QB -79A with a painted stock, raised cheek comb, LW .177 barrel, Valve work with Cobra & SSG, light hammer etc etc ...
Just added an adjustable knee riser / hamster and a butt plate off a RAW.
All said mostly labor & fabrication with the barrel a take off of another PCP. LDC a recycled part too .... Invested cost well UNDER $150.00 ;D
Best part is it shoots friggen accurate !! able to to make a ragged hole at 30 yards.
Topped with an AZTEC Emerald 5.5x25 & Nautilus side wheel off another FT gun taken out of service temporarily.
Shooting H&N Sniper Meds @ 790 fps it is right at 12 ft lbs and going to get used as my WFTF class club shoot gun ... heck it just might beat up on some STEYR's :o
Talk about LIPSTICK on a pig !! ... Lol

Wow, you really tricked that puppy out! Looks great.
Just curious if you happened to give the factory barrel a try? Often times they're not too shabby...
Couple of 25 yard groups:

Nice looking rig Scott. You must get a pile of shots at 12 FPE . I had an AR2079 for a while in .22 , it was super accurate . Too bad they went the way of the DoDo bird . By far the easiest HPa conversions I had done , remove co2 bottle , screw in new regulated ninja bottle . The only reason I got rid of it was someone offered me way more than I paid .
-
Looks like that RAW plate takes up the short LOP quite nicely.

I did play extensively with the 16" factory barrel & it shot good but NOT FT accurate. The LW fitted came off my daystate Airwolf that got .20 cal converted and it shoots Great !

Yes it does, was able to remove the Spacers that previously increased the LOP ... looks pretty Snazzy too ;)

Can't wait to see it in action!
I've had mine set up and set aside for a while, maybe I'll get numbers on it and we can have a battle of the QBs!
I too have a LW barrel as the factory barrel was not ft accurate like Scott was saying.
Scott's certainly has a better look to it, but maybe a Chinese gun showdown needs to happen!!!! If I'm really getting serious I'll have Jessica shoot it for me lol

Holy Snack Bar Guys
Those a good lookin shootin irons, 8)
I would like to see a WFTF class shoot etc,
but stuck out here in the Pucker Brush, little chance of that happening........ :'(
Scott
I am going to take a SWAG on those thin silver rods with fishin lures on the end = wind flags?
Cameron
That range wheel is a work of art...did you make yourself?
Guys,
Go kick those STEYRS to the curb.......
can't wait for the results
Thanks,
Don

Congrats Scott on another stellar build.
It's drop dead sexxy :)
I'd be curious to know just how you made a QB trigger into a FT ready trigger.
Nice looking purpose built rig.
Thanks
Ray

you guys are having too much fun, it makes me want to buy a qb78s and join the fray for a showdown. OP, that's a lot of work and it looks really good!

Wish I could say I made it, my buddy Lonnie Smith made it for one of his tac vector 10-40 scopes and I was lucky enough to snatch it up when he sold it,.
Scott's has probably twice the work as mine. I have a standard valve with a PEEK poppet, LW barrel from an EV2, SSG, and light hammer.
These triggers can be made to be very usable and predictable. Mine is under a pound.

As we all know Scott is quite talented, this thing is a sweet shooter. Last time I shot it I believe it was set up in a .20 Cal.

Ahh...beautiful work of art shooting exotic pellets. one of a kind. i wonder if i could fit a smooth twist barrel into one of these QB, regulated to shoot .22/50fpe and join the Extreme bench rest....something about going simple and reaching for bigger goals....

While I do not play any of the FT games, do appreciate how well an a tuned/adjusted AR 2079/2078 can shoot.
If you take on the steel-critter-game, don't think you'll be at a losss because of the rifle you shoot.
I'll dust off once again and see how well it can do with it's original barrel. It's been put away for awhile (somthing like2 or 2 1/2 months) while I worked on other "children".

One of the barrels that I had no urge to change (although other QB's did get new tubes). They do get it "right" evey so often.

One of the good things (At least to me) was the way-big pletium chamber between the regulator and the valve. Can use that to make power.or can use that to make fluxutations of the regulator a non issue. In the first, the large volume allows an easier way to more power ( as all the valve has to work with in the time of the shot is the plentium"on deck" air).In the second,as you don't use nearly all the air in the plentium, any variation in the cheap rtegulators kind of evens out.
Yes,I've actually tired it at 2X the distance (40 yards) for right at 1MOA. Likely, given my small number of tests, more like 1.2-1.3 MOA at 50 yards (something like .6 - .65").
Tried for as many shots at about 12 foot pounds as I could manage at about 12 foot pounds (more like 12.4). Found that running at 50 PSI actually helped that shot count; having a wider pressure range worked better in that goal that trying to "blip" the valve at 1200psi).
OK...strictly...it's more like 195-196 "great shots" followed by a few "almost great" shots once it goes off reg.

Noting special to get that really low varation for the first 195 shoits...other than smooting friction surafaces from the start and then almost 10 years of use to "break it in".
My other solutions were cheaper (as I seem to be a cheap kind of guy so long as it works just as well):
Too short? Butt plate is a flat Morgan adjustable, spaced up from the wood with two short tubes of black PCP tubing.
(http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t50/ribbonstone/AR2078/556c394e-ac1b-41cf-be5e-29a7fc1551a2.jpg) (http://s157.photobucket.com/user/ribbonstone/media/AR2078/556c394e-ac1b-41cf-be5e-29a7fc1551a2.jpg.html)
TRoo slick/smooth a grip? Pistol grip is hand stippled (yep...a shaped punch and a lite hammer)..then stained dark.
(http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t50/ribbonstone/AR2078/6f20cb1b-0e49-47b6-aebe-347d80ede39e.jpg) (http://s157.photobucket.com/user/ribbonstone/media/AR2078/6f20cb1b-0e49-47b6-aebe-347d80ede39e.jpg.html)
What's the output pressure? A two gauge systerm (an on/off) between the HPA tank and the rifle. Doesn't do "jack" for perfomance, but it does make tuning it a lot easier (as you can figurte out air use pretty quickly).
(http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t50/ribbonstone/AR2078/cdbe5bd5-2de0-4e7d-a2a5-2c0f0d846152.jpg) (http://s157.photobucket.com/user/ribbonstone/media/AR2078/cdbe5bd5-2de0-4e7d-a2a5-2c0f0d846152.jpg.html)
For my use, I already know how far the target is (will be steel tape measured 20, 25, or 35 yards), the cheap 3-12X that's been on there for years without complaint. Clicks actually move the POI a predictable (although not the more like 1/5MOA than 1/4th MOA) amount and I've marked the scope to the "real world" values (rather than the pre-peinted yardage values).
So...lets dust the old girl off...fill her up to 3K (she's staying stable at 1000PSAi for the last couple of months)...try it at 20/25/35 yards (alll I've got at home).
(considering I'll e shoot 40-50 shots per session each day after work (while the light lasts), one fill up should easily last me until Saturday).

Cameron,
Bring it !! .... I'll even provide some Chinese beer for a toast of who shoots Asian iron the best 8)
No Jessica can chase us and ponder W T H is happening and perhaps PRACTICE more ... or not ;D
Challenge on the table ... Any takers ?

I like the knee riser configuration. Did you channel the stock on a router table?

No, clamped a 7/8" tube via the main stock anchor stud hole into the stocks action channel, then clamped it into my mill vise running a 3/4" end mill back & forth until depth was correct.

Yup, my original solution was similar being 2 short delrin stubs using longer screws.
-
Nice build Scott, doesn't seem like much QB remains though, but same could be said for my synrod as more aftermarket parts are added.

Barrel is different, hammer is different, screws have been replaced, but realistically a lot has just been modified.
These things really have great bones for mods!

Agree, the basic structure, parts that make it work remain QB based and easily reversed to OEM parts/ spec.
Nearly all LABOR and fabrication to ADD parts and pieces to make your basic as delivered gun higher in QC ... heck mine is still cock on close, feels, exterior looks are obvious STILL a QB-78/79 gun to its bones.
-
Nor would I really want to change the basic "guts". Simple has an attraction, and the QB's are pretty simple and easy to deal with. From your picture....think you'll easily understand this: there are folks that just love a flat head V8 for the same reasons.
-
Mine is pretty much ready to go!!
Was going to buy some BKL- Weaver/ picatinny adapters but since it's a cheap build I decided to chop the new style UTG 11mm - picatinny adapter in half and shave a little off to make it fit properly.
At CASA during the raffle I won the new Leapers 30mm Cantilever w/ 50mm offset. It looks great, and it will nice and sturdy so I mounted it up and it sure looks pretty.
Gun cost:
$155 - RIFLE
$5 - Material for SSG
$5 - Material for 25 grm MDS/ brass Hammer
$2 - Material for PEEK poppet/ Valve Spring
$75 - EV2 Barrel
$175 - Tac Vector Scope
$8 - Materials for Homemade Sidewheel
$15 - UTG Weaver/ Pic adapter
----------
$440 Cost for a Ready to Go WFTF PCP.
-
Game on !!
Lets go humble those Steyr and Thomas shooters in our local WFTF ranks ... Try at least ;D

Accurate barrel...right pellet...launched at a uniform speed...why NOT?
If a barrel shoots accurately, do you really give a rat'sarse where it was made?

Not at all ... by this age your skin is thick and attitude quite tenacious. (https://www.bmwlt.com/forums/images/smilies/thumb.gif)

I do even worst than that when folks are watching...well, a certain type of "folks".
Keep an empty Gamo pellet tin. Fill it with JSB's (or whatever the best shooting pellet happens to be) at home and put it out where any "you-ha" can see it while I shoot...and draw there own conclusions.

It doesn't matter where it's made, as along as it performs.
The fun part for Scott and I will be seeing who can shoot theirs better, hopefully him and I will be able to post some scores similar to our top WFTF Shooters.
I'm looking forward to seeing how my work can compare with Scott's. He's an exceptional tuner and an equally good shot.
I've been shooting the same piston gun for almost a year, not having to cock a Springer will be a nice relief for a year end shoot.

More of a Grin and a Wink sort of guy ... be they fall or not.
-
Same philosophy/psychology.
If you think a guy unpacking a high priced rifle is automatically going to shoot better than you....you already lost.
So what does that say if you think a guy dipping out of a Gamo tin is automatically at a disadvantage?
