My new 1701P Silhouette Pistol review from day one.
The lack of info on this "high end" Crosman pistol is amazing to say the least. It seems to be a preferred "donor" for it's trigger group is what you will find, but it comes with an LW barrel and the acclaimed trigger, plus a lot of other upgrades.... so I wanted one for my own to try out.
I hope this review helps others in the future.
After liking what little I read on the interwebz, I went ahead and ordered one from Crosman direct and here is why.
PA shows the gun listed at $399.95, as a discount of the list price of $429.95 HERE (https://www.pyramydair.com/product/crosman-silhouette-pcp-air-pistol?m=2469)
Mother Crosman website on the other-hand has an MSRP of $374.95! HERE (https://www.crosman.com/1701p-silhouette-pcp-pistol-177) (Don't know where PA got their info but oh well).
I purchased it direct from Crosman on "Free Shipping Friday" and entered the 25% off "AGNATION" coupon code and got it for $300 shipped to my door. :-\
On Friday I got an order Confirmation. Now, Take out Saturday and Sunday weekend. Monday I got an order Shipped with tracking info. Today, Wednesday, the pistol was delivered and shortly after I got a delivery conformation email. WOW!
The pistol arrived double boxed and the inner box has egg crate foam to protect the contents... NICE!
My only qualm is on the outer box side was a sticker that said "PISTOL, 1701P, SILHOUETTE" and the top was the factory sticker with the GUN SPECS. So ANY unscrupulous employee at UPS could plainly see what the contents was and claimed "lost it in shipping". Fortunately, that was not the case for me.
Upon unpacking, I was pleasantly surprised to find not only the BEAUTY pistol, well preserved in oil...but a 25yrd "Proof Target" of 5 shots in a keyholed pattern.
I have only seen this on my high end target rifle purchases... I understand now this is what Crosman believes it is slated to be.It arrived with 1000psi on the gauge. I do not know what they ship them out with but to me this is a good sign of no leaks.
Tonight I am going to "clean her up" with a rub down on the exterior surfaces with Breakfree CLP on a cloth and clean the barrel with "Goo-Gone" then plenty of dry swabs. Then I will mount the Cocobolo wood CCS grips I have waiting for her and the BSA Edge 2X20 scope.
Good times ahead!

Very nice looking pistol.
-
Very cool, watching with interest.
I know I asked before but I will ask again for future readers. How many shots per fill?
-
Reports are 60-70 with no loss of FPS or accuracy. I will let you know for sure when I get there.
So I cleaned her up, pulled a goo-gone swab through and it came out clean so 5 dry ones followed.
I mounted my Alchemy Airwerks match sites and the wood grips and took a few off hand shots.
Aired it up to 1600psi from the Joe B regged bottle I have and noticed the on board gauge only read 1300. This reg has been very accurate so I believe it over the Crosman Manometer.
This gun is Quiet, Accurate, and I see I have my work cut out for me to get close in matching its level.
The first two shots were high but I was able to zero in consecutively to towards the center.
Keep in mind this is my first attempt at 10m single off-hand pistol shooting. ::)
-
That sure is a sweet looking gun Scott. Enjoy!
-
Nice pistol, good luck with it!
I moved your thread to the Airgun Review Gate.

Very nice, where did you get the grips?
Why those sights over the Williams Notched Sight?
Awaiting to see if you get 60 shots out of a fill.
-
Hang in there.
1-hand AP shooting takes a bit of learning to get down.
hint: Get the shot off in about 5-6 seconds. The longer you hold the worse the wobble gets, and the more tired your arm gets.
And rest between shots sets. You have 90 minutes to do 60 record shots, which is plenty of time.

Mark, those Grips are CCS units I got on a 2300KT a while back.
Sadly no longer an option.... but there are other nice ones available.
I went with that sight because I had it in the spare parts bin from my first 13XX build. :P
AC... I remembered you saying that, if I did not get a good sight picture in the first 5 seconds, I lowered the pistol took a few breaths and tried again.
Your advise was very helpfull.

Learning to abort a shot was the hardest thing that I had to learn. It's all in the head.
Shooting by comparison was easy.

Wow Scott......Very Nice Pistol !!! ;)
Best Wishes - Tom

Thanks sir, I appreciate the info. Nice looking gun for sure.
I wish someone would make a set of Herret style 19911 camp Perry grips, with a shelf on the non thumb panel. I'll dig mine out sometime and post an image. It would help the 10m crew using this pistol for that.

Told you so.
The $375.00 price that Crosman lists used to be the most a air pistol could cost for NRA sanctioned Sillouette matches. If I remember correctly..
-
Yes you did Frank, and I thank you for that!
Tonight I plan on spending some more quality time with it.
Shot count and accuracy off the bag,
My right shoulder is feeling sore today... obviously used to this type of use. :-X
-
VERY successful evening.
I used my hand pump and counted 24 strokes to get it from 1000psi to 3000 on the pump's gauge. The gauge on board the pistol read 2800.
I set up the 10M bench range (AKA: card table in the family room thru the open door to utility room) and got the bag at arms length. Used the 8.2g Meisters.
After 20 shots I came to the realization my eyes are getting too old for iron sights. The gun was capable of groups but I was not, at least repeatedly. So I paused and mounted my BSA 2X20 scope and continued on....
HOLEY COW... what a PISTOL! It was SO easy to zero the scope because each 5 shot group was a large single hole. This thing scoped off the bag is just as accurate as my match rifles.
I recorded the shot count and the pressures shooting it down until the accuracy fell off, sorta, more like the POI lowed but it still grouped well down to 1100psi indicated.
2800- start
2500 - 20
2250 - 40
1900 - 50
1750 - 60
1450 - 70
1100 - 80
So that proved to me this pistol can get 70 usable shots will little to no change in POI, I wish I had a chrony but the power seemed to change very little.
And it is just stinking PURDY too boot!

Scott,
When I am asked what is my most accurate rifle, I say my 1720T pistol.
Now, remember that gauge is sticking out there, un-protected.
It doesn’t like to get bumped around.
You can’t put a 1720T or PRod forearm on it (without modification) because the tubes are different (they are easy to change, BTW.).
You might be able to come up with something else to protect the gauge.
I shot 7.9 cpl in my 1701P although they do not make a nice sharp edged hole.
Try 7.0 RWS too.
BTW They will take out mice at 20 yards too...
-
Thanks Frank!
I was considering picking up a wood 2400 forearm and boring a gauge hole in it. I need to measure the tube diameter on my 1740 (2240) to see if it is even compatible.
But then again, matching the color and grain of these grips might be tough. ::)
-
When Ralph Baker was alive he made me a set of Cocobolos.
The forearm stuck on with very strong tape..
-
Scott, your having way too much fun with that pistol!
I am jealous :D
