Title: Legacy 1000 shooting low how to fix ?
Post by: Blunderbuss on February 10, 2019, 12:32:51 PM
My first gun failed I exchanged it for a new one but this one is shooting low.... I have the elevation on the rear sight all the way up so I can shoot a can at 20 yards... there must be something causing this I was wondering if anybody has any ideas on how I might fix this problem ? ..

Are you shooting with open sights or scoped?  Since the sights are on the barrel if you're shooting open sights this should never be a problem unless the barrel is defective or the velocity is REALLY low.  There are a number of cures if it's scoped including bending the barrel and droop compensating mounts to fix the symptom or finding and fixing the actual cause of the problem.  More information would be good.

Thank you for the info . I'm shooting open sights...on the Last gun .the back sight was much lower . you can see in the pic ,the back sight is set to the max just to shoot straight... the last gun would shoot through a can @20 yards  with 3 pumps. The new gun dos the same.same power just shoots lower..

The piece with the notches is meant to slide forward and back to adjust the height of the rear notch relative to the front blade.  If you take some pressure off the "V" piece you can then slide the notched piece.  Raising the V will require you to raise the front sight to compensate, thus raising your point of impact.  If the front sight can adjust vertically you can get the same effect by lowering it.  I THINK I have my directions correct.  The gun shoots where it's going to shoot.  You adjust the sights so you're looking at the same spot the gun is hitting.  Since your rear sight is at the end of its travel is it possible the barrel is bent slightly down?  Of course if that's the case the cure is to bend the barrel up a bit or get another replacement gun.

If you file the front sight shorter, it will raise ur POI

Should the rear sight be lowered to move the POI up? I was gonna ask about a crown but it’s under warranty.

Lowering the rear sight will further lower the POI.  The front sight must be lowered or the rear sight raised to raise the POI.

Open sights are not mounted on the barrel, they are mounted  on the shroud. I have the 40 year old 766 version of that rifle. When I pulled it out of storage last year it needed new seals and gallon (not really) of oil. I noticed that the barrel SHROUD was bent down quite a bit. Probably during one of the moves over the decades. I was puzzling over what to due when I noticed I could easily BEND it back to what looked normal (from old memory). Rifle shoots well and open sites are roughly centered after I got it restored to working condition. If the new version is similar construction, you don't have to bend the thin barrel, just urge the shroud to a better position (up a little).

Ok got a little confused there. So, maybe somethings not right with the barrel or shroud. Maybe too proud?
