaced the trigger.  There is a lot of other optional stuff you can do to that gun but the trigger should be your first item of consideration.  By the way, nobody but NOBODY provides warranty coverage to even begin to touch Crosman.

The Crosman NP series is a pretty good place to start. I second the CDT trigger. I would look for one with a Picatinny rail over the dovetail. Much more secure mount system.

Of you want to start out a bit cheaper you can go with the Crosman F4. About 75.00 at walmart and an excellent starter gun. It is .177 so if the past are bigger that may influence your decision.
