I wanted a open sight rat blaster for less than $200. There are literally SOOO many to choose from.. I am the type that wants something a little different sometimes. So, I chose the Cometa Fenix 400 in .25.
My shooting distance to the rat bait station is only 8.5 yards, so I didn't really need anything big on power. I just wanted it to be a 25, or 30 spring, or gas piston. Hatsans were interesting, but really it was just a flip of a coin decision.
Airforce international has the Cometa for $190. So I bought from their outlet store. Around $225 shipped to my door.
One complaint there. It's literally flopping around in the box. No padding period. I mean I don't really know how it wasn't damaged from shipping. The front sight hood was popped off, but it simply snapped back on. But come on..
Ok, cleaned the barrel, shot a bunch till the dieseling smoke subsided. I must say that everyone was spot on about how smooth the shot cycle is. No twang whatsoever. And after I adjusted the pull weight the trigger is the lightest I've ever shot on any airgun. It breaks like glass clean, but the first stage travel is a bit rough. Then it comes to a firm stop and any more pressure it breaks clean. I'm sure the first stage will wear in with use.
I sighted it in for it's intended purpose, 8.5 yards and it's ragged hole accurate at that close with 26gr crow magnums. It's gonna make a great rat thumper!
I really like the fit/finish, shot cycle is excellent, firm lockup w/smooth cocking, the trigger even with the gritty first stage travel is impressive and the dark walnut is attractive. And I actually feel like a got a bargain! I am getting the Cometa Fusion Premiere Star in 177 next for $209 from AF International. I don't have a 177 Springer and after shooting this Cometa I'm sure it won't disappoint.
630fps with FTT
570fps with Crow mags

I'm glad to hear that you like the Cometa 400 in .25! I bet it feels like a real thumper! I have a Cometa in .22 and really love shooting it at relatively short range using the open sights. I have confidence in the accuracy of the gun and it just is pleasing to use!
The only thing I don't like about the open sights is that the front sight has a rounded profile, like a golf ball on a tee. When the light isn't right for the glowy thingies, the dark sight should still be easy to line up. I'd rather the front sight had a flat top and sides to improve dark sight aiming. I hope they made yours better.
Enjoy and keep us up to date with how you're enjoying the gun, especially with reactive targets! Yogurt container ice blocks are in season.

I know what you mean about the front sight. I think it's the same sorta rounded off tip of the front sight. I haven't had a chance to use it in low light yet.
I put in the order for the fusion star premier .177. I am really liking the shot cycle of these and I think that the mellow power and smooth shot cycle will work out in the 177.
Ill keep you posted after I score a few with the 25.

That front sight with the hood works well with a peep sight , fast target acquisition your eye almost centers by reflex. I have that combination on my BSA Supersport mk2 with a williams sight. fwiw Joe

That's a great looking rifle. I keep thinking about spending some coin on the Cometa 220 Compact from Aceros de Hispania- a .22 would put a smile on my face.

I have had a few Cometa rifles, I have only purchased the compact models with the cans on them when they were available in the U.S. from the Manou Brothers, I still have a Fenix 400 compact in .22cal, I have had a 220 compact in .177cal, and I will say if Cometa has not changed the trigger in this rifle they are horrible!!!!! mine was so bad I tried to polish it up but that only lead to the sears wearing away to the point the gun would fire on its own with out warning!!!!! I gave that rifle to my brother, he tried to buy a replacement trigger unit from Chambers, I don't think he got the right 1 because it wouldn't fit the tube, so this rifle was stored away for several yrs and he has lost about half the parts for the gun accept the stock, barrel with the can on it and the tube, this rifle was vary accurate with 8.44 JSB's, the triggers in the 220 rifles are not the same as the 400 series! the 220 triggers are about the cheapest pot metal junk I have about ever seen on an air gun! but as said I purchased this rifle back in 2011 or 12, maybe Cometa has made some changes? ??? ::)

I have a couple of Fenix 400s They are bit of a sleeper. The trigger is not the same as the video above, It has a true two stage trigger. My ones had a gritty feel, that is because the sears are not smooth or perfectly square as they are stamped. If you tidy them up, then it can be as light and smooth as a German trigger.
-
Yeah, my 400’s first stage travel is pretty gritty, but the second stage is crisp and breaks like glass. There is potential there. I’m thinking it around 8 ounces. Actually way too light. I adjusted the trigger pressure adjustment screw all the way out. Then noticed one day that it had fell completely out, along with the spring. Needs fixing.

I like the Cometa rifles for their price! they are a decently built air gun for what u get, ToR that is a very nice looking rifle u have for sure! ;D

Hey thanks! Yeah, there were so many other AG choices in the realm of what I was looking for, and I guess I’m the type that likes something different. Me and all my buds had the old fox body mustangs and one day I showed up in a camaro. . . Boy, you should’ve seen there faces, lol.
But yeah I read a lot of praise about the cometa fenix line. I’m glad I did get it simply because of the sheer value. The wood is gorgeous and the trigger is actually the lightest trigger I’ve ever could have imagined on a spring gun. Hammer forged barrels. Also, they have a simple barrel change to make it any small cal you want. I think I’ll order up a few other barrels for fun.

I had a few 400's in .177cal and they never shot well! IDK if was the pellets I was using or what but I never had any luck with the .177 in the 400 series :(

I’ve heard the same about the 177’s not being on par like the 22’s

Wow....Very Nice Looking Rifle ! ! !
Happy Hunting Rat With your Cometa Fenix 400 25cal.
Best Wishes - Tom

Thanks. Yea it’s working great for short range. My setup is shooting thru a cracked window at 8.something yards to the bait station. Got a lil bugger last night.
It’s a bit jumpy and definitely needs a special hold to be accurate, I’m guessing because the slow moving 25 is in the barrel for longer than normal. It’s a bit challenging to remember that when you get woke up at 2:30 am from the door dinger. Lol.
But that crow magnum obliterated that lil guy. Blew a nice lil chunk out of em. That was kinda the effect I was looking for in the 25 making sleepy eyed body shots more viable.

sounds like u got what u wanted ;D My .22cal is a bit sensitive as well, I have seen a gas ram conversion for these rifles that I will be looking into ;)
-
I'd be interested to know what gas spring option might be available. When I had mine apart (fenix 400) I measured the length available to be less than needed for a gamo or crosman one.

They have one on their site...

Good to know!!! thanks for the link ;D

I don't think that is for the Fenix 400. The video also does not show swapping a spring for a gas ram.
-
Agreed it doesn't, but the title shows it a Fenix 400, also the link show they do sell the conversion with all the correct parts for a spring conversion, their are other videos on utube that show other videos of spring to gas ram conversion! I hope this helps ??? ;D
