Shop compressor 2 gallon 100 psi cheap husky. Compressor cycled on at 75 psi and off at about 110.
Happy camper here.

What size tank? Seems people who have the shoebox compressors are happy with them and that's all that matters.

You know, I have never read about anyone being unhappy with a Shoebox or any catastrophic failures either. ;)

Fwiw, the shop compressor came on about every 6 minutes or so.

Nice size tank. Good to be able to set it to fill and just let it work away. I've also never read of any catastrophic failure of a shoebox (don't know that I've read of any failure of one at all) and as noted people who have them are certainly happy with them. Enjoy that air independence.

I honestly think that I made a good choice getting the Shoebox myself. I don't want to spend a pile of money on something that I really don't need which would be something like the Omega. I also like the fact they're made right here in the U.S.A. too. I got the California compressor myself and it's getting the job done but the one that I got only goes up to 110psi but it does put out 2.2cfm. I recently went to Harbor Freight and they now have the ultra quiet ones for sale now, they look like the same thing as the California compressors, the one they have for $189.99 puts out 2.2cfm, 135psi and I kinda kick myself in the butt for not waiting because for about $30 more it would have been worth the wait. The one from HB has a nice looking set of gauges on it too. When you go to California compressors website in the fine print you'll read about how they're not manufactured here but assembled here. I've been looking at all the ultra quiets on the net too and they all appear to be made from the same stuff. No doubt it's Chinese made but man are they quiet and they really do a good job too.

Shouldn't a steady higher pressure be more important than 2.2 CFM? Ideally the compressor should be able to supply 125 PSI steadily and the CFM wouldn't need to be more than a thimble full. That compressor would be perfect to supply the Shoebox but would be useless for anything else.
How do you think a hand pump would work to supply the Shoebox? I never used one so I'm just wondering.

I have the CA compressor in the 5 gal. steel tank version. The more pre compressed volume , the less run time on the compressor , and lets the water in the 1st stage condense out better.
PS bleeding the air off the line is way noisier than the units running.

I have the CAT 4610S and provides plenty for the SB Max. But, if I had a F10, I'd look for a quiet compressor that can put out the higher psi to get the most benefit from it, ie minimize fill times.

I assume that I can set the regulated output pressure to 125 and be good. I would assume this compressor would kick on 1/3 as much as my 2 gallon one and fill my tank more quickly.

Even with my Cal compressor being a 110psi (advertised as 125psi but it's actually 110psi max) it still topped my 88cf going from 3200psi up to 4500psi in about an hour and a half. I was very pleased because the amount of air that I do use normally I won't have to do a lot of filling of my tanks. If I was going to be using a lot of air all the time I probably would have bought an Omega but those arean't super fast either. The only step up from the Omega that I would personally get would be something like a Bauer dive compressor but those are $3K and that's totally out of my league . . . . sure would be nice though ;D

Wayne, that is exactly the info of Stat's I was looking for. ;) 8)
What are the cut off and cut on of the motor pressures? My full size IR cuts on at 9o psi, (Too Low) and off at 145 psi. No provision for changing cut off or on pressures. Many compressors do have a way to do it. GRRRR!!!

Thanks Wayne. I'm trying to figure out how to get my Ingersol Rand to stop on higher than the 90 psi it does now. It kicks off at 145 psi. I would like it to kick on at 110, and be able to keep the pressure at 110 to 125 psi. Still tinkering. LOL
Running the Altaros at 90 psi is just too low. GRRRR!

If I am not mistaken, the CA compressors do have a pressure limit switch adjustments under the pressure switch cover.

If so it could be very handy! The IR has no manual adjustment at all. :(

I wondered about that myself so I went and checked. Sure enough there's an adjustment and I turned it up to 120psi from 110psi, very cool 8)

If you don't have an adjustable pressure switch, take a look at how the contacts work - you might be able to easily force the compressor to turn on earlier manually.
I have an old 15 gallon Craftsman compressor (loud!!) that I did this on - once I saw how it looked, I simply tied a loop of twine and laid it across the compressor so that it presses on the contact switch when I pull it such that it loads up the contacts. With a simple tug, I can start the compressor to cycle to full, and it cuts off at 125PSI. I did this because it won't restart on its own until it gets down to between 85 and 90 psi.
I use this when running my Shoebox Max (pressure regulated to 95 psi on the input side) to keep the pressure in the tank up, but mostly I use it to make sure I have the shop compressor tank at maximum pressure well before I start the Shoebox. This gives the air charge a long time to cool down before the fill begins. With the 15 gallon tank, the compressor only needs to fire up every 20 minutes or so, so I often will pop out to the garage and force a start to keep the pressure high (and to have a cooler air charge in the line too).

Is the turn on pressure adjustable as well? I'd like to move that up to 95psi.
