As most will know, the Crosman 600 is a CO2 powered pellet pistol manufactured between 1960 and 1970. Unlike its contemporaries it was equipped with a unique mechanism that used some of the gas from each shot to actuate a shuttle mechanism that took a 0.22" lead pellet from the inline magazine and placed it in line with the rifled barrel at the moment of firing.

The wooden grips on this example are aftermarket items.

The magazine follower can be cocked back into a notch allowing the 10 round magazine to be filled from the front.

In the fired position, the shuttle is in line with the barrel. Cocking the hammer puts it in line with the magazine, allowing a pellet to feed. Once the trigger is pulled, the hammer simultaneously opens the valve momentarily while putting the shuttle in line with the barrel. In this case I made the mistake of not pushing the cocking button to its forward position before firing.

The mechanism is seen here filmed at 1000 frames per second. The CO2 which escapes the valve not only propels the pellet down the barrel but also recocks the hammer which in turn returns the shuttle to the magazine feed position.

There is no seal around the shuttle, so in spite of it being a tight fit a visible amount of CO2 escapes around it. The pistol fires 14.3 grain pellets at a respectable 335 feet per second, sufficient for backyard plinking and for dealing with small pests at close range.

Viewed from above, note how the stack of pellets in the magazine temporarily moves rearwards at the moment of firing, as the domed head on the next pellet in line is forced out of the hollow skirt of the pellet about to be fired.

Well done! Never “pulled the trigger” on one of these. Fasinating mechanism
-
Very well done. The slo-mo GIFs are something I haven't seen here before. They show the mechanism working in great detail.

Nice presentation! They were, and are, quite remarkable air pistols. I have two - but need a bit of feed tuning.

Those are some great action gif's
Very informative.
Thanks for sharing your beautiful pistol!!

Very nice presentation.

Crosman was quite innovative, especially with the earlier Co2 designs. That 600 would cost a fortune to produce today.

Thanks for sharing! I enjoyed your presentation.

Thank you all!

If you made an exact reproduction, yes, however with modern materials and manufacturing techniques it would probably be affordable.
There definitely seems to be a gap in the market for a larger caliber repeater as so many similar airguns are in 0.177" caliber. The ones that do exist in 0.22" and above like say the Evanix AR6 are not strictly semi-automatic.

The Crosman 160 re-emerged as the QB78. There are many Umarex replica air pistols. Seems like a Chinese copy of the 600 would be possible.
-
Thanks for work you put into making that.
It answered alot of quedtions I had about the pistol. I recently pick one up.. Hopefully the reseal kit I bought off ebay will get it shooting
What pellets d you recommended.
Thanks again

Wadcutters only. Domes and pointed will jam for sure. Attached is some data on pellet lengths.

Personally I've only ever used Crosman Premier 0.22" domed pellets and never had a single jam.
From my slow motion studies it seems that while the heads of domed pellets do tend to enter the skirts of the previous pellet in the magazine, the interface is smooth enough for them to slip out as the shuttle cycles:

Wish I could say the same. Yours functions quite well indeed. :D
Yes, it is interesting how the pellet stack moves back when loading. More effort at this end needed.

I'm having a problem with co2 leaking out the barrel and feed arm area,as I opened the Valve a bit large and also the tp someone said to use a bigger seal on the Valve, stock valve around 0.480 - 0.484 mine 0.519 tp 0.184 could use some help as co2 is get costly

The Crosman Premeirs work just fine in both of my 600's. I used to use just the Meisters, but found out the Crosmans work just fine! dave

I also shoot the crosman premiers out of my 600. What a fun pistol to shoot. The 600 and trapmaster... 2 crosmans everbody should own.
-
I’ve got two and wads tended to jam. Always use Crosman comes in mine.
