Title: Is my hand pump defective
Post by: SoCalZac on November 14, 2018, 10:07:48 AM
I am new to pcp and high pressure hand pumps and am not sure if my pump is defective of not. I bought one of the ebay $40 pumps. It appears to be leaking oil or water or maybe both when I pump it. I can see a oil on the inner tube and it is collecting on the bottom o-ring it is quite a bit. Is it normal to see this.  It also feels like it gets kind of stuck at the very bottom of the stroke and takes a little more effort to get it to go all the way down. This is with it not attached to anything just open to the atmosphere.

I wouldn't worry about it on a new pump, it's just probably excess oil coming off the tube. I rarely even lube mine cause once they have a good film of oil it lasts quite a while

Perfect thanks I will fill my gun now. I was worried I was going to get oil or water in the gun.

If you don't have some kind of desiccant on the pump, you should worry about getting water in the gun. I have a large desiccant filter on the intake of the pump, and a small tampon type filter on the output hose.

They do recommend pumping for many cycles , without it hooked up to an air cylinder, to purge any excess oils out of the pump.
Too much oil can cause the pump valving to act sticky also.

I picked up a $30 pump off aliexpress.

It has a skinny blue anodized looking chamber that has a skinny cotton "tampon" type filter.

It works to filter out liquid but it won't last long. I can see that the bottom of the cotton filter is turning black from collecting oil.

I purchased and received this. It works, still hasn't collected any oil yet but I've only used it twice. Looks pretty solid and comes with backup cotton filters. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/PCP-Paintball-Airforce-Hand-Pump-Water-Oil-Separator-M10x1-Free-Filter-300bar-4500psi-with-Quick-Coupler/32882586708.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.2a684c4dRpxthN (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/PCP-Paintball-Airforce-Hand-Pump-Water-Oil-Separator-M10x1-Free-Filter-300bar-4500psi-with-Quick-Coupler/32882586708.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.2a684c4dRpxthN)

It takes more pumps to pressurize the tube now. More pumps = more exercise.

Thanks for that i was wondering if there was a filter on this pump. The instructions don’t say anything about it. I’ll pull apart the blue thingy and make sure there’s a filter in there.
