In the market for a .45 (most likely a Texan..) but really wanting to shoot without hearing protection. Mostly used for deer and hog hunting. I really like the idea of the Texan SS but loosing energy with the shorter barrel concerns me. I'm sure I could make up the energy by using HE. Is an aftermarket LCD or shroud more effective in reducing noise than the stock SS??? Has anyone compared them??? Or is there another similar option without breaking $1200ish???
-
I cant compare to the SS, but my RL shrouded Texans in .457 are shot without hearing and in fact people in the house do not know Im shooting it, even while babies were napping. Granted Im about 25-30yd from the house.

how much did it increase the OAL of the gun ?
i tried to find info online and had no luck
there website shows talons and condors from what i've seen,
maybe i'm not looking in the right place..... ???
thanks

Its approximately 56 inches.

Thanks Prouzy for the details...
I looked as well and couldn't come up with a link. The old link to the R&L Texan moderator is no longer valid. I've emailed them to find out details. But there is also the moderator from Talon Tunes https://talontunes.com/shop/texan-shroudmoderator/. The full size Texan is long enough as it is. Handling that beast in a tree stand may be a handful...

56" would be a handful indeed....
as mentioned earlier on another thread,
gun cases being plastic or fabric will be costly when/if available.

I have the R&L shroud on my Texan an yes it's a handful at 56" the hardcase I have I have to unscrew the shroud for it to fit but that just takes a few seconds so it works great.

can you shoot the texan with the shroud removed ?? if so,
does it change POI without it ?
i dont have a clue how the shroud is attached
-
I have not seen a change in POI when removing and back on, not tried it without. At the end of the frame where the barrel exits, the cap is replaced with a threaded attachment for the shroud. I like it alot, Ive had it 3 of my Texans.

I seem to have more problems getting out of the house! LOL I need to be careful taking out of the cabinet to out the door. Ive carried it in the woods, fortunately its a light rifle, just put the moderator on when I get where Im going.

I have a .45 Texan SS, my brother has a full length .45 Texan with an R&L shroud. The SS is definately quieter. But its also significantly weaker. The long Texan is a handful with the shroud. My brother is considering selling it after seeing how well the SS maneuvers. However, he also sees how the SS strains to launch .45 ammo. When he gets an SS it will either likely be a .308 or a .357. Neither of us have shot a .357 Texan yet of either barrel configuration. I would hope the .357 SS performs like my .308 SS to the extent it might be a good shooter of pellets. 81 grain .357 polymags at 1000fps would be fearsome.
-
I have seen a difference in poi when removing the shroud from mine I was at the range with a friend an took the shroud off after we had been shooting and the poi had changed just a little nothing drastic but when we put the shroud back on it was back to original point, so I think the shroud helps with barrel harmonics just like putting one of the rubber harmonic bushings on just my opinion and what happened with my rifle.

A good aftermarket unit is certainly more quiet than the stock unit. Stock unit has just mediocre baffles and no dampening material. Now I have only shot a .45 at around 270 fpe with decent reflex silencer (2", diameter, backvented, felt and stuff to modern requirements) and IMO it is only large backyard friendly. The more energy you make the larger can you need to keep it quiet. There's no miracle cure for that, people in Europe have played with airgun silencers for the past 50 years or so and there's no substitute for volume unfortunately.
As a comparison with firearms the volume of gas expelled is much smaller than what is released in airguns thus they work with smaller volume silencers.

Well, so much for the RL Shroud. I just received this email:
"I sorry to say that currently we are not making more AirForce Shrouds.
Thanks,
Matthew
RL Airgun Supply "
So it's either a Talon, Donny or SS?

You know, this really puzzles me.
A good 3D printer should be able to turn out K style baffles (which are 'the best' in many ways) cheaply and precisely. Done right so as to be too 'fragile' for PB use to comply with Federal laws but strong enough for PCPs.
The machining of the end caps is easily programmed into a CNC lathe and could be aluminium of many different alloys so cost is low there too. {I speak from having worked in both job shops and production machine shops}
What I am saying is what is needed is competitive high production and lower prices. Moderators are not rocket science and how to make good ones is well understood. What you can buy for our air guns work... But even the 'best' ones aren't that good compared to some of the effective ones available for PBers.
I was out at the range last year and an guy had both a 45 SOCOM AR and a Texan and he swapped his Sionics silencer from one to the other... The 45 Texan with the SMALLER than what we would think needed can was effectively totally silent, just because the guts worked better than what we have available. It was very educational in what could be possible for us too.

I very much doubt a 3D printed K-baffle will live in a bigbore. Just as an example I had a baffle made from 2mm thick soft aluminium plate and having it 40mm in front of the muzzle made it turn in to a funnel after few hundred shots at 200+ fpe. In addition a K baffle is not very good design, a De-lisle or traditional baffles-perforated tube-felt design has both been proven to work well in powerful big bores. I have several good silencer for PBs and airguns and while a PB silencer works in an airgun it is not nearly as effective as a purpose built AG silencer. As an example I made a test with some JAKI PB models and cans designed for airguns in a .357 airgun and there was a huge difference in favor of airgun specific models.
As for recommendations I think it was DonnyFL Sumo that I saw, big openings in a monocore unit with fine mesh around it and felt - should be pretty decent in a bigbore AG.
-
Another option is the DonnyFL Emperor (with an adapter that locks to the muzzle of the Texan Barrel. It is an unwieldy beast at about 5 feet long mounted in a Mad Dog Stock but it is pretty quite for the massive volume of air used each shot..
A lot of things are changing at AirForce since they are now selling directly from their website to the public placing them squarely in competition with their existing dealer network!
-
See, I was just throwing out one type baffle but was actually meaning that a CORRECT baffle type, whatever that is, would be better than a big open can with an absorbent lining.
Yup, the load on a flat orifice/washer would be huge... and I could see it bending it. However, the best sound controlling systems work by deflecting/diverting the gas into separate pockets of swirling circular flow and the energy is not a direct inpingment and acts with less direct force. The open center moderator may work and work reasonably well but is less efficient and a better moderator surely could be designed (using FEA computer modelling of the gas flow)
Also, I have visited the Houston Solidworks office and they were showing off to me their $100,000(+-), 3d printer which with the material they are using for high strength parts, is not going to blow out like the cheap, fragile stuff people use in the home units... so it's a case of apples and oranges.

Anybody have experience with the Talon Tunes moderator? https://talontunes.com/shop/texan-shroudmoderator/
