Title: Tape Scope Rings?
Post by: Elo76 on October 12, 2018, 10:27:05 AM
Just wondering what people are doing.  I know UTG rings come with tape, but I just mounted a Hawke 10-50 ED on some Sportsmatch rings on my Vortek Tuned HW97K.  I did not use friction tape and am wondering if I should have.  Havent had any slippage yet.  Have around 500 shots through it.

What's the general consensus on taping rings?

I don't tape my rings.  I do tighten them with a torque wrench, though.

I like using the 3M friction tape on rings.  It provides a little more grip and it protects scope tubes from getting all scratched up.  I move scopes around a bit till I find the perfect match between scope and rifle purpose.   I'm still learning what I like for different scenarios.  ;D

Thanks,

Taso

Almost all my rifles have Hawke Match mount rings on them which come with Hawke's own friction tape in them already. Never had a problem with any of them moving although like Taso mentioned, I've seen mention by more than a few members of using the 3M friction tape you can find at your local hardware store.

A few months ago, I started using friction tape, and it seems to have really helped, in my observation. I don't use it for all my scopes, but apply it after I've noticed a tendency in a particular scope and/or rings, to migrate.

Ok.  I'm gonna pick some tape up so I have it but I'm thinking I should leave my current setup alone unless I have problems.

This just had me curious because Sportsmatch rings  do not come with tape and others do.

Take a pencil and mark a line on the back side of the rear ring. If your scope moves, you'll see it.

Just to update the thread.  I ended up trying some utilitech friction tape from lowes a few weeks ago.  Needless to say I will be removing that today.  The gun has been in my basement which is rather cool.  Last night I noticed some adhesive seeping out.  I'd imagine that this would be noticeably worse in the summer months.

This was on a pair of Sportsmatch rings that I wasn't having any issues with but just wanted to try something.  I might try some liquid electrical tape or just leave it alone because everything was fine before I was messing with it.  Just started this discussion because Sportsmatch rings don't have tape on them like others do.

I have airguns in the Caribbean.  Down here the tape just turns to goo..... :-\
Makes a bloody mess when I take the top scope rings off.

I try and clean the scope tube with 70% alcohol.
Maybe for colder climates it works fine, if my scopes move I use clear gorilla tape to the bottom rings and tighten the top caps to required specs with a torque wrench.

Some years back, I used tape on my scope rings, what a mess. Now days I use a Wheeler scope mounting kit. By lapping the rings you get a much better fit. Never had a scope move since then. Even held up to a D460, and that gun is brutal. If I find a need to shim a scope, 35mm film works great. It doesn't compress in the heat, and is clean. Just watch how much shim you use, don't compress the tube out of round. Fat Wrench is another good investment.

If there is no slippage then friction tape won't solve anything except perhaps protect the scope tube a bit! When I was using BKL mounts on my HW break barrels I found that friction tape did help to keep the scope from slipping without "tube damaging" top strap screw torque...........
Without tape..........

Tape stopped scope slipping in the BKL mount but the scope/base still slipped on the dovetails...........

I use friction tape. Only scope that slipped was without it.
Plus the protection is one more reason to continue.
