Title: What's beneath the paint on a HW50SS?

Hi, I'm looking at a used HW50SS, but I really don't like the black stock. Anyone know what kind of wood is beneath that black paint, and if is likely that I could sand off the black and refinish the stock to look like one from a regular HW50S?  ???

Should be standard beech.
