Title: How many fills?
Post by: Cjs180 on March 11, 2019, 10:53:40 PM
Any idea how many fills I could fill my discovery 2000 psi with a paintball fill tank?  Sorry rookie question.

Thanks Chris

Zero, because most paintball tanks only have an 850 psi output....

Aren't paintball tanks 4500 psi air tanks?

You need to know how many cubic feet,  or cc is the paintball tank, and how many PSI is the paintball tank.  Then you need to know how many cc's is the reservoir on the Discovery.
I think that you fill a stock Discovery to 2000 PSI, but you will need to just guess what pressure you will shoot it down to. You will learn that later when you understand the shot cycle of the Discovery better.
If you have a paintball tank in mind, then post the size and max fill pressure for more help.
HTH.

Like Bob said.... Paintball tanks are regged to 850 psi. They won't fill your gun past 850 psi unless you change the output of the regulator.

On a side note....
When calculating fills, many folks forget to factor in the fill hose capacity. Every time you bleed the hose off you will lose the volume of air in that hose.

I saw a paintball tank on Craigslist that was 68 cu in.  My discovery has a 135cc fill tank.  It shoots best from about 1800 down to 1200.  Going by the calculator that was posted earlier I should be able to get around 23 fills if I only pump the tank up to 3500 psi.

It sounds like a paintball tank would not work anyway as they are regulated at 850 psi.

I did find a couple of used scuba tanks on craigslist for $100 each but I have no idea how many years are left on them.

"Paintball" tank is too generic a term to work with. Since you mention a 68 ci  tank in the last post, it's most likely a 4500 psi tank.  If you're hand pumping,  plan on a few hundred pump strokes, over several sessions to fill it. You should also have a desiccant filter on the pump inlet.  If you plan on having the tank filled commercially, keep in mind that the tank would need to have a current hydro, and not be expired.

Anyone have an idea what the cost is to re-certify a scuba tank?

Assuming you do get a 4500 psi 68 CI tank, you will also need a proper slow fill valve with gauge, bleed valve, hose and female Foster connector.... Do NOT try and get away with an ASA style valve that pushes the pin valve open, or a slide check.... They are not designed to be used at those pressures....

Thanks, if I do go that route I will buy the proper parts to make it work.  I saw there was a sticky on here about how to do it and where to purchase parts from.

Anyone have an idea what the cost is to re-certify a scuba tank?
When I had my scuba tanks filled in Ozark, Al. at the dive shop Mr. George would charge me $12 for a yearly visual check. This included the tank being filled. He would charge me $25 for the 5 year hydro check. This also included the tank being filled. The hydro tests were done off sight requiring me to leave the tank. Mr. George would give me a loaner tank to use. When the loaner tank needed a refill I would just exchange it for my tank back.
Then again, Mr. George only charged me $4.95 to fill my tanks. The problem was, it was an 80 mile round trip from my home.
Mr. George was an 88 year old diving instructor that had been in business nearly all his life. He finally closed up his shop last year and retired. (SeaDivers) I enjoyed many hours sitting and talking to Mr. George Perez about his life and adventures. He had many, many artifacts on display in his shop that he recovered over the years. He knew where and when he recovered each of them.
I dearly miss Mr. George. They just don't make em like that anymore.
