Title: One of Those Days
Post by: longislandhunter on July 08, 2011, 12:00:37 AM
Well, late this afternoon I decided to finish the day stalking g-hogs at the vegetable farm.  I was going to use the .22 Condor but when I opened the gun safe door I saw my beloved .22 cal R-9 Goldfinger looking at me.  Last time I shot her she was putting predators into ragged hole groups but that was quite a while ago so I decided I better take a few shots in the backyard range just to make sure the scope was still on target.

At 30 yards I shot a 10 shot string and each pellet flew true giving me a beautiful ragged hole group smaller than a dime.  Time to hunt :)

Got to the farm and spent the lasts hours of daylight stalking the numerous g-hogs that were out raiding the crops.  Long story short,, I managed to stalk within range of 4 g-hogs and cleanly missed every single one of them.  :(   I did almost manage to bag one with my truck though.  This young g-hog actually ran underneath my truck as I was driving down the dirt road bordering the crops.  My truck was between him and his burrow but the youngster timed it perfectly and managed to evade all 4 tires,, just barely.

As for my missed shots.. guess I was just having one of those days.  Rifle checked out fine back at home so I know it was me.  Oh well, I got some good exercise, got to sit and chat with the farmer for a little while and had a great time making my stalks,, but no g-hog for dinner tonight  :(

I hope the rest of you GTA hunters shot better than I did today  :)

Sounds like allot of fun Jeff, the other night my dog was making a fuss outside, and for good reason there was a porcupine in the ditch! Smart dog kept her distance and me and mister disco installed a .22 cal air conditioner right behind the eyeball of that porc! No twitchen, nothing !

Dude, I've had those days too! I blamed the gun, I blamed everything.  Sure enough when I got home it was shooting just fine. :)  That was when I took my Sheridan squirrel hunting and kept missing.  :(

Jeff, I think we all have had days like that one time or another.  The only remedy is to go back another day!  Don't let it get you down.  We'll be looking for another post tomorrow night with a success story and pics.

Now that I think about it, it must be that GUN that is defective!  I think you need to send it to me for some rigorous "extended testing". :P

I'm a firm believer that a humbling experience every once in a while is a good thing and I certainly had mine yesterday :)

If it doesn't rain this afternoon I'll head back to the farm for round 2.  Yesterday the farmer asked me if I could set up to remove 2 specific g-hogs that are wreaking havoc in his crops, both of them are big, old, fat g-hogs that have eluded him for a couple of years.  One has an insatiable appetite for the small, tender yellow squash that are just starting to grow.  The ground in this area is literally littered with 1/2 eaten baby squash. The other one (on the other side of the farm) is addicted to the tender, young broccoli plants.  So,, I told the farmer I'd put in some time targeting these 2 g-hogs and try to take them out.  These 2 are so wary though that I'm actually going to set up blinds with my camo netting and use the .22 condor for some longer range shooting.

Anyway, thanks for consoling me for my lousy shooting, I feel better now  and I'm ready to kick some g-hog butt.  :)

You were out there doing it and taking in the moment's of the hunt. It really doesn't matter at times if we miss a shot or two brother were still doing what some wish they had the time or place to hunt. I have no doubt in your skill's and know that it will all come together. Ed
