Hi Everyone,
I'm thinking about finally getting a chronograph but don't know what to get. I've never used one before and have only seen them used in airgun review videos. I would like something that I can use outdoor with the ability to buy a lighting unit for indoor use in the future. I want to use it for my powder burners (including muzzleloaders) as well as airguns. A Bluetooth option would be nice but not required. I would like to keep it around $130. Any suggestions? Is the one in the link below any good?

It is according to everyone that owns one and everything is included. I have a Pro Chrono digital and no complaints but light kit (didn't buy one, only shoot outdoors), blue tooth set up (I did, $64.99) and everything else is extra and pretty pricy.
If I had it to do all over again, I'd buy the Caldwell and I'm sure others will say go for it.

Ok, thank you... I'll wait to hear what others say.
-
Go for it. I have the plain old f-1 and it does pretty well no problems. I just put 2 led puck lights on top of light diffusers (1 on each) last night and it worked great! Cheap little 4 led ones, the wife and pups were not happy but I wanted to see if it would work and it did.
-
Thank you. I think I'm going to go for it.
Quick question: how do you avoid shooting your chrony (especially with powder burners)? Reading the reviews I saw that at least a couple of people shot right through it and I don't want to do that :)
-
I use the F1 Chrony made in Canada which is a basic Chronograph with no frills, I scribble down the info I need when shooting over the Chrony. I seldom get a lot of errors and I use a bell shaped trouble light with a 40 watt incandescent bulb in it. You must use the diffuser in doors, it's the only way you'll get them to work right. It's the first that I got so I have no experience with any of the other ones but it's been very reliable as well.
-
I use a ProChrono Digital with a PC connection kit hooked up to a laptop. I save all the date and can print whatever I need.
The Caldwell is pretty good and has also hooks up to your smartphone to record data.
As for NOT shooting the Chrono itself ....... aim carefully! ;) ;D
Cheers

HAven't heard anything negative about the Caldwell. I prefer the Competition Electronics Pro Chrono myself though with the IR light kit.

No matter how careful you are......Ya gonna hit it sooner or later. Or your kid will......and you tell him wow I never shot it!

I've never shot a Chronograph yet . . . . knocking on wood ???

I've never shot a Chronograph yet . . . . knocking on wood ???
Dito!!
I had a buddy that was new to shooting and I loaned him my spare chrony. I gave him what I thought were very good instructions. Showed him how to set it up and use. Explained to him that it was very important to keep every shot in the middle of the chrony for best accuracy. two hours after he left he called me on the phone and said that he could not get it to work.
I then went to his home and you guessed it! He shot it dead center not once but five times. My only reaction was..REALLY Dude!!
Sad but true story!!

Based on everybody's comments, it seems like the keyword here is "YET". :)

"Explained to him that it was very important to keep every shot in the middle of the chrony for best accuracy"... He must be a really good listener :D

I prefer the Competition Electronics Pro Chrono Digital myself with the IR light kit when indoors. It is very user friendly. I have had mine four years now and shoot across it a lot. I have yet to shoot it. It's part of being careful with your equipment. I keep it just a couple feet or less from the muzzle. If out at 25-50 yards, put a brick/board in front of the display. You can look at the numbers later after you are done shooting. I manually enter my data into my spreadsheets, but there are remote capture options for it if desired.
I don't have any experience with the Caldwell. I would compare features between them.

I run a magneto V-3,
quite a bit higher in price, but it will work on just about anything you can strap in on,
air gun, PB's, shotguns, BB guns and some pistols etc,
Work very well at anytime, day or night or any weather conditions and it don't need any lights etc.
Very easy to set and use at the range or the back yard. And you don't have to worry about shooting it,
provided you follow the instructions..... ;)
Tia,
Don

There’s a complete Caldwell setup for sale on Brads site. Really good price too.

Would you mind posting "Brad's site"? I didn't see a link in this thread.

Thanks, but I have read quite a few reviews that say it can be a pain to get it to read at all. According to the reviews, the sensors must be VERY close to the line of fire.
Correct me if I am wrong. I like the idea of a muzzle mounted chrony for my AG, but it is also limited by how it is mounted. IOW, it may not be as usable for powder burners.
In any case, the more information I glean, the better informed my ultimate decision.
Thanks!

Not sure if we allow linking but apologies to the mods if we don't and please delete:

I don't know the guy and Brads can have scammers so ask questions to verify or pay the upcharge via PayPal. It would still be worth it for peace of mind. But this unit he's selling has all you need including light kit which is a big bonus.

The Caldwell unit without lighting kit is $79.99 on Amazon right now. I got mine for $75 a few months ago. it iften goes down to $70.

I had bought the $28 Chinese unit which functions well but is too much work as everything has to be done manually.
I am very happy with my Caldwell so far.
As far as shooting it, a piece of Lexan in front of appropriate thickness for caliber/energy will protect the expensive part.

Wow I stand corrected. I should have purchased the Caldwell bundle instead of the ProChrono. Kind of disappointed in the company!

From what I have read, the ProChrono is a good unit, but you will pay much more than the Caldwell if you have to buy the "extras".

I have the same.
Once you figure out the spacer combo, takes about a minute to attach, and verify with the included alignment rod.

I've been using a Caldwell for several years, & am happy.
-
I like my old ProChrono Pal for power burners.
I shot it and they repaired it for $50. That was several years ago.
I am not happy with my Caldwell Kit.
It gives inconsistent velocities.
Caldwell replaced the first one at no charge but the replacement has the same problems.
My made in China "clamp on" chronograph for $22 is excellent but it is for airguns only.
-
I use the Comp Electronics Pro Chrono. It has been fine, works with PBs, AGs, crossbow bolts & arrows. I expect the Caldwell will too.
I never shot mine, but I did build a plywood "shield" i could mount on it to protect it when trying to get down range velocity readings for the AGs (trying to calculate pellet Ballistic Coefficients).
Get one, and you will know your gun a lot better.
-
I have a piece of Lexan angled in front of the display on mine.

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

This is the one I bought and after finally figuring it out I don't more than a couple of errors. Love the fact I can down load the results into a Excel spread sheet that triggertreat made to graph vel to resv. pressure.

I had one of the tripod chicom cronos that I actually might get another one because it's so easy to used. Just turn it on and set it front of a good backstop and you can do spot vel checks. I shot mine 6 times before it finally died. DONE KILT THAT COMMY!!! lol

After getting over 20 Error1 or Error2s, I shot my chrony . . . on purpose (it still works).
For my B-Day, I got a MagnetospeedV3.
I am feeling much better now! (re: sitcom Night Court reference)

I had one of the tripod chicom cronos that I actually might get another one because it's so easy to used. Just turn it on and set it front of a good backstop and you can do spot vel checks. I shot mine 6 times before it finally died. DONE KILT THAT COMMY!!! lol
Here's the tread on it. https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=151661.0 (https://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=151661.0)
Get the clamp on model next time. No possibility of shooting it! ;) ;D
Where's the fun in that? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ?? I want to killit me some commies!!!!! I was doing a lot of shot strings and just got lazy and didn't align the barrel right.
LOL! Just keep in mind that your are PAYING a Commie for the privilege of shooting it! chuckle
Besides, the clamp on model ensures consistent barrel alignment, so consistent results.
Now I will climb back down in my hole and shut up... (grin)
