Title: Tribute to Hy-Score Sportster including custom made pistol
Post by: 45flint on November 21, 2018, 11:00:28 AM
The Hy-Score Pistol was the only spring power pistol ever made in the US.  At the time it was very innovative and sold for 20 years.  The short barrel Sportster however was short lived only 2 years starting in 1952.  One of the few designs that offer three interchangeable barrels.  It was made also with a repeating model pictured.  I just acquired a crazy custom pistol that must have been made by a talented craftsman.  As nice as the Hy-score was it was made to be mass produced at a profit.  This guy, whoever he was tried to upgrade all the cheaper parts.  He changed out the plastic grip for a hand checkered mahogany one.  This was an amazing feat given the grip was such an integral part of the pistols support of the internal parts.  His milling was perfection.  He milled a trigger guard to replace the stamped steel one, and he replaced the cheap sight with one of milled steel.  Wish I knew more of the history of the pistol, but I was told it was part of an estate sale.

He did good.  In looking at it,  I'd say it has school project gun written all over it.  He did something to the trigger.  I see a spring  in the trigger  and laying on the guard,  which I have never seen in one.  Unles the shorties have that.

Right now my arm pit is killing me from cocking a  800,     100+ times in  a day

Mike Baker has the Barrels for those.  I tried finding parts     nope  NLA.

I had to make  a part.  There  a cool looking gun,  I have mixed feeling about these.  they have  a weak link and it's matter of time til that gives up.
I got the gun mid day monday.   Tuesday mid day I'm making that part,  I get a phone message  from a well known supplier  stating parts are sold out.  Hy-score are not worth fixing.  Hang it on the wall   >>  Be happy.  By 7 pm  I was shooting the thing   derusted, reblued.  It was worth fixing     ::)

Yes he changed the trigger spring to the one you see.  Maybe because the internal spring was difficult to pull off inside the new wood grip?

I don't own one, but wasn't the Targ-Aire a Spring powered pistol manufactured in the US around the same time as the Hy-Score?

Yes, it was short lived probably because the Hy-Score was a better and cheaper gun to produce.  Here is my UTube review of the pistol and my example.
