Title: Tell me about the Texan!!
Post by: Jeremy1982 on March 09, 2019, 11:22:02 AM
Ok I have been seriously considering buying a texan,Leaning towards the .457!Reason is I plan to hunt deer with it and I have two .357 already,I also have a 909s (.457) and a Extreme .457 aswell!Do I need another gun....NOPE!Do I want one...YEP!lol.I have the low and high between the 2 in both cal.!My Recluse will throw 115 gr about 950 fps and my Badger with .357 and a few other swaps will throw a 150 gr around 950.My 909s throws 200 gr at 850 fps and my Extreme throws 330 gr at 850 fps.My point is Im looking for consistency!!!Any of my guns will and have taken many deer, but you always find that situation where the happy medium( and I think its in the texan beings the Hammer seems to be a unicorn)Is just right!Ive had tons of times where I have said "I should have brought the other one".Last year I was wanting a few does to fill the freezer so I took my 909s cause Im good for 4 shots, had 3 come threw the bottom at 70 yards and I kept saying "I wish I had the extreme .457".I have and will take 70 yard shots with the 909s but the situation has to be right and it wasnt!Wind effects a 180 gr a lot more then a 330 gr for starters.Next day I take the Extreme and had 9 come out on me and same spot...drop one and well....the 2nd shot on theses have about a 90 fps difference so I never tried at that range.I tried to do the math on the drop in my head with the nikon bdc but they moved on by that point!!SO...my question is....WHATS THE CONSISTENCY LIKE,ACCURACY LIKE<SHOT COUNT LIKE!Id love to hear the pros and cons of them!I have a Escape thats 257 and love it.Hope I can find it in a bigbore

Jeremy
Stick with your Extreme and carry a guppy tank in your backpack.   A no brainer
 Texans are long and cumbersome

I have the ss in .45 and it will put a hole in a aluminum frying pan at 35 yards with a 340 grain.

Tune the Extreme for 2 equal shots by reducing the hammer strike.... The velocity difference will be minimal, likely only a few fps.... You may even be able to get a 3-shot bell-curve within a 1-2% ES, and have a backup 4th shot about the same as what your 2nd shot is now.... That's what happened to my DAQ .308 Exile once I tuned it properly.... I got 5 shots within a 4% ES, and the 5th shot after tuning was faster than the 2nd shot was the way it came.... ::)

It seems most Big Bore manufacturers insist on tuning for the Korean Cliff, just so they can claim an extra few FPE....

I have a spring that gives me a tight Avrg. 3 shots within 40 fps but the harmonics are all over the place.Ill get 1st shot high..2nd 8 inch low then 3rd one 2 inch low from the 1st shot.plus no meter on the extreme along with no safety.I love the Extreme Ive just sorta given up on making it more then a 1 shot gun.Maybe I need to go at it one more time!

My used standard .45 texan gets three good shots with home cast bullets from the lee 340-f mold. My scale is busted so I do not know the weight, lee says 340gr with whatever alloy they use. Mine are cast in pure lead so they would be heavier than that. A three shot string was 764, 756, 742. I have not tuned it at all, it is the way it was when I got it. I think the hammer spring preload needs to be backed off a bit, it is pretty close to maxed out. I did not have time before deer season to mess with it and it was accurate enough so I left it. Ended up not having anywhere to hunt anyway lol

I have only shot out to 50 yards. When I had a place to hunt shots were close so I did not need to shoot farther. I have never bothered to measure groups so I do not really know how. I have attached a photo of a 50 yard group with a caliper for reference.

The length of the texan dose not bother me much. I have hunted with some very long barreled shotguns and rifles. I don't have any thing extra stuck on the end of it to add length. if you want a moderator I'd suggest a texan ss. A moderator or shroud on a standard texan would make it so long that I doubt you could even find a case for it.

I no longer have a stock 45Texan, mine has had the valve reworked by a master airsmith who specializes in Air Force guns but just to show the potential here are my numbers.

Bottle is a 3600 PSI capable carbon fiber TalonTunes. {NOTICE TO IDIOTS - Do NOT overfill the factory aluminium bottle or you will probably someday kill yourself}
The hanmmer spring is custom by the airsmith (NOT AfricanAirOrdance)

.457 sized 327gr BTHP (modified BBT style), FP10 lubed,  Fill:. 3500
881, 855, 820, 784(2000PSI)
880FPS/560FPE

.457 290gr FBHP NSA, same lube n fill
911, 879, 842, 796(2000 PSI)
910FPS/533FPE

.457 254gr BTHP NSA, same lube n fill
953, 929, 883, 841(2000 PSI)
950FPS/508FPE

Note that I use an 85 yard zero on all my big bores and use Mildot scopes.
Ex: 85 zero: @50= +2.76;  @100= -2.95; @150=. -21.5
See the +3, -3 at 50 and 100? Makes it easy to switch from big bore to big bore and have a fairly STD trajectory to remember.

Note: all three of these will do less than 3/4" OR SMALLER at 50, including the 'mandatory' flier. In fact, at 100 the average group is under 1.75.
Mot match but good enough to put one in the boiler room on a deer or hog hunt.

[Round ball = 5" @ 50yd always]
