Have used True Oil on stocks for years, great finnish, can,t remember where I read someone finishing True oil finnish with Wipe On Poly as final kote. Has anyone tried or heard of this. Just thought I would give it a shot. Mike. Wolfer

Hey Mike,
Lately, I have been using a base coat of Tru-Oil to darken the grain a little, then spray Varathane - clear coat (satin). No problems with the two binding.
I found on real nice grained wood, the Tru-Oil darkened the wood too much (removing color variance) for my taste.

Thanks Kirk for the feedback. I will go ahead and finnish as usual rubbing out with 0000 steel wool and tree wax. Will try on another stock. Thanks again. Mike

I use Tru-Oil until the finish is leveled (i.e., the pores are filled), and then go with poly for added mechanical protection. Poly is tougher than Tru-Oil, so rubbing it out at the end is going to take more effort. Poly is likewise tougher than paint, and will protect camouflage or other graphics.
Poly is also great over bed liner. Successive coats will reduce the grittiness of the bedliner by filling in the low spots between grit particles. By choosing flat, satin, semi-gloss, or gloss poly you can also moderate the reflectivity ("sheen") of the bedliner.

How long should I wait before the wipe on poly. Mike
